That was when "al Qaeda" was all but defeated and Bush was claiming 75 percent of "known" leaders captured and killed.
Now AQ is back- and stronger than ever in Iraq - heck- is leading the insurgency there- and that is why "we" need to stay there. Uh huh.
"al Qaeda"! The organization that is whatever DC needs it to be at any given moment - weak, strong, weak, strong, almost defeated, re-formed, scattered, highly organized, broken up, mobile, immobile . . . whatever policy of murder, theft, and power consolidation DC needs to justify here at home or abroad the formless gob of nothing that is AQ is there- to be shaped into whatever is required at the moment- and always there as well- is our media to parrot the latest line on "AQ" by DC without blinking.

Indeed AQ is anything they want it to be, soon it may include whatever they define as "domestic terrorists" like animal rights groups.
All along there has been a lack of known leaders of AQ, only 2 or 3 and the existence or identity of some or all of them is doubtful.
Normally when there is a real terrorist group the press talks in some detail about the leaders and members, you see them giving speeches on a regular basis, lots of photos (not like Zarqawi who only had that one photo, I believe that guy was a creation of the intelligence services), you just get a lot more real information, not like with these few, sketchy shadow characters that supposedly make up this fakery called Al Qeada.
