Don't be too quick to judge Vick

Editor's Note

Deion Sanders column from Sunday's editions of The News-Press has touched a nerve in the Southwest Florida community and around the country. This morning the column was read word-for-word on ESPN Radio.

Here's his column

I would've never thought Mike Vick, one of the NFL's most exciting players — the man who makes the network execs smile every time he plays — would ever be indicted for crimes against man's best friend.

The potential impact could be devastating.

He could lose millions worth of endorsements. Nike has already suspended the release of his new shoe. He could lose millions he was supposed to get from the Atlanta Falcons, if the club decides to cut him. That's unlikely, but it could happen if he's convicted or makes a plea arrangement.

Or his reputation might wind up so stained that he's never forgiven in the court of public opinion. That would be too bad for the 27-year-old superstar.

This is all the result of perspective.

What a dog means to Vick might be a lot different than what he means to you or I. Hold on, don't start shaking your head just yet. Listen to me.

Some people kiss their dogs on the mouth. Some people let their dogs eat from their plate. Some people dress their dogs in suits more expensive than mine, if you can believe that.

And some people enjoy proving they have the biggest, toughest dog on the street. You're probably not going to believe this, but I bet Vick loves the dogs that were the biggest and the baddest. Maybe, he identified with them in some way.

You can still choose to condemn him, but I'm trying to take you inside his mind so you can understand where he might be coming from.

I'm sure all of the animal activists and Humane Society folks have a dart board with Vick's picture in the center of it. And if he plays this season, PETA is going to picket every stadium where he plays.

Still, I must ask the question: Where is all of this going?

By now you've read all of the accusations about the cruelty involving the dogs — and I'm not just talking about their duels to the death. All of that is enough to make me cringe because I have three highly-trained protection German shepherds, just in case someone wants to rob my family.

Believe me, you don't want to deal with them. With one German command, our dog Yascho turns into Cujo. And for the record, I live around the corner from the police station, so it won't take them long to show up and save you from the dogs.

Now back to Vick.

Why are we indicting him? Was he the ringleader? Is he the big fish? Or is there someone else? The fights allegedly occurred at a property that he purchased for a family member. They apparently found carcasses on the property, but I must ask you again, is he the ringleader?

This situation reminds me of a scene in the movie "New Jack City," when drug dealer Nino Brown is on the witness stand and eloquently says, "This thing is bigger than me."

Are we using Vick to get to the ringleader? Are we using him to bring an end to dogfighting in the United States?

The only thing I can gather from this situation is that we're using Vick.

Was he wrong? Absolutely. Was he stupid? Can't argue with that. Was he immature? No doubt. But is he the ringleader? I just can't see it.

I believe Vick had a passion for dogfighting. I know many athletes who share his passion. The allure is the intensity and the challenge of a dog fighting to the death. It's like ultimate fighting, but the dog doesn't tap out when he knows he can't win.

It reminds me of when I wore a lot of jewelry back in the day because I always wanted to have the biggest chain or the biggest, baddest car. It gives you status.

Can I pause for a moment to ask you a question?

Who shot Darrant Williams? Remember the Denver Bronco cornerback? I'm just more concerned about bringing to justice someone who killed a human. Or finding out who broke into Miami Heat forward Antoine Walker's home, tied him up and robbed him at gunpoint.

We're attacking this dogfighting ring the same way a teenager attacks his MySpace page after school (by the way parents, make sure you monitor your kids). We should have the same passion for man that we have for man's best friend.

The reason this is turning into a three-ring circus is that baseball is boring, basketball is months away, football is around the corner and we in the media don't have a thing interesting to write about.

How will this end up? I have no idea. All I know is Falcons fans better pray because Vick's backup is Joey Harrington. Enough said.

God bless and God willing I'll hollah at you next week.

Hey stupid...Inside that mans mind is the last place any sane person would want to be.

