Title: Poway unveils bronze sculpture that pays tribute to city's settlers

POWAY ---- Three years after the city commissioned her and approximately 100 years after the settlers she represents lived in the area, a larger-than-life bronze sculpture of a pioneer woman was unveiled in Old Poway Park. The council's decision to scuttle the project last year left the bronzes without designated a homes until this spring, when the council decided to they should go in the park and at Lake Poway. The second sculpture, "The Pride of the Wilderness," will be unveiled at 9 a.m. today next to the lake's snack shop and boat ramp. The public is invited to attend. The 7-foot-tall sculpture, which includes a baby in the woman's arms plus a dog and chickens at her feet, is one of two the city commissioned from Poway artist Richard Becker in 2004, with plans to install the art pieces outside a community fine arts center once planned for Old Poway.

Thanks for the ping, my kids used to throw this paper. I wonder why the project was scuttled last year. The sculpture looks nice.

Poway and the surrounding communities are very pleasant. Once sleepy suburbs they are now a bit crowded, although you can still find people who own horses. The biggest drawback is the traffic, the highways in San Diego were not designed for the future that has become today, and there are simply not enough alternate routes, like there are in other areas of CA.

It's a lovely statue, no question. My guess on why the time lapse in this story ("project was scuttled last year") had something to do with politics, illegal immigrant politics. I was thinking of starting a pool to bet on year of Impala lowrider first group of vandals would arrive in. I'm gonna go with '64.

More like dweeby 12 year olds. LA's ~100 miles north of Poway. And in San Diego they try not to mention L.A., at all, ever.

Illegals camping in some nearby fields were responsible for some fires in San Diego over the years. Nearby Encinitas (yuppieville), decided the unsightliness of groups of illegals standing on various corners was too much so they arranged for them to wait inside a building. Then whenever someone needed movers, yardwork, etc., they just pulled up to the building. And all the soccer moms said "Thank you" for making our streets pretty again.

What has San Diego done to avoid problems of Los Angeles? I guess being smaller helps, more govt jobs per capita... You blue state weirdos are just a drain on us hard-working east coast communists! (insert loud screeching sound here) excuse me, I think I was channeling Karl Rove on a loose filling or something. Make it stop!

Smaller helps. It's a Navy town, and then there's Camp Pendleton. Lots of DoD contractors. my husband's sister, brother-in-law, and their son live in Poway
and we are considering moving there too
I haven't been there, but my husband was there last month visiting his family
and gave a good report of it
