I think the melody is actually pretty good, but that bit about leaving the cake out in the rain always struck me as goofy.

Jimmy Webb took a lot of flak for years over those lyrics, and he defended them by reminding critics that it was the 60's and The Fifth Dimension was singing UP UP AND AWAY in my beautiful, beautiful balloon, and there were many other psychedelic lyrics at the time.

I love the song.
