German Bakery Owners Close Florida Business, Face Possible Deportation Wednesday, July 25, 2007 The owners of a bakery in Florida have shuttered their business and face deportation after nearly a decade of serving German pastries. Detlef and Marina Raddant, owners of the German Baker Boy Bakery in St. Pete Beach, Fla., have emptied their shelves and turned off their ovens after a special E-2 business visa that allowed them to permanently move to the United States was cancelled, http://MyFoxTampa.com reported Tuesday. The visa automatically expired 10 years after the couple moved to the U.S. from their native Berlin. Attempts to renew the visas in Germany in the beginning of the month were unsuccessful because the U.S. vice-consul in Frankfurt informed them their visas would instead be cancelled. The U.S. vice-consul cited that the couple had not hired enough American employees for their business as the reasoning behind the cancellation, a requirement for this type of visa. "I was fainting," Marina told http://MyFOXTampa.com, describing the moment she heard the bad news. "So they had to call the paramedics and the doctor into the embassy. We have friends here, we have our house here, our whole life is here, so I call the place home." Now, because the couple is in the United States with tourists visas, they are no longer allowed to operate their business. Republican legislator C.W. Bill Young told http://MyFOXTampa.com that he had called the United States ambassador in Germany Tuesday morning and explained the details of the case. He has also contacted the American legal counsel in Germany.

In 2000 I was at UVic and spent some intermittent weeks with a Canadian couple who were high-tech industrialists with an employee pool over 600 people. They had painfully petitioned ICE/US Gov for a permanent resident status so they could place an arm of their business in the United States. They were consistently denied anything but a tourist visa. The wife told me Immigration finally told them they were not wanted because the policy was for Mestizos to enter, millions of them, as fast as they could so there would be a Union of Mexico and the United States. This was in 2000. In San Diego in 2002 I unbelieving heard this same mantra all over the place. I remembered a fellowship in San Francisco ending in 1989 and the changes in law and order that had taken place in San Francisco in just a few years as the Mexicans invaded. San Francisco changed dramatically in just a very few years so Castro and SOMA is now a very dangerous place anytime after 5. I saw buses ripped up in transit by Mexican robbers in broad daylight; an event unheard of previously in San Francisco. The former Californians then began the flight north to Oregon and Washington but the swarms just increased.

True, it's not the poor people who are so rural and ill-prepared, they get hit trying to cross the freeways (there have been signs in San Diego for years, warning drivers). I remember another case several years ago. A Polish family, with teenagers who did speak Polish, they had lived their lives here, were sent back to Poland. Nothing anyone did helped. Yet foreign visa workers and foreign students end up staying here in very high #s.
