WASHINGTON — Since when is Hillary Clinton the idol of conservative pundits?

After Clinton delivered a foreign-policy haymaker to Barack Obama's head during a Democratic presidential debate Tuesday:

• Fred Barnes of The Weekly Standard, a neoconservative weekly, wrote that she answered the now-famous "would-you-meet-with-despots" question "firmly and coolly."

• Rich Lowry of National Review, a conservative weekly, gushed: "She excels. ... Clinton has run a nearly flawless campaign and has done more than any other Democrat to show she's ready to be president."

• David Brooks, conservative columnist at The New York Times, wrote that Clinton "seems to offer the perfect combination of experience and change" and is changing perceptions in a way that may persuade voters to give her a second look.

• Charles Krauthammer, conservative columnist at The Washington Post, summed up the Clinton-Obama smackdown: "The grizzled veteran showed up the clueless rookie."

All this from a crowd that has spent the better part of two decades demonizing Clinton and her husband, former President Clinton.

Is the conservative chattering class just hedging its bets, wary that Clinton might win the White House and banish them all?

Or is it a set-up: the vast right-wing conspiracy pumping up the polarizing candidate it really wants to face in the general election?

Naturally, no one in politics wants to talk about that with their names attached, lest they alienate people whose favor they need. But here's what some political strategists said when given anonymity:

"Absolutely," said one Democrat, citing Clinton's high unfavorable ratings (42 percent in a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, twice Obama's 21 percent). "Look at Fox News. They play her up all the time. Imagewise, they think she's the one Democrat they can beat right now."

"A plausible theory," said a Republican strategist with a top-tier GOP candidate. "Hillary Clinton is our best shot to win the White House. That's pretty much consensus by Republican insiders. It's a really [bad] environment for us right now. What she does, and what Obama doesn't do yet, is single-handedly solve our base problems. Because of who she is."

To Neocons like Barnes, Krauthammer, and Brooks and faux conservative baby hacks like Lowry- there is nothing about a Hillary Presidency that would upset them. She parrots all the warmonger talking points while taking care to just bash Bush for the running of the wars and is more hawkish against Iran. Her social liberalism is of no interest or concern to these sorts whatsoever. Their "conservatism" is all about shilling for the MIC and militarism. All those big MIC firms- like all of corporate America- are far more "progressive" on social issue as reflected in their Fed oversight offices (which are called "human resource departments") than the useful idiots that comprise the base of the GOP.

The "conservative" vision of the perfect society for the Neocons is the movie Starship Troopers- a fascist militarized state that is yet "progressive" on social issues (queers and women in the military are just fine) in which only those who have "Served" in the military can vote- and a society at perpetual war with alien "Bugs" - who are absolutley evil and with whom no communication or compromise is possible- only extermination.

A cold military loving warmonger yet "progressive" liberal like Hillary would actually suit the Neocons just fine- as long as she kept killing Moslems (bugs).

Yes- they have said many mean things about her in the past- but that was all just utilitarian blather that they had to say to keep their dope base active and energized. And they still yet might sling arrows her way. But if elected they will fall into line. And you will see a curious thing among the enforcers of the reichwinger party line- they will carve out a few issues on which it is permissable to criticize Der Fuheress among the base of GOPER BOTS like those that post at FR- but on all war issues and foreign policy issues- the Reichwinger gate keepers will demand support and obedience for Leader Hillary.

Absent vote rigging, though, it may be impossible to sell her to the NASCAR crowd.

She has received media treatment which is the domestic equivalent of what happened to Saddam Hussein in the foreign policy sphere. He was demonized for so long that he literally was no longer thought to be human. She is viewed the same way in much of the South. Nowhere is she viewed favorably. She goes into this with half the public prepared to vote AGAINST her, no matter who it is running.

But maybe she can win without the South. She'll have to figure out a way. Kerry almost did. Ohio was rigged or he'd have snuck into office with fewer popular votes the same way the Chimp did in 2000.

You surprise me Sam. Saddam went from progressive strong handed secular good guy leader fighting the evil Iranians one day- to demon butcher eviliest of tyrannts ever ever- in about two months in 90'. Americans bought it.

1989 Afghanistan? Mujahadeen "Freedom fighters". 2007 Afghanistan? Baby Killing terrorist Taliban. Americans buy it.

Ceaucescu- Good Guy Maverick Communist who stood up to the Soviet Union- to insane murdering Stalinist totalitarian in about a week. Americans bought it.

Noriega- friendly American stooge dictator- to "Drug dealing" butcher degenerate in a week. Americans bought it.

Here at home- Bush Jr.- went from a half witted son of Beltway royalty and not really a conservative at all- but the tool of corporate interests among the GOP base- to the near worshipped "Decider" in a year among them.

Hillary- is now a "New Yorker". New Yorkers bought that.

Milosevic went from grey dull communist party apparatchik of a third tier backwards Balkan rump state to one of several re-incarnations of Hitler we have been sold in the past 30 years. Americans bought it.

Yes- it will be hard sell among the hard core reichwingers- but even they will come around to grudging tolerance. The MSM can repackage anything and anyone and most Americans will accept it. And why not? Hillary isn't in their backyard. They give 10 seconds a week thinking about her- maybe. That ten second opinion is formed by 5 second media crafted focus group tested sound bites.

Hillary could literally be made into a Goldwater conservative in three months if that what was required.

It's obvious, these "conservatives" have been given the word that Hillary is the selection.
