Red Hot Debris. The removal of debris from the collapsed areas requires the safe lifting and maneuvering of very heavy steel beams, often twisted and tangled from the force of the collapse. Some beams pulled from the wreckage are still red hot more than 7 weeks after the attack, and it is suspected that temperatures beneath the debris pile are well in excess of 1,000°F.

These sprayers were also used to cool the high temperature debris before it left the site. Several trucks were returned to the site for additional cooling because the law enforcement officers would not let them through the tunnels leaving Manhattan until they stopped steaming.

It was reported to me by contractors we had been working with. Molten steel was encountered primarily during excavation of debris around the South Tower when large hydraulic excavators were digging trenches 2 to 4 meters deep into the compacted/burning debris pile. There are both video tape and still photos of the molten steel being "dipped" out by the buckets of excavators. I'm not sure where you can get a copy. Sorry I cannot provide personal confirmation. Because an unknown number of people with a hidden agenda that hasn't been revealed planted explosives in the WTC towers without anyone knowing about it and this secret group has been able to keep their identities secure!

The size of everything was enormous. The pile of debris after 30 days of removal operations was still gigantic, over three stories high, with structural steel projecting 7-10 stories into the air. The steam, dust, noise, steel and myriad activities were larger than anything I have ever seen. Temperatures in the pile were over 1,200 °F. Every time an area was opened, fire started in any buried combustible debris. Water trucks and fire engines were used continually. The high temperature debris and water created steam. Dust contained asbestos, silica, metals, molds and mildews. The dust and other hazardous materials from the debris required sprayers to be set up to wash all trucks exiting the site. These sprayers were also used to cool the high temperature debris before it left the site. Several trucks were returned to the site for additional cooling because the law enforcement officers would not let them through the tunnels leaving Manhattan until they stopped steaming. The large grapples (over 8’ long fingers) on large hydraulic excavators performed well and accomplished the vast majority of the debris removal. The debris was very hard on the equipment and created severe operating conditions.

Firefighters hose down rubble at Ground Zero yesterday. The unprecedented structural fire does not have enough oxygen to rapidly devour its enormous fuel supply — desks, carpets, computers, paper, cars and other combustible material contained in and under the 110-story twin towers, experts say. "So what you've got is a smoldering situation," said George Miller, president of the National Association of State Fire Marshals. "Judging from my 32 years of experience, this could burn for a long time." Exactly how long "a long time" is, no one knows for sure. But fire engineers and safety experts told the Daily News that the blaze likely will continue burning for months — until most of the 1.2 million tons of debris are hauled away. A fire needs three things to survive: fuel, oxygen and a heat source. "If you can break that formula in any way, it will go out," said Marko Bourne, a spokesman for the fire administration of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "The problem is how to do that with this fire." While the blaze is starved for oxygen, the scalding steel buried below ground will retain its heat until enough air reaches it or water douses it, said Don Carson, a hazardous materials expert for the National Operating Engineers Union. The jets that exploded into the towers showered them with gallons of jet fuel and raised the temperature of the structural beams to about 2,000 degrees. "There are pieces of steel being pulled out that are still cherry red," Carson said as he stood amid the smoking debris this week. "It's like the charcoal that you put in your grill. ... You light it and it stays hot." Firefighters continue to soak the ravaged 17-acre area with water, but the heavy streams seep only so far into the layered debris. As chunks of steel and concrete are raised by excavation machines, the city's Bravest wet the exposed areas and extinguish flames that erupt from crevices when oxygen rushes in. "We will put it out," said a Bronx firefighter. "It's just a matter of time." The Fire Department has yet to declare the blaze under control. No Blaze Like It Bourne said the blaze is so "far beyond a normal fire" that it is nearly impossible to draw conclusions about it based on other fires. While it is not unusual for underground fires to smolder for long periods of time, these usually occur in landfills or coal mines. Several mines in Pennsylvania and Canada have been burning for decades. The classic example cited by experts is a strip mine in Centralia, Pa., that ignited in 1962 and continues to burn. Forest fires also can rage for months. But Don Smurthwaite of the National Interagency Fire Center said not to come to him for answers to the Ground Zero blaze. "We can always count on that season-ending event — rain or snow — to take care of the fire," Smurthwaite said. "The fires in the World Trade Center are entirely different. All the fuel they need is right there."

