The American envoy to Azerbaijan says the anti-missile system being planned for deployment in Poland is aimed at meeting threats from Iran. Calling Iran a threat, the American ambassador to Azerbaijan said the anti missile system the US is planning to deploy in Europe is not aimed at Russia but at Iran.
"We have always emphasized bilateral and multilateral talks with our Russian colleagues that the American deployment of an anti-missile system in Europe is related to threats posed by Iran," ISNA quoted the American envoy to Azerbaijan as saying.
The American proposal to deploy the anti-missile system in Poland will have no effect on Europe's strategic capability, he said.
He went on to say that his country would welcome cooperation with Russia on the anti-missile system, adding that proposals had been made by America for joint talks on the possibility of cooperation in using the system.
Russia should understand that the anti-missile defense system has nothing to do with Russia but is aimed at foiling possible threats posed by Iran, the US envoy said.
