Gov Mitt Romney won the 2007 Ames straw poll, receiving 4516 votes, or 31%.

In a surprise, Gov. Mike Huckabee finished second with 2587 votes at 18.1%

11. John Cox with 41 votes.

10. John McCain with 101 votes.

9. Duncan Hunter with 174 votes.

8. Rudy Giuliani with 183 votes.

7. Fred Thomson with 231 votes.

6. Tommy Thompson, 1,009 votes, 7.3%

5. Ron Paul with 1305 votes, and 9.1%

4. Tom Tancredo with 1961 votes, 13.7%.

3. Sen. Sam Brownback with 2192 votes and 15.3%

Iowa state auditor David Vaudt unofficially certified the results.

14,203 ballots were cast.

It is no mistake that Iowa is the first contest in the country that sets up the front runners for the following primaries. It is the most subject to easy manipulation by elites.

Does anyone know a real live Romney supporter? I don't. And my aquaintences are more apt to be GOP members and or self described "conservatives" and I also live in Massachusetts! He is a creature of the Beltway 100 percent.

I remember when Howard Dean was running at 30 percent in a field of 8 other Dems- with no one even near him- a month before Iowa back in 2003. John Kerry- literally 30 days before had 2 percent support in Iowa polls. Then- an infusion of money from Beltway powerhouse Ted Kennedy and plane loads of "volunteers" on the Kennedy payroll fanned out all over Iowa to arm twist and cajole local party leaders and more than likely pass out the bags of money. At the same time an MSM campaign against Dean started up- with daily stories in the New York Times rehashed on the Networks and picked up in local papers that were going back ten years or more to talk about Vermont "scandals" long since dead involving Dean. And lo and hold- John Kerry came out the winner in Iowa- a guy whose name was barely known only 30 days earlier in that state and who had ZERO grass roots support. It was a setup.

And one I predicted on Free Republic when all the dopes there thought Dean was going to win. I knew DC would never let a wild card like Dean get near the nomination. Now- Dean has long since been neutered and marginalized by being made party chair (which is a sop position as the parties structures have little real power any longer.)