The bus had been commandeered by the Port Authority police to transport officers to assist with the rescue efforts. Among the officers on that bus were Christopher Amoroso, Antonio Rodrigues, Dominick Pezzulo, Will Jimeno and Sergeant John McLoughlin. They could see the inferno in the sky through the bus windows as they approached, each man impatient to get there, all of them eager to do whatever they could to save lives. Their shift had started routinely that morning at the bus terminal. The rookies, Jimeno, 34, and Pezzulo, 35, were stationed at the terminal entrances, Jimeno at the north entrance on 42nd Street, Pezzulo at the south entrance. Pezzulo and Jimeno were good buddies, having both graduated from the academy nine months earlier. Word had spread quickly that an airplane had struck the World Trade Center. At that point the general assumption was that the collision of American Airlines Flight 11 at 8:46 a.m. was a horrible accident. Sergeant McLoughlin ran through the bus terminal collecting men who wanted to help downtown. Jimeno and Pezzulo immediately volunteered. Officer Christopher Amoroso When the bus arrived at the site, it was directed to the underground parking garage, passing under the burning North Tower to the South Tower where the men got off. They were one floor below the underground shopping concourse. Sergeant McLoughlin, who had 10 years of experience in emergency services, quickly organized his men, leading them to a storage room where emergency equipment was kept. They loaded a laundry cart with helmets, axes and Scott Airpaks and rushed toward the North Tower, pushing the heavy cart. Officer Jimeno remembers that he had been pushing the cart from behind and Officer Rodrigues told him to shove over so he could help. Officer Amoroso squeezed in next to Rodrigues so that he could push, too. As they raced toward the North Tower elevators, they heard a loud droning sound that none of them could identify. Jimeno asked Sergeant McLoughlin if this was a “second plane” coming in, and before McLoughlin could answer, the floor shook with the impact of United Flight 175 as it ploughed into the South Tower. The men kept pushing their cart, but the shock waves from the collision rattled everything around them. The floor buckled, and the walls started to crack. The five officers ran for their lives. Burning jet fuel rushing down elevator shafts from the point of impact on the 81st floor sent a monstrous fireball in their direction. McLoughlin shouted for his men to run to the freight elevators. As they fled, the ceiling gave way and the concourse above crashed down on them, dispersing the fireball. Officer Antonio Rodrigues The damage was beyond belief, yet some of the lights were still working, and Jimeno could clearly see the destruction all around him. He was on his back, surrounded by debris, his left leg trapped under a slab of concrete. His friend Dominick Pezzulo was face down next to him, covered with plaster dust and chunks of ceiling, but he was alive. Jimeno looked around for the others, calling out to them. Sergeant McLoughlin responded, saying that he was pinned down as well. Jimeno couldn’t see him, but he estimated from the sound of McLoughlin’s voice that he was about 20 feet away. Jimeno called out to Officers Amoroso and Rodrigues, but neither responded. He shouted their names for a full two minutes. Amoroso and Rodrigues had been at the back of the pack as they ran from the fireball. Officer Dominick Pezzulo Pezzulo, who lifted weights to stay fit, told Jimeno that he was all right and started to dig himself out. When he finally got to his feet, he assured Jimeno that he would get him out. But then a deafening rumble drowned out his words and everything started to shake violently. The two men couldn’t see it, but the South Tower was collapsing. Instinctively Jimeno tried to curl up and protect himself, but there was little time to react and, for Pezzulo, no clear course of escape. New chunks of concrete rained down, and a heavy concrete slab the size of a mattress landed in Pezzulo’s lap. The dust was thick, clogging the air. Jimeno was coughing, his eyes tearing as he tried to get oriented. “Dominick!” he called out. “Dominick!” But then it started all over again. Twenty-nine minutes after the South Tower fell, the North Tower started to collapse. Jimeno was desperate to get to his friend, but he couldn’t move. When the noise finally subsided, McLoughlin reported that nothing new had hit him, but that he was still trapped. Jimeno could hear Pezzulo’s labored breathing. “You okay?” he said to his friend. “Dominick? Talk to me.” “Willy,” Pezzulo said, struggling to get the words out. “Willy, I’m hurt bad.”
Five victims of the World Trade Center attack on September 11 spent time recovering at The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas. All of the survivors were burned by flash fires that traveled down elevator shafts and engulfed the lobby of the North Tower after the first plane hit. The five individuals were all treated and eventually released, and three of the victims agreed to be interviewed by various local and national media. Long Island resident Kenneth Summers, 51, a technical support analyst for Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield, was pushing through a revolving door of the World Trade Center when the lobby in front of him ignited. The blast hurled him backward through glass and deposited him outside. Mr. Summers, who underwent a number of skin graft operations on his arms and fingers, was helped to safety by a stranger and transported by ferry to Jersey City and then to Saint Barnabas. Brandon Smith, 39, was trapped in a revolving door minutes after the airline crash. A fireball that came down an elevator shaft exploded into the lobby and scalded the Mountain Lakes resident. Mr. Smith’s condition was initially perilous—he was on a respirator for a week for smoke inhalation damage—and he underwent numerous skin graft operations to repair his hands and ears. Upon his release, Mr. Smith told his story to an audience of fourth and fifth graders at Cedar Grove School as a way to thank the students who had written get-well cards for the five World Trade Center victims at Saint Barnabas. Bloomfield resident Virginia DiChiara, 44, was one of a few survivors from the bond brokerage firm Cantor Fitzgerald. Only four Cantor Fitzgerald employees who were at work on September 11 survived because they were elsewhere in the building at the time. Ms. DiChiara was inside an elevator bound for the 101st floor and had just reached the 78th floor when an explosion rocked the building. When the elevator doors opened, Ms. DiChiara ran through a curtain of blue flame to get to the hallway beyond. She was the only person to escape from the elevator and was then carried to safety by a colleague.

