The late Israel Shahak, one of the foremost figures in the struggle for justice for the Palestinians, used to frequently remind the readers of his translations from the Hebrew press, that “history is important.” In that spirit, and in consideration of the recent emergency vote by the Teachers’ Union in Britain to rescind its resolution boycotting Haifa and Bar Ilan universities, I am sending the following article from the Middle East Labor Bulletin which reported a similar action taken by the American Library Association in 1993 that overturned an earlier resolution condemning Israel for its censorship of Palestinian libraries and the threatened expulsion of a Palestinian librarian. It describes one of the uglier events that I have witnessed in my lifetime and makes comprehensible the reprehensible; the continuing attempts by the ADL and the organized Jewish establishment to censor any criticism of Israel in our educational institutions, in the media, and in every aspect of American public life, the just concluded conference of AIPAC being only the latest example. “[T]his is not just a cautionary tale about one librarian’s battle against book burning in the occupied territories."
