there is a trend to treat prisoners like garbage in some state & local jails anyway, not in the federal prisons though from what I'm told. In Maricopa County Arizona this Sheriff Joe fellow has raised it to an art form - treating prisoners like garbage. And it hasn't saved the taxpayers any money - on the contrary they lost tens of millions of dollars from several lawsuits where the guards were extremely negligent & deaths resulted.

Insanity is rampant in the government, and never more so than in the prison system. Inmates, wardens, and everyone who choses to work in such places, not much to chose from amoung the lot of them.
The exception being, of course, the very high percentage that were sent there on trumped up charges/were innocent to begin with/were framed by the police/attorneys to cover for someone else. I think it would shock most people if they had any idea just how big that percentage really is.

The pink uniforms are punishment for a very specific violation: jerking off in front of female guards. Seems appropriate to me. You're not being humiliated for being a prisoner, but for acting up while a prisoner. Maybe they should have brown ones for prisoners who throw feces at guards, yellow for throwing urine...it could get to be kinda fun.

In Maricopa County you can't work as a prison guard unless you go along with humiliating the prisoners. It's unbelievable the things they do. The whole system persistently treats them like sub-humans. But if you're a prisoner, then you just have to go along with it and smile.
I saw one day the front page of the Arizona Republic where a whole line of prisoners dressed in nothing but pink boxer shorts (they all wear pink underwear) were actually chained to one another, both hands bound and chained to the next prisoner, a whole line of them, and made to run near-naked in the outdoors for some ridiculous reason. And this photo of these men was on the front page of the paper. For their children & family to see. Can you imagine if women were photographed like that in bras & panties? and put on the front page. incredible!!!
and the classic is about 5-6 years ago Sheriff Joe appeared at a public parade in downtown Phoenix where a long procession of cars in the parade were travelling at 5 MPH through a crowd of people. Sheriff Joe had a big cadillac convertible with the top down with Sheriff's office insignia & colors painted onto it. and he was sitting in the front passenger seat holding a leash, and the leash led to 2 prisoners who were both chained at their hands and sitting on the top of the back seat elevated up above. So it was like a conquering roman army entering rome and having the prisoners bound and lead by a leash by the conqueror. unbelievable!! that's the kind of thing that Sheriff joe does on a regular basis. people could see that leash leading up to the men and them sitting on top of the back of the car. That day it was something they had to do and had no choice in the matter but be publicly humiliated in that fashion.

I am against this branding by the use of a color associated with femininity. It is not a put down to be a female or to wear this color if you are male.
This story speaks far more of the bigotry and sexism of the authorities in these misbegotton places then about the violation of rules by inmates.
There are other ways to punish people for this. Use them; don't make fun or light of femininity. These prison authorities should now better then to do this assumed degrading use of this color. That is a pet peeve of mine.
