http://FOXNews.com Three Killed in Connecticut Home Invasion, Suspects Arrested

Monday , July 23, 2007

CHESHIRE, Conn. — Three people were killed after thieves broke into their home, held them hostage for several hours and ultimately set the house ablaze before being nabbed by police while trying to flee the scene.

Authorities surrounded the home after a woman was taken by one of the suspects to a bank and somehow alerted an employee that her family was being held hostage, The Hartford Courant reported on its Web site. Connecticut State Police said in a statement issued Monday that officers went to the residence after bank officials notified them of a "suspicious withdrawal."

A man inside the house was able to escape with severe injuries and provide authorities with some information, state police said in the statement. The man is currently hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

Two suspects tried to escape after apparently setting the home on fire, but were quickly arrested at gunpoint when the car they were driving crashed into two police cruisers, according to state authorities.

The Cheshire Fire Department responded to the scene, extinguished the fire and discovered three bodies inside the house, state police said.

Neighbors said the home belonged to the Petit family — William Petit Jr. and his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and their two daughters.

Petit, 50, is the medical director of the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at The Hospital of Central Connecticut, and his wife of 22 years worked at the Cheshire Academy, a boarding school.

Staff at Cheshire Academy were trying to confirm the news Monday afternoon, said spokeswoman Colleen Reilly.

"Everyone here is devastated. So we are still in shock," Reilly said.

"It's just a very difficult day here. We are just finding about it now," said Philip Moore, director of communications for the school.

Hawke-Petit, 48, worked at the boarding and day school as co-director of its health center, taking care of students and faculty there, Moore said.

"She was very good at educating kids about good health, not just taking care of them when they are not feeling well," Moore said.

Police said there was one male survivor, and two of those who died were female. Additional information on the third victim was not available, and it wasn't known whether arson was the cause of death or whether the victims were killed before the fire was set.

The Rev. Ronald A. Rising, a neighbor, said he has known the family for more than 10 years.

"They're just a lovely family," he said. "It's just awful to think it would happen to a family like that in this community. You don't think about those things happening."

The upper-middle class neighborhood includes colonial homes with well-kept lawns.

Cheshire, a suburb with a population of more than 29,000, is just east of Waterbury and about 15 miles north of New Haven.

My GOD ....I spent every other summer of my life in Cheshire up to adult....and visit there frequently now with my wonderful cousins !!

Peaceful, pristine, caring, generous.... a wonderful small town complete with the village green.

Cheshire Academy...all my cousins have had some connection there... the whole area is genuine Main Street America as it should be. Sleeping Giant Park, Blackies , Summer Camps in the nearby hills where kids learn the best of American culture, group events, archery, horseback riding, swimming at ALL levels, ball room dancing, swing, tango....even today.

New Haven is the city that is giving illegals ids. New Haven has always been a semi slum. No such thing as being safe just because you are a few miles out in the sticks. Many of the day workers come back later and do crimes. They know where all the places worth robing are.

I know - but it is a shock to people sometimes at first.

Bad guys have cars, and they know no one in their neighborhood has anything worth stealing.

I have a nice piece of property in a new area , homes $800,000 to $2.5 million.

I had a dozen trees brought in, large ones, and put them in a spot on the acres where they were not readily seen; area is 70% wooded with huge mature hardwoods anyway....I was going to get a head start with some plantings...all was well...

Illegal aliens were used by the feckless multi-million dollar paving corporation that does interstates.... one day they were in front of my property.

Saturday night it rained lightly....one set of narrow -wjeeled pickup truck tracks in....no looking around...one set out...clearly marked on the pavement....all all the trees were gone. Quite a load but manageable.

These illegal alien vermin are like rats sniffing to see what they can get...burglary, theft, rape, murder...anything.

And there is no excuse for it since I daresay they all have more disposable cash, and NO EXPENSES but for personal ;luxury, than 99% here.

Deport ALL the bastards...don't tell me we CAN'T .

Is it possible that the same crew that delivered your trees, removed them?

They'd know exactly where to drive to harvest them...

Deport them all bump.

That happened with the guys who delivered wall to wall carpet on one of my jobs, but my fellow electricians were the ones who stole the copper and aluminum cable deliveries that weren't secured overnight.

It really irritated me when two of my guys stole 2 grand of copper and sold it for scrap for 80 bux.

No, because the owner of the nursery and I loaded and delivered them ourselves...known each other for 20 years , kids etc...they were larger trees becoming too big for the usual popular sale...they were average 12 feet tall, but blocky because they were older stock. We used a flatbed to haul them and a tree sling/ winch attached although two men could do it...
