Potter star Radcliffe bares all in "Equus"
Tue Feb 27, 2007 6:28PM EST

By Paul Majendie and Mirja Spernal

LONDON (Reuters) - Teenage film star Daniel Radcliffe threw off Harry Potter's invisibility cloak on Tuesday to appear naked on a London stage in the psychological thriller "Equus."

Radcliffe, who found fame as the young wizard in the Potter films, plays a troubled stable boy who ritualistically blinds horses in a production that has caused a flurry of excitement among his hordes of teenage fans.

Radcliffe confessed afterwards to first night nerves but said he had no qualms about baring all after two weeks of doing the play in previews.

"After the first couple of previews, I didn't really care anymore," he told Reuters Television.

Asked about all the publicity over his nude scenes, he said "It all seemed to imply the nudity was gratuitous which it isn't at all."

He won a standing ovation on opening night at London's Gielgud Theater and fellow actors who came to watch were full of praise for his courage in taking on such a gruelling role.

"I am so impressed with his choice of play and the career Daniel Radcliffe is having," Hollywood star Christian Slater told Reuters.

You could hear a pin drop in the auditorium when 17-year-old Radcliffe performed his naked scene with actress Joanna Christie, who plays his girlfriend.

"It is an incredible part for a young actor. He is taking a big risk," British actor Richard E. Grant said.

Not since Nicole Kidman bared all in "The Blue Room" in 1998 and was hailed as "pure theatrical Viagra" has so much hype greeted stage nudity in London with publicity photos of Radcliffe helping to ensure two million pounds in advance sales.

Pottermania struck at the stage door with fans clamoring for autographs at performances of Peter Shaffer's play, first produced in 1973.

But did fans of the clean-cut boy wizard object to their hero smoking, swearing and appearing naked on stage?

Radcliffe said: "We have had some pretty hardcore fans at the stage door and they have all been very supportive and lovely about it."

But Radcliffe, who has had voice coaching and worked out in the gym in preparation, at least has one familiar face on stage.

The role of the psychiatrist who treats the tortured boy is performed by Richard Griffiths, the portly British actor who plays Potter's vile Uncle Vernon in the Potter films.

Griffiths said of Radcliffe's performance "You keep forgetting he is only 17. He handles himself with such aplomb."

However one famous face was missing on opening night -- JK Rowling, author of the Potter books that became a global publishing phenomenon before being turned into box office hits.

But Radcliffe said "She is coming to see it at some point. I don't think she objected in any way. She was very happy to see me going off and doing something else.

did fans of the clean-cut boy wizard object to their hero smoking, swearing and appearing naked on stage?

And... will the US law enforcerers arrest the guy? The director? Place the theater company on the axis of child abuse list? Would any US citizens who watched the play in the UK be arrested for child porn consumption upon their return to the US and be forced to wear penile bracelets or vaginal plugs with embedded GPS transmitters?

There, there. Not to worry. You forget Harry's magical powers. He no doubt temporarily made his penis disappear before disrobing.

Let's hope he doesn't have an "Aunt Clara" moment and forget where he "hid the sausage."

Do you agree that it would be criminal for a US citizen to watch this play?

And the crime would be almost capital if not fully-capital, if the US citizen brought his... let's say 17 yr. old daughter to the theater. Yes?

"It all seemed to imply the nudity was gratuitous which it isn't at all."

That's what they all say.

I do 100 laps in the pool every day. Nekkid. And it's not gratuitous. The shorts bother me when I swim.

So, I had to choose between rashes and blushes :)))

Skinny dippin' is fine, just not at the YMCA or public beaches. Please do not frighten (or disgust) the children and teenagers.

I've noticed in a number of film reviews the use of the phrase "not gratuitous" to justify a scene's nudity. I think it's silly. Why not just say, we like to look at healthy nekked bodies. Or, some of us are exhibitionists. But they never say that. It's always, well it was not a gratuitous sex scene; or the historical context required it. Sure, just like the historical fact is that people like nudity and sex.

An ex-coworker decided to make a living in online porn a few years ago. I learned from this person that 18 - 20 year olds is the norm. So Harry Potter is just about over-the-hill anyway.

Don't worry, I don't charge tickets for my swimming performance. It's meant to be a private activity even though I can't say that I'm embarrassed with my body - anyone who doesn't abuse his own body and spends a little time to stay in shape will have no reason to be ashamed of his looks. Personally, I don't watch porn stuff - they only show bodily functions and the performers tend to look stupid and imperfect.

If there ever was a gratuitous and totally disgusting nekkid scene in a recent movie, it must be the Borat thing. It's puke-inducing. I think that most men don't want to see other men's good-looking nekkid bodies because they abuse their own and theirs look more like Borat's or the fat guy Borat is banging in the Borat movie. I agree that there is no compelling reason to show actors naked or performing bodily functions such as sex, unless the movie or the play are explicitly about nakedness or sex. But... most of the stuff you see in a movie did not have to be there: the musical tracks, color, most of the 'extras' doing things in the background, actors shown eating, walking, dressing-undressing, blinking, stretching, farting, crying, laughing... all these could be classified as gratuitous.

The questions still stands: would it be criminal for a US citizen to watch this play? Like it is criminal to travel to Cuba?

My RN mother liked to make flip references to Grey's Anatomy in regards to porn; it helped keep things in perspective.

I am so glad I dislike Borat and will never see a movie he makes.
