There were reports back in Dec. '05, after Craig helped to filibuster the reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act, that Bush called Craig a "goddamn traitor" and urged the RNC to mount a primary challenge to him before '08.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

First of all, I don't think an "invitation to engage in lewd conduct," which is what Craig did to the cop, should be a crime in and of itself

I reckon that is why everyone does not live in Minnesota, or Minneapolis-St. Paul. Ah........the beauty of america.

Besides, it was not just 1) that he peered into an occupied stall.
Besides, it was not just 2) that he parked his luggage as he did.
Besides, it was not just 3) that he tapped danced.
Besides, it was not just 4) that had him playing 'toeseys'.
Besides, it was not just 5) that had him playing handswipe.

It was the totality of it all.

The piece d' la resistance was the arrogance of producing a card listing him as senator larry craig, Idaho, and commenting as though everyone should kiss his ass because of who he is.

And, the creme d' la creme was, of course, pleading guilty--especially after reading the form regarding truth and guilt.

And exactly why should people needing to use restroom facilities be accosted with offers of sex--or anything else for that matter in a public facility?

His behavior was peculiar, no doubt, but criminal – hardly. He was arrested not for what he did, but for what a police officer interpreted his conduct to mean he wanted to do; because the police officer interpreted his conduct "as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct."

This isn't how his arrest was first described. And I wasn't aware Craig helped filibuster the reauthorization of the Patriot Act. hmmmm...

At 1216 hours, Sen. Craig tapped his right foot.

Was this after noon or after midnight?

If this scenario over at AMERICAblog does unfold with the Senator Larry Craig (R) ordeal, it will be hilarious. The problem for Senator Mitch McConnell (R) is that the longer this thing is drawn out and the more aggressive Senate Republicans become with Craig, the more questions will surround why the ills and corruptions of Senators David Vitter (R) and Ted Stevens (R) and the like aren’t being pursued similarly.

Is this going to be Craig’s defense?
by Pam Spaulding

From WND’s Joseph Farah. Please let Craig try this one. Mitch McConnell will keel over.

Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, didn’t have to plead guilty to sex charges stemming from a men’s room encounter with an undercover cop in Minnesota.

All he had to do was hand the police officer a copy of the U.S. Constitution – the document the senator swore to uphold upon first taking office in Congress 27 years earlier.

There is little ambiguity in Article>http://www.archives.gov/national-archives-experience/charters/constitution_transcript.html">Article 1: Section 6, which clearly states no member of Congress can be arrested while traveling to or from official session.

Craig was arrested just after 12 noon June 11. He cast a vote on a high-profile cloture motion on the Senate floor at 5:55 p.m. that same day.

The question to be begged, of course, would be 'who in the gop forced him to do all the queer actions which caused him to be busted? And who in the gop forced him to plead down?

Its my understanding that our other senator, crapo, and larry are very close; that michael has spoken positively of larry; and so that makes me wonder if larry actually spoke to michael, who is a lawyer.

I'd also like to know the circumstances surrounding the patriot act hold=up, because I've read he went along with something like 95% of bush's bullshit. There had to be some really goofy something; it wasn't that he didn't believe in all the crap that act had.

Have either of them pled guilty in a court of law? Larry had to sign that he was guilty and acknowledge truth and guilt. He also paid the fine and agreed with whatever the judge ordered, which happened to include a year of probation.

They're working on the Stevens corruption charges.......with luck, they will find enough to make it stick and that ol fart can hit the road.

I can't remember the vitter stuff other than his phone number was on the billing records of a madam, I think, and he told his wife he was sorry--but I don't recall if he was sorry for sex or for being on the list or what. Doesn't matter, because he hasn't pleaded anything with the courts where guilt or innocence regarding arrests or charging are done. As far as I'm concerned, he can hit the road, too.

I wasn't either. That would make him a target of either Hillary (who wants those powers herself) or Shrub.

"Letter from Senator Larry Craig concerning the USA PATRIOT Act. email | 11/23/05 | Senator Larry E. Craig

Posted on 12/30/2005 11:53:53 AM PST by Delphinium

Dear Fellow Idahoan:

Over the past week, a lot of attention has been given to the reauthorization of the USA PATRIOT Act, formally known as the "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act." Because it is an important issue, and I have been at the forefront of the debate, I want to take a moment of your time to give you the latest news.

I have been working with members of both parties in the Senate and House of Representatives to address PATRIOT Act provisions that may allow federal investigators to monitor activities of Americans unrelated to terrorism, with minimal or inadequate judicial oversight. Early in the current Congress, I introduced an updated version of my legislation, the Security and Freedom Enhancement Act, or SAFE Act, as S.737. This legislation is designed to protect civil liberties and place reasonable limitations on federal government searches and surveillance, without impeding the war on terrorism.< It garnered support from Senators across the political spectrum.

A number of the reforms contained in my bill were incorporated into the Senate version of legislation renewing certain expiring provisions of the PATRIOT Act, which passed unanimously in late July. This Senate version was also approved by nearly half of the House of Representatives.

While the conference committee charged with working out differences between the House and Senate renewal bills did improve some of the civil liberties protections of PATRIOT, it unnecessarily dropped or watered down too many of these reforms. I and other Senate and House members of both parties believe that with additional time, the remaining problems can be addressed. For that reason, I voted against cutting off debate on the compromise and instead worked to get an extension of the PATRIOT provisions due to expire December 31, 2005. With the extension in place and PATRIOT still fully effective for another five weeks, Congress can resume negotiations and pursue whatever additional hearings or discussions are needed to finalize the renewal bill.

It's worth remembering that when PATRIOT was first enacted, the deadlines on these specific provisions were put there for a reason: to force a review by Congress and a determination whether such controversial authorities should be renewed, revised, or repealed. These are not technical or unimportant matters but policy issues that affect the fundamental rights, freedom, and property of innocent Americans, as well as the security of the United States. It is in the best interests of our nation for Congress to consider all options carefully and thoroughly. After all, this law will outlast the Bush Administration.

It is my strong belief that we can limit and clarify the law to eliminate its problems, without impeding law enforcement's ability to conduct legitimate, necessary investigations of terrorism. That is the outcome I will continue fighting for, because we need to protect the freedoms that tens of thousands of Americans have died for.

I hope this information is helpful to you and would welcome your further thoughts on this or any other matter of concern. If I can be of assistance to you in the U.S. Senate, contact me. For more information on this issue, please read my Securing Freedom Issue Brief.

Sincerely,

Larry E. Craig United States Senator" http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1549459/posts
