Republican Fred Thompson is second in most of the national polls and he's been actively taking part in the Iowa State Fair. An interview with Fox News suggests that he is very close to making an announcement, "in the next few weeks".
He thinks it is still a little bit to early to get in the race. Fred Thompson's odds to become the next US President sat at 4 to 1 at http://Sportsbook.com.
Thompson spent the day Friday unapologetically defending his career as a Washington lobbyist paid to influence the government on behalf of an abortion-rights group, a leftist Haitian leader and other special interests.
"Don't confuse the lawyer with the client," Thompson told The Associated Press.
The former Tennessee senator and actor discussed his eclectic career path, the war in Iraq and his ambitious plans to reshape the GOP during a 30-minute interview after introducing himself to Iowa Republicans in classic Midwest fashion: He toured the state fair with popular Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa.
He should get the AIPAC bump for his quiet trip to honor the special ones...I'm anxious to see his campaign contribution list. Cleaned up by bank managers?

Mr. Thompson. You are a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. The CFR wants to end American sovereignty in 2010 by forming a North American Union with Canada and Mexico. My question is twofold: Do you want to end American sovereignty in 2010? If not, would you quit the CFR and pledge here and now to not appoint any members of either the CFR or the Bilderberg Society to your administration? Would you pledge to refuse their campaign contributions? If I may ask another question, the CFR represents Wall Street. Do you think that they selected 2010 to end American sovereignty because they expect the dollar to ollapse in 2009 causing a depression far worse than 1929?
