Stephen Herbits, secretary-general of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), has joined a group of gay and lesbian leaders who back the presidential candidacy of Hillary Clinton.
Herbits, along with dozens of gay and lesbian leaders, joined the "LGBT Americans for Hillary," described as "a national steering committee of over 65 leaders in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community" by Clinton's official campaign website.
Speaking to Ynetnews, Herbits denied a press report which claimed that he was heading the group. "I am not running anything, I have no responsibilities, other than the fact that I am supporting Hillary Clinton," he said.
"I am one of more than 60 people in this group of people who believe that Clinton should be elected. I like what they do, and that is the concept behind the endorsement," Herbits explained. "In American politics, joining an advisory committee means an endorsement," he said. "I also made a contribution to her (Clinton's) campaign," he added.
Addressing the timing of his expected departure from the WJC, Herbits said: "I have offered to resign. (WJC President) Mr (Ron) Lauder and I are working together for an orderly transition," but added that he didn't know "exactly when it will be."
Herbits said he believed Lauder had found a candidate to take up the position of secretary-general. "My role is to help whoever he has decided to replace me," he added.
