Can't remember who said this, or the exact quote, but this will do:

"The mark of a first-class mind is the ability to understand an opposing view without necessarily agreeing with it."

Second-class minds -- and third-class, too -- can only ridicule because of their inability to comprehend.

I can agree with this part of the quote.

If one reads and does not comprehend what he read, self thinking will never follow.

"The mark of a first-class mind is the ability to understand an opposing view without necessarily agreeing with it."

I would take it one step further and include the open-mindedness to actually consider the other view, and be willing to re-evaluate your own opinion in terms of it. this is not to say change your opinion, although that should always be a possibility. the flip side is it strengthens your opinions and beliefs if you're willing to put them to the test.

Second-class minds

don't search for Truth. Nothing else matters. I have no interest in opinions; they are a dime a dozen. I do not care what people believe; that is opposed to knowledge and science, and people believe because they are too lazy to verify. I want verifiable facts upon which to base my understanding and my life; i.e., how I will live. Once I find that I have been in error about something, I change. Period.

Everything flows from that. And it all comes down to what I write on the bottom of all my messages: please read below.

When a man who is honestly mistaken hears the truth, he will either quit being mistaken or cease to be honest.

richard, while I respect your opinion, there are things that fall outside the realm of knowledge and science. how one treats fellow travelers is one. your love for your wife is another - it's not based on science, it's emotional. like it or not, we are emotional beings, who like to be treated with respect and consideration. we don't NEED that, but we all get pissy if we don't get it. I've always been a big respecter of the "golden rule" - in terms of this thread: if we are honestly willing to consider the opinions of others, they may be honestly willing to consider ours. we all could learn and grow. it may not be science, but it is learning.

your love for your wife is another - it's not based on science, it's emotional.

kiki, did you read the comments and the replies that I made on that post? I was trying to explain that my love for my wife came because I decided that it would.

Now, please do not take this wrong; I live by what I consider to be THE Golden Rule. And, it is based on what Jesus said; the First Great Commandment is to love thy God etc. etc. The Second Great Commandment is to love thy neighbor as yourself. Well, what, exactly, does that mean?

It took me a while to figure this out, but this is what it comes down to; First, do no harm.

Pretty simple, kiki, but what does it mean? Exactly what it says. I do not have to right, after I accepted my wife, and went to bed with her, to EVER harm her. Not by word, and not by deed. Not by commision, nor by ommision. I made that decision BEFORE we were married (marriage, by the way, is not by a piece of paper; it is the marriage act consumated in the bed). From that time forward, I belong to her, just as she belongs to me, and to damage her would be self-damaging.

Just as I knew that by totally encompassing her in love, I, in turn, would be totally encompassed in love. Kiki, this is how the world works; what goes around, comes around, and the people who do not understand this suffer throughout their lives for that ignorance.

But this is not just about my wife; it is about ALL relationships, which means that you DO NOT permit others to err either. And, you do not, by your example, mislead others.

We have a moral obligation to be our neighbors keeper. But you must dig down very deep to find the true understanding of what that means.

Do you know one of the reasons that I do not drink soda pop? Because others, seeing me do so, would take that as an example as to how they should live. And not just the ones in my family; others, as in neighbors.

Do you know why I do not use, nor have, credit cards? Nor, borrow Federal Reserve credit? Because others, seeing me do so, would take that as an example as to how they should live. And not just the ones in my family; others, as in neighbors.

Do you know why I do not eat pork, or shell fish, nor any of the earthly things prohibited in the Bible? Because others, seeing me do so, would take that as an example as to how they should live. And not just the ones in my family; others, as in neighbors.

Kiki, I learned about all of these things, and I stopped, before I came to this understanding. However, knowing this, as my neighbors keeper, is what keeps me on the straight and narrow. As I am required to be.

So this goes back to what I said; opinions are a dime a dozen, and no one has to look very far to understand how far off base we, as a people, are; simply examine what has happened to the United States and America over the last 100 years. And in large part, that has happened because people settled for opinions, and forgot about the facts. And, the proof. We accepted what we were told, and did not bother with verifications.

Anyway, I hope this makes things a little clearer. Blessings, Richard