Q: I have a problem with the statement that the steel collected for the investigation is adequate. If I were doing an accident reconstruction, I would’ve been looking for core columns that were hit by the aircraft. It may be okay from a research perspective. It should not be stated that it is adequate from an investigation point of view. A: It would have been nice to have, but may have been very hard to find. There is an issue of how the pieces hit would have survived and how they could be identified. Q: If you go to the site, you look for pieces of the right size, etc. NIST never had the opportunity to do this type of search. A: The Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) started collecting steel in October of 2001. NIST was a member of that team. That team had a list of steel to look for. Some steel had disappeared and was recycled. NIST took over 8 months before the investigation began. We did not have reconstruction in mind. That would have been extremely expensive for us to do. We tried to get all grades of steel. We tried to get pieces from the impact zone, fire affected pieces, etc. If we had the authority, we would have been more aggressive. Q: That’s what I’m saying. Looking down the road to future incidents, NIST should have the authority to preserve evidence useful for an investigation. A: We’ll qualify that statement. Q: The hypothesis is that core columns got above 600 ºC. It would be nice to have pieces of steel to support that hypothesis. You do have trusses from above the floors of impact? A: None of the trusses could be identified as to location, only the truss seats that were considered part of the panels. Q: Have you analyzed the truss seats? A: Yes, but the steel for the truss seats was from various sources, so there was no baseline material for comparison purposes for metallography. C: As John Barsom said, the statement is not accurate. The validity of the model question from yesterday speaks to this issue. I do not believe that we have enough forensic evidence. It may be okay to establish steel quality. There was no effort by the Building Performance Study team to systematically look at the steel. C: The use of the term “adequate” needs to be revisited. There is no core column test to support the hypothesis. The floors came down, the slabs were pulverized. This was unprecedented. Exterior columns and core remained. The floors group will attack this finding.
This one little detail is the best evidence that micro nukes were used to break the foundations out of bedrock. In fact, had the steel remained set into bedrock that would have cost too much to remove (nearby buildings would have to be evacuated before charges could be detonated) so they took care of that little detail in the planning stage.... And the angular cuts of the core columns were evidence of thermite. These bastards took no chances that the remaining debris would require scaffold rental or systematic dismantling of asbestos covered structural steel. And, never mind blasting. Did you even hear of any jack hammering to release steel from bedrock? And, the deaths of those poor people were necessary for cover, because no one would believe them if they evacuated the towers and then they fell. The murders were needed so they could say, "Oh my G_d, I didn't expect that! G_d damn those dirty Arabs!" People who tried to leave were turned around and told to return to their work areas. In fact, these "Arab terrorists" couldn't have done more right by Silverstein if Larry himself had hired them!

Exactly. At its most basic level, this was insurance fraud and urban renewal, with a vengeance. The damage had to be to WTC, and to the extent possible, only to the WTC assets. That's why almost all the damage was to WTC buildings. That's why they had to collapse onto their own footprints. That's why WTC7 had to fall for no particular reason. That's why the buildings had to be exploded, rather than fall down. If the buildings had fallen down, the damages to other buildings would have been in the billions, and the liability claims off the chart. This was a scam for billions, as well as the birth of the Fourth Reich.

