Glenn Beck: “Jesus and Hitler had a lot in common”

By: Nicole Belle @ 4:15 PM - PDT

It’s unbelievable that he said it, but it’s not as bad as it sounds. It’s just Beck’s authoritarian mind at work, in a really bizarre false equivalency way. In a discussion that revolves around honesty, comedian D.L. Hughley bemoans the lack of a clear front-runner in the presidential race. Beck equates that with his notion of electing based on Cult of Personality:

Watch

BECK: …(Y)ou`re saying that people want somebody that they just think they have all the answers. I`m saying that…

HUGHLEY: No. That`s who we voted for, who we always voted for.

BECK: OK.

HUGHLEY: I`m saying that that seems to be who we vote for.

BECK: I think people want somebody who have room for doubt, but also have the confidence. I think Jesus Christ and Hitler had a lot in common, and that was they could both look you in the eye and say, “I`ve got an answer for you, follow me.” One was evil; one was good. But they both could look you in the eye and have an answer for you. There are very few politicians right now that can look you in the eye and you believe it.

Again, with this kind of incisive political thought, I must ask the question: Why does Glenn Beck have his own show?

I thought that what Jesus and Hitler had in common is that they both didn't smoke... :P

For Hitler, there's no compelling evidence that he stuck with the veggie diet he was prescribed for any appreciable length of time at all.

Hitler was not a vegetarian http://michaelbluejay.com/veg/hitler.html

Albert speer was very plain about what Hitler ate and he shared many meals over many years with Hitler. I will take Speers word.

While it is true that Hitler's doctors put him on a vegetarian diet to cure him of flatulence and a chronic stomach disorder, his biographers such as Albert Speer, Robert Payne, John Toland, et al, have attested to his liking for ham sausages and other cured meats. Even Spencer says that Hitler was a vegetarian from only 1931 on: "It would be true to say that up to 1931, he preferred a vegetarian diet, but on some occasions would deviate from it." He committed suicide in the bunker when he was 56 in 1945; that would have given him 14 years as a vegetarian, but we have the testimony to the contrary of the woman chef who was his personal cook in Hamburg during the late 1930s - Dione Lucas. In her "Gourmet Cooking School Cookbook," she records that his favorite dish - the one that he customarily requested - was stuffed squab (pigeon). "I do not mean to spoil your appetite for stuffed squab, but you might be interested to know that it was a great favorite with Mr. Hitler, who dined in the hotel often."

Speer knew Hitler well after 1932....If you read his book you will find references where Hitler openly made fun of those eating meat.

Hitler was a closet Omnivore.

Rynn Berry is a vegetarian and I suspect he plays loose with words of others so that Hitler will not be one of his kind.

Written by Berry.

Berry has a habit of parading names to fit quotes with no reference.

While the book doesn't quote any primary sources, the secondary sources Berry uses—newspaper articles, memoirs, other historical texts—seem reputable.

Ah, right you are. Well this article, with the ubiquitous Berry, does say his secondary sources seem ok.
