A majority of Americans do not trust the upcoming report by top US commander in Iraq on the progress of the war, a new poll says.

US President George W. Bush has frequently asked Congress and the American people to withhold judgment on his so-called "troop surge" in Iraq until David Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq, and Ryan Crocker, US ambassador to Iraq, issue their progress report in September.

But according to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released on Friday, 53 percent of people polled said they suspect that the military assessment of the situation will try to make it sound better than it actually is.

The poll also indicates that most of America's mind is made up about the war--72 percent said the report will have no effect on their view of the war.

White House press secretary Tony Snow reacted to the poll, saying that he hoped that "people do not try to engage in personal attacks on Gen. Petraeus or Ambassador Ryan Crocker."

Twenty-six percent of those polled feel that the Iraqi government is making progress, while 69 percent said that it wasn't.

Of those opposed to the war, 47 percent said Petreaus' report could not change their mind while 17 percent said it could.

The survey was based on interviews of 1,029 Americans by telephone between Aug. 6 and 8.

Government reports on their own activity are always honest and upfront. To think otherwise is to be a communist (at least according the idiot reich-winger definition of "communist").

Who gives a fuck what a majority of Americans think about anything? The majority of that majority either don't vote or will continue to vote for the two party fraud no matter how many lies the two party fraud perpetrates and no matter what actions the Congress takes that negatively affects them. The Congress and President could line up and rape the family members of the "majority" in the name of the two parties and the majority would STILL flock to the polls and vote for the two party fraud. And the members of the two party fraud knows this, which is why they have become so bold in their actions.

Hmmmff. Today a communist (or liberal, or muslim-lover, etc.) is anyone that doesn't agree with them. I've been off the Inet for awhile and when I came back I noticed that there are actually people on LP and FR calling Ron Paul a liberal and a leftist. One of the people that sticks out in my mind was someone calling themselves MillerCreek. What a brainchild that person is. Talk about riding the shortbus! Whether one agrees with Ron Paul or not, no one with even a tiny bit of political knowledge can honestly call Ron Paul a liberal or a leftist.

It also shows how far to the left the Republican Party has traveled. Ron Paul is doing nothing more than espousing ideas that the Republican Party has always claimed to believe. At least until they gained power.

What I didn't understand until Bush was elected was just how shallow an understanding most GOPERS have of the American political conservative tradition. They really don't have any concept of what conservatism is or is not.

To a great number of GOPERS like your "MillerCreek" their notion of "Conservatism" is little more than being pro war and pro military without question. Vietnam shaped this generation of GOPER "conservative". See- because the "left" oppossed Vietnam- means that the right must support all wars all the time now. Rather infantile. Mainstream GOPER "conservatism" is best characterized as a sandbox worship of the military and war, supporting anyone in a uniform in everything they do, subservience to the government which they trust without question (as long as a GOPER is running the show) and the belief that there is this group of "liberals" out there who want to "Destroy America".

GOPER "conservatism" hates "Rights" and characterizes them as liberal tricks. Indeed, if GOPER "Conservatives" were honest with themselves they would admit that they share nothing in common philosophically or politically with the founders. Their founders are FDR and Truman- the men who presided over the dawn of the Mega Warfare/Welfare state that they worship and grovel before. On a side note- as FDR and Truman were both whole hearted participants in the orgy of civilian killing in World War Two (total war being a "leftist" concept itself that these reichingers are unaware of) they now call anything less than wiping out entire civilian populations as "Running a PC war". Yes- trying to avoid killing civilians is "Running a PC war." Actually- if they knew anything they would know mass killing of civilians during wars is PC.

Basically GOPER "conservatism" isn't a right wing. We don't have a right wing in this country in the mainstream. GOPER's are REICH-wingers. They are basically pro war- pro federal government fascists. They crave to be lead and to surrender to authority.

Funny you should read that on LP and FR, because quite coincidently I read a heavily posted thread on Daily Kos about Ron Paul and 95% of the kossacks were vehemently opposed to Ron Paul because they claimed Ron Paul was an eeeevil Republican through and through. There are 557 comments, most of them negative to Dr. Paul.

"Because Ron Paul Is Nuts, That's Why"

I think both the GOP'ers and the Dem's have gone so far off course from their party's positions that a guy like Ron Paul scares them, confounds them because he's so genuine and true to upholding the constitution - Ron Paul represents the best type of leader ( constitutionalist/classical liberal/old fashioned conservative...whatever) for the kind of America that the Founding Fathers had created/envisioned to become.

Now both the GOP'ers and Dem'ers have so twisted and warped their own party's ideals that instead of embracing Dr. Paul, they are fearful and disavow Dr. Paul bearing any semblance to their party's mandates.

You hit the nail on the head. If today's "conservative" ever actually read Kirk or Burke and didn't know what they were reading, and didn't know who Kirk or Burke were, they would denounce what they read as being liberal gobblygook.

Conservative's of yesteryear would despise what the "right" has turned into.

It took me a while to figure out the left/right game played in American politics.

The "Two different wings on the same bird of prey" both fear Ron Paul because his views attack their core belief that the State is the answer to everything. "R"s and "D"s simply project a warmed over version of the same political ideals with a few worthless trappings like abortion or welfare reform thrown in to add a touch of difference.

Each group is nothing more that statist control freaks with some cosmetic changes. That's why Ron Paul sends both sides into a tizzy.

Like in 1920's Germany. The German communists recruited heavily from the Nazi party and visa-versa because both groups had a great number of political beliefs in common. The same was true in the Spanish Civil war, both sides (Supported by Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia) made sure that the anarchist anti-government fighters would not survival the war.

"The more I see of life, the less I fear death" - Me.
