A Clay County woman's family said it's seeking justice after their loved one died shortly after being shocked 10 times with Taser guns during a confrontation with police.

The family of 56-year-old Emily Delafield said it would take the Green Cove Springs Police Department to court, according to a WJXT-TV report.

In April 2006, officers with the police department said they were called to a disturbance at a home in the 400 block of Harrison Street just before 5 p.m.

In a 911 call made to the Green Cove Springs, Delafield can be heard telling a dispatcher that she believed she was in danger:

Dispatcher: And what's the problem?

Delafield: My sister is waiting on my property.

Dispatcher: Your what?

Delafield: My sister (inaudible) is on my property trying to harm me.

Officers said they arrived to find Delafield in a wheelchair, armed with two knives and a hammer. Police said the woman was swinging the weapons at family members and police.

Within an hour of her call to 911, Delafield, a wheelchair-bound woman documented to have mental illness, was dead.

Family attorney Rick Alexander said Delafield's death could have been prevented and that there are four things that jump out at him about the case.

"One, she's in a wheelchair. Two, she's schizophrenic. Three, they're using a Taser on a person that's in a wheelchair, and then four is that they tasered her 10 times for a period of like two minutes," Alexander said.

According to a police report, one of the officers used her Taser gun nine times for a total of 160 seconds and the other officer discharged his Taser gun once for a total of no more than five seconds.

A medical examiner found Delafield died from hypertensive heart disease and cited the Taser gun shock as a contributing factor, the report said. On her death certificate, the medical examiner ruled Delafield's death a homicide.

The family said it plans to sue the Green Coves Springs Police Department now that it has all the reports regarding their loved one's death.

"We're going to try to compensate the estate and the family and try to get justice," Alexander said.

He said he believes the evidence weighs heavily in favor of Delafield's family and that justice will be served.

"I think that this evidence is going to show, along with some of the evidence we've collected outside of here, that there is no reason Emily Delafield should have died that day," Alexander said.

He said he plans to file a notice to sue sometime before the end of the year.

Let's see...

Crazy wheelchair bound schizophrenic factored out of the gene pool.

I don't see a problem here.

Don't we have enough crazy and dangerous people in our society as it is?

Here's how I would have taken care of the psycho.

I would go to the lumberyard, and buy 3 8' 2x4"s. I would lay one right behind the rear tires.

I would then lay one in front of the front tires.

I then would take the third one, and push the idiot backward with all the force I could muster, knocking the idiot out of the chair.

When the idiot got back into the chair, I'd do it again, and again, until the psycho got tired, and wasn't combative anymore.

I do not have any sympathy for these people for a number of reasons. Calling the cops in this day and age is just asking for trouble. It's best to deal with family problems internally.

The best I can tell it was the victim that telephoned the police.

I weigh less the 110 pounds, and I could have handled the situation. Get a cable like you would use to tie a big dog up, make a loop in the end, lay the loop on the ground then take a long object like a 2x4 or a broom handle to push the chair so that a wheel is in the loop, draw the loop tight up around the frame of the chair and tie her to the nearest sturdy object. Then you sit on the porch, crack a beer and listen to her rant and rave. Let her know that if she throws the weapons down and wants to be reasonable she can then have food, drink and be free, until then if she gets on your nerves, you can just go indoors.

Of course then someone would proby call the coppers on me and have me thrown in the can for some flavor of abuse.

Some days you just can't win for loosing.

The thing that disturbs me most is that the tazer was originally meant to be a tool for police to keep themselves safe in situations that would otherwise require lethal force. Does that mean that had this broad (cop) not had a tazer that she would have shot the woman??

Here's the thing. I don't like crazy people. I see enough of them on the sidewalks panhandling for money and what not on my daily commute.

I am actually kind of glad that this person is gone, because it's one less entitlement payment our government will have to make next year. The unfortunate side effect of having crazy people in our society, is that the police have to be hyper aware of what they're getting into.

People by and large haven't gotten any crazier or more dangerous, it's just that with the population growth, there's just more of them.

I sound like a nazi when I say rounding up the crazies and putting them into an institution where they can't bother the rest of us is a great idea. Some of the more criminal minded should be euthanized. Crazy people do not add anything to our society, except a lot of inconvenience, and worst of all criminal behavior.

Take a look at Congress.

It comes down to intent ... legitimate crazies haven't chosen their lot, and a civil society deals politely with the ill. Our sensibilities are being dulled and yours are non-existent. Alone in a cave, in a straight jacket, is where you belong.

Take a look at Congress.

Someone "elected" them and they should suffer the consequences.

I understand your frustration, but I see things from a different side of the coin.

God never intended for society as a whole to shoulder the burden of the crazy or crippled. These individuals were born into a family, and it is the family's responsibility to car for them. But of course who gives a rats ass about what God wants when that crazy or cripple is part of your family and you are the one caring for them. That is when people cry to the government for assistance, hence pissing off the rest of us.

This falls under the strict liability of Scripture, but we have chosen to trade that strict liability for the communist belief of "from each according to his ability to each according to his need".

But why would anyone pay attention to any little old obscure law such as strict liability if we are willing to ignore one of the famous Ten Commandments "Thou Shalt Not Kill"?
