Barry Manilow's new buddy

We noted in an item Tuesday that the latest campaign contribution filings at the Federal Election Commission showed Republican Ron Paul getting a check from crooner Barry Manilow. We're relieved to discover we weren't the only ones struck by that; consider this exchange Tuesday night between MSNBC's Tucker Carlson and the presidential candidate himself.

Carlson: "We saw these FEC reports, including those from your campaign, and were amazed to learn that Barry Manilow has given to your campaign. ... It looks like we have. Do you know Barry Manilow?"

Paul: "No, I do not. I was very pleased to find that out."

Asked if he was a fan of Manilow's music, Paul responded, "I really like it now, I will tell you that."

We checked, by the way, and if Paul would like to connect personally with his high-profile benefactor (Manilow gave the max allowed: $2,300), the entertainer will be performing most of the rest of July at the Las Vegas Hilton (his regular gig since early 2005).

What could be more serendipitous for Paul than having Mr. "I Write the Songs" anchored in Vegas? Paul could combine a stop at the Hilton with a little politicking in Nevada, now the site of an early caucus. Still, the GOP congressman from Texas needs to know he's not alone in Manilow's affections.

The Times' Dan Morain dug into the FEC records and found that the singer, who lists his home as Woodland Hills, Calif., in February gave $2,300 checks to Democratic presidential contenders Barack Obama, John Edwards, and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Then, in April, he kicked in another $2,300 to another Democrat, Joe Biden. His donation to Paul was the most recent, sent in late June.

Paul and Manilow, should they break bread someday, could chat about their affinity for third parties. In 1988, Paul ran as the Libertarian Party's presidential candidate. In 2000, Manilow gave $1,000 to the Natural Law Party of America. That group, which despite Manilow's help disbanded its national office a few years ago, preached transcendential meditation as a means of lowering social stress --- and thus curing the nation's ills.

This ANDREW MALCOM guy sounds like a real jerk; here are some of the disparaging remarks he makes about Paul in the same LATIMES column as above:

A pair of nobodies running for president

Just a quick note: You will not want to miss Tomas Alex Tizon's profile of Ron Paul and Mike Gravel, the two presidential candidates--one a Republican, the other a Democrat--lodged at the bottom of the political polls and still making trouble for all the other mainstream candidates seeking to win the White House.

The Column One story is available now by clicking here and will appear on Page One of Wednesday's print editions.

Two old men in rubber shoes waging a political war to lead the free world with little money and just a band of fanatical fans. One has chronic back pain, the other a bad knee. Cantankerous. Ignored. And nothing so far has stopped either from their lonely, little-noticed journeys back and forth across the country.

Ron Paul, in the spotlight Call us hopelessly conventional, but we still can't quite see Republican Ron Paul's presidential candidacy ending with the oath of office at the Capitol. But we are more than willing to posit this: the campaign that the Texas congressman launched with oh-so-little-attention months ago has unquestionably exceeded expectations.

Need proof? Well, as the Washington Times recently reported, his staff has outgrown the 348-square-foot office in Arlington, Va., that once was deemed sufficient. We checked with his campaign, and it will be moving to nearby quarters that provide a spacious 3,000 square feet of work space.

He's already outlasted a former governor of Virginia and onetime chairman of the national GOP (Jim Gilmore, who ended his campaign earlier this month). And during the year's second quarter, he outraised, among others, a senator from Kansas (Sam Brownback), the former governor of Arkansas (Mike Huckabee) and the former governor of Wisconsin who also served as a cabinet member (Tommy Thompson).

But here may be the crowning achievement: on Sunday, he's profiled in the New York Times Magazine.

The National Journal's daily on-line political briefing, the Hotline, provided a preview Thursday, a combination of direct quotes and paraphrases from the piece.

For instance: Based on his "simple plan" for the Iraq war --- "just leave" --- the article says Paul has become "a sensation" in magazines "he doesn't read," on Web sites "he has never visited" and on TV shows "he has never watched."

Here's more, via the Hotline: There's "something homespun" about Paul. He communicates with constituents "through birthday cards, August barbecues and the cookbooks his wife puts together" every election year. But there's "also something cosmopolitan and radical" about him. His speeches "can bring to mind the World Social Forum" or the French international-affairs periodical Le Monde Diplomatique.

The profile also probes his links to the John Birch Society. Again, from the Hotline preview: Paul says in "mock horror": "Oh, my goodness, the John Birch Society! Is that bad? I have a lot of friends in the John Birch Society. They're generally well educated, and they understand the Constitution."

All in all, sounds like a must-read.

ANDREW MALCOM guy sounds like a real jerk;

Agreed.

He's hardly a contestant for the 'Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader' show.

Reading is a requirement, or at least should be, to work at the LA Times.

But we know........... it's a social agency to help the ignert to pay their rent.

"No one can read our Constitution without concluding that the people who wrote it wanted their government severely limited; the words 'no' and 'not' employed in restraint of government power occur 24 times in the first seven articles of the Constitution and 22 more times in the Bill of Rights." -- Rev. Edmund A. Opitz (1914-2006) American minister, author

By the way folks, Barry is playing Las Vegas through the summer.

My fave Manillow song is COULD IT BE MAGIC. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it online. But,...

Youtube video: singer Leona visits with Barry Manillow; he tells her, "I have nothing else to say, other than, Thank you for making my song sound so beautiful". Great version.

Man I hate to be such a damned cynic but I've been a pro musician [trombone, keyboards, guitars, vocal] and published BMI songwriter since I was 17...and I have to tell ya'...I've heard a zillion amateurs...14 year olds even... that could blow this product of slick TV marketing right out of the water. Her voice is average and her intonation lacks control. Sorry. That's the way I see it. She's nothing but slick outfits, makeup and lights.

And yes, a big hand to a great musician Manilow for giving to RP. Why he gave to the other DSkunks I'll never know. LOL.
