The commies were always stating that their 'system' was granting the most rights and freedoms to the citizens. For example, when challenged to explain the absence of 'freedom of speech', the commie commissars would state that people had the most extensive freedoms of speech, with only a couple of tiny exceptions:

- speech advocating the overturning of people's regime
- speech that was racist, anti-semitic or plain hateful in nature

All other speech was permitted.

I believe that we are just where the commies were 20 years ago or coming pretty, pretty close.

I will share a secret with you.

The terror-driven police states don't really need Gulags following a successful campaign of revolutionary terror. Fear does the trick and everyone behaves as expected OR BETTER because they fear the consequences of non-compliance.

People don't discuss 'funny' topics with their coworkers, for example, because they fear dismissal. At home, they don't openly speak their minds because they are afraid that their children will repeat what they heard to their playmates or in school and trouble might follow. Now, that the news told us that someone like Padilla could get life in prison simply for talking about undesirable activities, even fewer individuals are going to risk their liberty or their dignity (enhanced interrogation anyone?) by expressing themselves even on the so-called anonymous (LOL) Internet discussion forums.