What a country. It's amazing (and sad) that playing cornerback in the NFL grants you enough clout to write "opinion" pieces for a newspaper. If he's not writing about man to man coverage or what it takes to play corner, I have no interest in what he's saying. He's a self-absorbed Vick apologist, who should thank his lucky stars he was born with amazing athletic ability. He doesn't seem to have much else to work with.

i recently spoke with someone who apparently was very involved in breaking this...i asked this person not to fill me in with any details [this thread is the most i've seen or heard, and i didn't read but half of it], because i was nursing a near-death pocket pet at the time, and i couldn't take any more....my daughter heard the whole story, and was VERY DISTURBED and angry afterwards...i can't repeat what she thought they should do to him....he was my other daughter's favorite player...no more.

Falcons' Vick Pleads Not Guilty

The Atlanta Falcons quarterback was to appear at a bond hearing and enter a plea on dogfighting conspiracy charges. He said nothing as he walked into the courthouse, which was lined by spectators who began gathering at dawn.

Vick arrived at 3 p.m. in a black sport utility vehicle and was booed by a crowd of hundreds.

Wearing a dark suit and blue shirt, Vick looked straight ahead as he walked up the ramp to the courthouse.

Vick is accused with three others of conspiracy involving competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting, and conducting the enterprise across state lines. Federal prosecutors allege the operation known as Bad Newz Kennels operated on Vick's property in Surry County.

Blacks stole the eternal victimhood from the Jews.

Now anytime they are in a tight spot with no way out,..."You are anti-black"..that is a guaranteed ticket home.

Vick has over a million dollars a month income, thus money was not the allure.

Just perhaps the blood, the savagery, was the intoxicant.

Barbarism at its extreme. The gall of Sanders is disgusting.

I'll hollah at you next week.

They were hollahr'n outside the court today. Licence to breed. On his property. I'm sorry to family and the team. Yeah right.

Billy Martin the attorney on the job now, is doing some fine lawyering saying Vick is only one of tens of thousands of 'DOG-MEN'.

I had wished he said 'dog meat'.

As for action by the NFL.... I am SICK of the 'animals' in sports. While boycotts are generally considered ineffective, I would encourage all decent human beings, to boycott these sick institutions until they clean out the GARBAGE. No more. No SuperBowl, no Toilet Bowl, no water bowl, no money bowl...

There is no hole deep enough for these vermin. ANYONE defending this crap, is an evil POS, and there will be NO, NONE ZERO EXCUSE FOR any National 'SPORT OF FILTH' team to bother with 'playing the game'.

The Portland Trailblazers which earned the nickname Portland Jail Blazers is still recovering from their former "Talent First, Ethics Second" management style.

They went from ten consecutive years of Sold Out games to not being able to fill half of their new bigger Arena. While they are again starting to sell-out games their former sell-out is still remembered by many - I do not patronize them nor do I tout them.

Professional Sports has become nothing more than another business enterprise. Where once teams actually represented the community that hosted them they are now run by souless "Bean Counters" who care little about the sport of the enterprise and merely whether it is bringing double digit profits. I would just as soon go cheer for the "Walmart Warriors" as virtually any Professional Sports Business. It is a business not a sport and the NBA proves it every year by not holding "Stuporstars" to the same standards as other players and allowing them to commit multiple fouls without getting "called". It is only marginally more a real competition than "Professional Wrestling".

I hate the Snailblazers. I don't much care for Portland either and didn't think much of someone's sport judgement if they wore a TrailBlazer logoed clothing.

It is interesting though to see former University of Oregon Duck star Joey Harrington get another chance as a starter. He has usually been the victim of bad circumstances being on clunkers of teams that made his bad record as a starting quarterback an inevitability.

I hope he does his usual classy take command of the Falcons and does a great job. He has intelligence, character, and plays piano extremely well.

Ping-pong. Bring back ping-pong.