• April 12, 2004 - In an article published by the alternative newspaper American Free Press, AFP reports that pools of "molten steel" were found in the basements of the WTC 1, 2, and 7 and quotes Mark Loizeaux, the president of Controlled Demolition, Inc, as saying he would have put "explosives in the basement" of the Twin Towers to help bring it down. NEW SEISMIC DATA REFUTES OFFICIAL EXPLANATION "Peter Tully, president of Tully Construction of Flushing, N.Y., told AFP that he saw pools of “literally molten steel” at the World Trade Center. Tully was contracted after the Sept. 11 tragedy to re move the debris from the site. Tully called Mark Loizeaux, president of Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Md., for consultation about removing the debris. CDI calls itself “the innovator and global leader in the controlled demolition and implosion of structures.” Loizeaux, who cleaned up the bombed Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, arrived at the WTC site two days later and wrote the clean-up plan for the entire operation. AFP asked Loizeaux about the report of molten steel on the site. “Yes,” he said, “hot spots of molten steel in the basements.” These incredibly hot areas were found “at the bottoms of the elevator shafts of the main towers, down seven [basement] levels,” Loizeaux said. The molten steel was found “three, four, and five weeks later, when the rubble was being removed,” Loizeaux said. He said molten steel was also found at 7 WTC, which collapsed mysteriously in the late afternoon. Asked what could have caused such extreme heat, Tully said, “Think of the jet fuel.” Loizeaux told AFP that the steel-melting fires were fueled by “paper, carpet and other combustibles packed down the elevator shafts by the tower floors as they ‘pancaked’ into the basement.” However, some independent investigators dispute this claim, saying kerosene-based jet fuel, paper, or the other combustibles normally found in the towers, cannot generate the heat required to melt steel, especially in an oxygen-poor environment like a deep basement. Experts disagree that jet-fuel or paper could generate such heat. The foundations of the twin towers were 70 feet deep. At that level, 47 huge box columns, connected to the bedrock, supported the entire gravity load of the structures. The steel walls of these lower box columns were four inches thick. Videos of the North Tower collapse show its communication mast falling first, indicating that the central support columns must have failed at the very beginning of the collapse. By now Maryland-based Controlled Demolition Inc. has brought down thousands of structures, reportedly more than all its global competitors combined. Anyone with rudimentary knowledge of blasting techniques can blow up a building. The Loizeauxs implode things down. They collapse a structure inward within its footprint or lay it down in a predetermined direction to avoid collateral damage to adjacent structures. After a detailed structural analysis, they use a minimum amount of explosives strategically placed in holes drilled in critical support columns or strapped to support beams. These are detonated in an exquisitely timed sequence lasting from milliseconds to a full nine seconds. Weight and gravity do the rest. Some Loizeaux techniques developed over the decades are proprietary and the principal reason for their commercial success and safety record. Their implosions have never caused a death or injury. The tools of destruction range from standard dynamite, used to shatter concrete, to linear shaped charges that concentrate the force of a high explosive called RDX, slicing through steel with millions of pounds of pressure per square inch. In a 2001 project, for example, it took a mere 80 pounds of shaped charges to bring down each of two New York gas storage tanks built with 5 million pounds of steel. There is a more somber side to CDI's work. In 1995, the company was asked to demolish the remains of Oklahoma City's Alfred P. Murrah Building, blown up by Timothy McVeigh. The Murrah building was a prelude to the greater disaster of Sept. 11, 2001. Like most Americans, the Loizeauxs were transfixed by the televised scenes of destruction shortly after the first jet struck. But as experts in buildings' vulnerabilities, they knew right away what few Americans realized. "I told Doug immediately that the tower was coming down, and when the second tower was hit, that it would follow," remembers Mark. Horrified, the Loizeaux brothers watched first responders streaming into the doomed towers and tried frantically, and unsuccessfully, to phone in warnings. In the following days, CDI was called to ground zero to consult on safety and develop plans for demolition and debris removal. What if the twin towers, though badly damaged, had somehow remained standing? Without doubt, the Loizeaux family would have been called upon to bring them down. The Tanks Came Tumbling Down "Area residents expressed concern that the demolition would release lead dust into the atmosphere, although KeySpan officials said the process would be closely monitored and that before the demolition most of the paint on the 400-foot-high tanks had been taped over or scraped off. However, some residents and environmental activists felt that removing the remnants of the tanks would pose a danger at least as great as the implosion itself. "There's an enormous amount of steel that has to be cut up," the owner of a Flushing-based business, who filed an affidavit supporting a coalition of groups from Greenpoint and Williamsburg that sought unsuccessfully to block the tanks' demolition, noted. KeySpan uses mechanized scissor-like devices to cut up the steel skin of the tanks, rather than torches, to avoid vaporizing the lead paint. In addition, KeySpan also laid down a special fabric cover to shield nearby buildings and vacuumed streets after the implosion. The first of the two tanks was built in 1927, followed in 1948 by its twin. The structures were known as the Maspeth Avenue Holders and were once used to provide constant pressure in residential gas lines. The holders were last used in 1992 and 1997, respectively. KeySpan, formerly Brooklyn Union Gas, received a permit to implode the tanks from the city Department of Buildings in April. Company officials announced the demolition plans at a community board meeting in June and met with neighborhood groups on Monday, July 11, to inform them as to what precautions were being taken to prevent lead dust from permeating the area. Many area residents felt that the precautions were inadequate and also expressed concern that KeySpan had waited until demolition of the tanks was imminent to inform them that the implosion was scheduled. Cleanup of the remnants of the tanks and the debris following the implosion is expected to take approximately three months.
