"It seems that 'we have never gone to war for conquest, for exploitation, nor for territory'; we have the word of a president [McKinley] for that. Observe, now, how Providence overrules the intentions of the truly good for their advantage. We went to war with Mexico for peace, humanity and honor, yet emerged from the contest with an extension of territory beyond the dreams of political avarice. We went to war with Spain for relief of an oppressed people [the Cubans], and at the close found ourselves in possession of vast and rich insular dependencies [primarily the Philippines] and with a pretty tight grasp upon the country for relief of whose oppressed people we took up arms. We could hardly have profited more had 'territorial aggrandizement' been the spirit of our purpose and heart of our hope. The slightest acquaintance with history shows that powerful republics are the most warlike and unscrupulous of nations." : Ambrose Bierce

The slightest acquaintance with history shows that powerful republics are the most warlike and unscrupulous of nations.

I don't know about that. But the problem with republics is that they usually devolve quite quickly into varying degrees of oligarchy with a veneer of republican institutions masking their rule. The final hundred years of the Roman Republic before its formal collapse into rapacious empire under Octavian it wasn't truly a republic.

And under Oligarchy masked behind republican forms of government- wars are always sold with the most obscene cyncial lies.

Even when the independent American states were barely a generation removed from their secession from the British Empire- the limited powers granted to their nominal capital in DC were already being abused in the one main area of its responsibility- making war- as the unjustified war of aggression for narrow interests against Mexico shows. And the rest of the history of that city on the Potomac is nearly an unbroken line of power accumulation. Indeed- the history of DC can best be described as a war between itself and the constitution that founded it.

DC is pretty much free in all but form from any constraints on its power that the constitution once inhibited or restricted.

Well said, but very few ever understand that. And altogether too many people have the opinion that their country, right or wrong, is the only way to go. It is this lack of morals in the choices made by the people of the nation that permits the aggression. Those are usually the first volunteers to want to get into the 'fight.'

When a man who is honestly mistaken hears the truth, he will either quit being mistaken or cease to be honest.