That is a sport I did play at the collegiate level. There was a short lived Collegiate League here back in the 70's. I wasn't great but was the 5th Starter of 5 (we finished second to Oregon State in the Northwest Intercollegiate Championship Tournament the year I played - still have the Plaque somewhere). The problem of course for Table Tennis is that the ball is small (does not show up well on TV) and it is an extremely fast sport. You have to see it up close to appreciate that, but it takes lightning reflexes to do well at the sport. However, it is not telegenic and in the age of Tee Bee you need your sport televised for it to be considered a major sport (despite the fact that outside of the U.S. it ranks no worse than the 3rd most popular sport).

Boise State? I know they have specialized in locating talented youngsters who were not developed enough for the big Schools - and as they proved last year it was a winning strategy. It would be sad to see them tarnished.

At this point I am turned off on most professional sports and don't bother to watch them at all. Although I still like the World Series and the Stupor Bowl.

It was a killer game. They came in a two touchdown underdog and dominated most of the game. The Statue of Liberty Play was so well executed that the runner could have walked into the End Zone.

It's on video, and there is a book out now. Movie to be made, I believe tentatively titled, "Out of the Blue".

I can't remember watching anything more thrilling since 'Rudy'.

Wonder if curling will ever get to that point?

nice rant.

while we are focused on the subject of animal cruelty...

i think we should take on the everyday animal slaughterers as well....hundreds of thousands die every day...

stories about babies and kittens in microwaves...i can't read them, and hopefully, they are very rare...i forced myself to read this because it is widespread...but i had to stop and jump around the page...i read enough to know i want to see it stopped....

not for the tender-hearted....

The agony of dying - ritual slaughter

http://www.visualstatistics.net/East-West/Ritual%20Sacrifice/Slaughter.htm

...But can they suffer? The controversy about animal suffering has a long history. In his Summa Theologica (1267-1273) Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) maintains that the killing of animals is in congruence with Biblical precepts and concludes that

33;God does not ask humans what they do with their oxen and other animals.33; ....

ahem....

Pro 12:10 — A righteous [man] regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked [are] cruel.

I read the other day, on a targeted and destroyed website, that due to the Kosher Tax and all that, that actually, 90% of the animal slaughters in this country are like this...i didn't read the whole article before it was whisked away...and i have no way of knowing if it's true, but i have seen packaged meat not just stating, but BRAGGINNG that it is Kosher with all that entails, and i think people should stop and think and perhaps start asking questions before they partake in this.

i haven't eaten red meat in about 25 years, and may just switch totally to fish until this is resolved.

Excellent post and links.

I completely agree with you.

I'm not sure of the fish anymore either. The sewage water they are forced to live in and antibiotics, etc. Eh.

I can not watch any Animal Police shows. I can barely even force myself to click on any link relative to animal abuse or neglect. In this case, with Vick, this HAD to be known on a wide scale. He was breeding the dogs.

I have worked with animal rescue organizations in the past, and have seen and heard all I need for this lifetime. These despicable acts upon our pets and torture of anykind for some sick ritual, does not fall into any other category than evil.

(That includes human beings as well.) It does matter, and final judgement will determine the price.

I will pass the the links on.

the person i spoke to regarding the Vick story [i didn't know it was Vick at the time, as i asked not to hear any details, and the story had not broken yet] is an animal rescuer as well...this person said it was hard to believe the things people do to animals where she lives, a perfectly beautiful, peaceful place...i can't listen to these stories anymore, so i don't know the details...again, my daughter heard some of them, and she was so shocked....i think animal cruelty is satanic....i am so thankful there are other people out there fighting this.

I will pass the the links on.

thank you...i appreciate it.

That may become one of my favorite verses of Scripture...thanks!

That is wonderful.

I'm sorry I hadn't noticed it earlier.

Gods work.

Thanks !

Same here.

We've known a couple that have been rescuing dogs now for almost 20 years. Emotionally, I don't know how they do it. Incredible strength.
