The commies were always stating that their 'system' was granting the most rights and freedoms to the citizens. For example, when challenged to explain the absence of 'freedom of speech', the commie commissars would state that people had the most extensive freedoms of speech, with only a couple of tiny exceptions:
- speech advocating the overturning of people's regime - speech that was racist, anti-semitic or plain hateful in nature
All other speech was permitted.
I believe that we are just where the commies were 20 years ago or coming pretty, pretty close.

The terror-driven police states don't really need Gulags following a successful campaign of revolutionary terror. Fear does the trick and everyone behaves as expected OR BETTER because they fear the consequences of non-compliance.
People don't discuss 'funny' topics with their coworkers, for example, because they fear dismissal. At home, they don't openly speak their minds because they are afraid that their children will repeat what they heard to their playmates or in school and trouble might follow. Now, that the news told us that someone like Padilla could get life in prison simply for talking about undesirable activities, even fewer individuals are going to risk their liberty or their dignity (enhanced interrogation anyone?) by expressing themselves even on the so-called anonymous (LOL) Internet discussion forums.

Asheville again? Hmmm...I visit Asheville several times a month; and I swear I see an anti-war march winding its way through downtown every time I go. Impeach Bush/Cheney signs are everywhere...it's a 'leftist enclave'. Maybe the fascists are justing pushing their luck to see how far they can go, or maybe they're just pissed over the upside-down flag incident from a few weeks ago...

Indeed. That's why I don't get it...what this guy did isn't unusual at all; not by any stretch. That's what makes me think this was a retaliatory reaction by the authorities. Here in East Tennessee; the Baptist-controlled cops just would have shot him dead for speaking out against the Holy War in the Middle East.

#14. To: ghostdogtxn, ASHEVILLE N.C POLICE SEPT (#0)
I am writing to tell you about an abuse of power in Asheville, NC by a police sergeant.
Dear Stormtrooper Sergeant Riddle:
Perhaps I could pay you a visit and we could talk over coffee in your favorite Asheville breakfast joint. I'm was a Dallas officer for many years and you, sir, do not deserve to wear a badge. You've defiled it and trampled the Constitution you've sworn to protect. You're a disgrace and so is your Chief for allowing you on the street.

You said it.
