Firefox has become corrupted on this laptop and I'm trying to figure out how to uninstall it. I can't find the add/remove option in the control panel!!!! I'm about ready to toss this computer off my back deck.

it's a laptop i bought basically to use to listen to internet radio so i didn't think it would matter that much. also i wasn't aware how bad vista is at the time.
If you get it fixed, give the Opera browser a try. It has a couple of bugs, but gives you to option of disguising itself as Firefox, making it difficult for worms and viruses to properly attach.
A friend of mine got a new PC with Vista and when he tried to plug it into his existing the network, he ended up screwing everything up so he had to reinstall XP on everything. Said it would be 2 years before he might have to touch Vista again. He (and you) ought to use linux before you trash your new PC.

In that case just reformat the disk and put XP on it. Or even better, put linux on it. Though I should say that perhaps the historic weakest point of linux has been the sound architecture. But the latest version of Mandriva seems to have gotten that fixed, and there's one called Kanotix which seems to have drivers that would make everything work great. Kanotix is easy to get to, just download the data and make a bootable CD from it. Wanna try something different?

Good luck with it, C...I read so many bad reviews of Vista that it cooled my desire for the latest, greatest from MS.
Do you recall what version of Linux Michael Dell uses on his home desktop? Does it start with an "S?" Blanking here...
hmmmm..apparently it's this computer. i just re-installed and am having the same problem. i keep getting an error message that says "the connection has timed out. the server is taking too long to respond." i'm not having any problem with Firefox on my other two machines.
too intimidating for this novice. i think i'll have my nerd reprogram it for XP.
I have Vista Home Premium with IE7. Haven't had one problem. Flawless for 5 months.

I'm certainly biased, but it's not really intimidating. One reason is the kanotix installation CD lets you just boot up any PC into linux and you can try it out. When you are done, just reboot and take out the CD and you're back in Windows. If you want to install kanotix permanently onto the HD, you could do that. I understand if you want to stay on familiar territory but I'd happily assist any way I could.

Excellent. Last I heard they were entertaining the idea of selling preloaded with Linux. I won't resent buying a laptop that's pre-loaded with windows, meaning I won't be funding the MS empire. Especially since all I'd do is reformat it and put linux on it.

ubuntu is the open source OS, and they now have machines with FreeDOS - that would be a blast to the past.
I have a new Dell with Vista and it works fine.
Might be good for playing those old DOS games.

Oh how I miss DOS, dinosaur that it is. Since I do bookkeeping for clients, I have to remain sort of up to date in the real world here. Earlier this year, I was noticing that my poor 10 year old HP Laser Jet6L was in early stages of giving up the ghost. Trying to find parts is a nightmare. I love that old printer because I could use my DOS-based Peachtree Accounting software. The problem was really bad when I did a bunch of calling around/checking and found that I would have to get a newer printer to handle newer software. So I bit the bullet and bought the 2007 Peachtree AND a new HP Laser Jet 1022. Its black and white which serves virtually all my needs. I do have a combo printer-copier that uses color. IF I ever reorganize my office to where I can have that piece of equipment closer to my computer system, I may use it a little more....if not I won't get excited. With all that said, and knowing they don't make software and printers and such compatible with DOS, what would be the benefit of downloading it? I must say, though, after all these years of fighting windoze that I occasionally want to type commands still!
thanks, y'all! i don't know why, but now i can't get Firefox or Opera browsers to work on this machine. maybe it has nothing to do with Vista.
I'm using Firefox on Vista w/o problem. The Operating System (OS) is what matters, not the hardware. Maybe a new download of Firefox?

Here in the OfficeFromHell, I found it simpler to just buy a longer printer cable. Did DOS ever crash, or freeze, or give BlueScreensofDeath?
I never had a problem with DOS. Re the cable.......I have a long enough cable. I have a father who invariable wants to come through the walk area when I go to connect it. And at 94-1/2, it's hard to tell him No, not now! :)
Dell XPS 410. New desktop. Run security once or twice a week, and thats been it. What I have read, early on, the problems were when upgrading from XP to VISTA. Clean machines were not having much trouble.

Does it start with an "S?" Michael Dell claimed to be using UBUNTU Linux. The current release he was using is called Feisty Fawn and a new one scheduled to be released next month is called Gutsy Gibbon. The names are just alphabetical designations with a future one possibly being Happy Hippo or some such thing. It can be downloaded or they will send a free CD copy. A "live CD" version allows the user to boot it from the CD and test the operating system without ever installing anything on their computer.
At http://www.ubuntu.com is a link to Dell's page where you can buy the system. I'm about ready to try it.
