I only caught a tale end of a discussion Chris Matthews had on his show today regarding re-instating the draft. He had 2 Iraq War vets debate the topic. Did anyone catch the show today? I think this is rather significant that a MSM show like Hardball is bringing the topic to light. It could also be that Matthews has some vested interest in the subject matter - 2 draft age sons. Here are some comments on Chris Matthews website - as one might expect the pro draft posters are either women yacking about universal service ( as though their generation ever had that onus) or Vietnam War vets who want others to suffer the same loss of rights and limbs and opportunities that they themselves had suffered. http://hardblogger.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/08/13/315342.aspx#comments

Yeah. After two months of NOT making quota, then having to give up 20K to even get close to July's quota, the Army is getting desperate. Should the maniac in the WH decide to continue the so-called "surge" they will end up increasing the tours to 18 months. I once had a blue surge suit. The pants kept riding up my ass.
I dont quite get the corollary there, but I do get your drift. I have an internet friend that has been called in, he is 50 years old and says he is the oldest Major in the Army.
Keith Olbermann also covered the subject of the draft today. Keith's coverage was better - news clips from the Vietnam era etc. He also interviewed a pretty articulate war vet who annihilated the idea of using conscription for elective wars like Iraq, said draft should only be used for a catastrophic attack on the USA by another nation or if China attacked Taiwan (like who cares about Taiwan?). So now Lute's trial balloon is getting discussed beyond NPR - I hope our politicians are getting not stop phone calls from parents and draft age college kids.
If we're going to have a draft; we need to prioritize...draft the sons and daughters of Congressmen and women first...sons and daughters of CFR members...sons and daughters of members of the current administration...sons and daughters of the controlled media, ESPECIALLY sons and daughters of right-wing talk radio hosts...sons and daughters of registered Republicans. THEN maybe we can get around to drafting the sons and daughters of 'plain folk'...if there's any need for them after drafting those already mentioned.
Oh yeah- Right. Here- take my 18 year old son and send him to die for . . . Taiwan. That will play well among . . . nobody.
I caught that also. I’ve noted a lot of Jew neocons are always equating Taiwan and Israel, i.e. we MUST defend Taiwan, just like we MUST defend Israel ‘till the last marine dies. I’m way past my fighting age, but I wouldn’t fight for either one, hell I wouldn’t bother to walk across the street for them. As you said: “Who cares!” What is the neocon interest in Taiwan?
Sure- and then those sons and daughters of the DC connected - when drafted- end up pushing paper in air conditioned trailers well behind enemy lines and their big "war story" is about how once a mortar shell exploded 4 miles away from them- or organizing USO shows or "commanding" military run golf courses (there are over 200 US military golf courses world wide right now). The day when the sons of the mucky mucks actually put themselve in harms way is long dead. No one but rubes and dopes believes in the necessity of these wars and that who is fighting them (along with simply those trying to escape poverty and get some security in their lives- which the military provides).
And by the way- a draft under any circumstance is slavery. A nation worth defending doesn't need to draft anyone in case of catastrophic attack. Volunteers should be lining up to defend the country - for free. Necessary just wars of defense don't need drafts. (and they don't need billion dollar ridiculous over the top recruitment ad campaigns either- like showing a knight on horse back in his shining armor wielding his sword against a dragon- then morphed into a marine in parade uniform as just one moron example among many.)

It's interesting to note that a large percentage of German's leaving their country from the 1700's up until World War One did so for one reason- the draft. They were fleeing the ever present militarism of their Prussian overlords that would draft men (depending on the era) for 10 to 25 years. Often- a village would hold a "pre-emptive" funeral for a man drafted- as he most likely wouldn't return- nor his body. A plot would be dug and a casket lowered with some of his personal items and a marker placed- and a party to see him off after. In fact, many immigrants to this country came to escape the nationalistic militarism that was overtaking all of Europe especially after the 1848 "revolutions". They came to America- the one Western civilized country (save for Switzerland)- that had a tiny military and no draft and whose population had a healthy hatred for standing armies and viewed military "service" as a career for dolts and losers. The Businessman was the "hero" Americans looked to for inspiration- not the soldier. Now? 2007? Americans love their standing military more than anything. It is the most respected institution in the country. Indeed- it is literally above criticism. I view this as a clear sign of a culture and country on a downward slope. It indicates a slave mentality and a lack of confidence in ourselves.

I know the perfect way to stop all this war and draft nonsense. Replace every soldier in our military, under the age of 50, with someone the age of 51 and above. I guarantee you, you'd have world peace in a matter of hours. When the young stop dying for the ideologies and insanity of the old, that's when you'll have world peace. The problem is that when you're still young, and have such ideas, there's always some old rich fucker who will be happy to send your ass off to go fight so he or she can have just a little bit more.
Dying for old bastards, and their old money, isn't my idea of freedom.
NO VN war vet with character would ever wish that fate on others out of spite.
