Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Mike Hessman hit a solo home run and drove in two to lead Detroit to a 9-4 win over Minnesota in a five-inning rain- shortened game, but the Tigers are now officially eliminated from postseason contention.

The Yankees defeated Tampa Bay, 12-4, on Wednesday to clinch the AL wild card spot.

Ryan Raburn and Mike Rabelo each drove in a pair of runs while Tim Byrdak (3-0) got the win pitching two scoreless innings for the Tigers, who have won three of their last four and finished their home portion of the season with a record of 45-36. Jair Jurrjens started on the mound but did not return after the first rain delay. He gave up four runs on five hits in three innings.

Rondell White hit a three-run double while Nick Blackburn (0-1) got the first loss of his career, giving up six runs -- four earned -- on seven hits in two innings of work for the Twins, who have dropped four of their last six.

Johan Santana had his streak of 123 games where he went at least five innings come to an end as he also did not return after the first rain delay. He gave up three runs -- two earned -- on two hits in three innings.

The first delay, which started after the end of the third inning, lasted one hour, 18 minutes while the second delay began with one out in the sixth with the game being called after a 30-minute delay.

Minnesota jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. With the bases loaded, Justin Morneau punched a single to left to score Jason Kubel. After Michael Cuddyer's fly out to center, White cleared the bases with a double down the right field line.

The Tigers, though, answered with three runs of their own in the second. With the bases loaded and one out, Brandon Inge walked to force home Magglio Ordonez. Rabelo followed with a double to right to score Carlos Guillen and Marcus Thames to make it a 4-3 game.

The teams took the field again in the fourth after the rain delay and the Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Blackburn started on the mound for Minnesota and promptly gave up the lead as Hessman led off the frame with a shot into the left field stands. After Inge fouled out, Rabelo and Placido Polanco hit consecutive singles and Raburn brought home both runners with a triple. Gary Sheffield followed with a single to score Raburn to make it a 7-4 game.

After Ordonez singled, Guillen reached base when Alexi Casilla misplayed a ball and then threw it away, scoring Sheffield. Hessman later hit a single to score Brent Clevlen, who was running for Ordonez, for a 9-4 advantage.

Game Notes

The Tigers won the season-series against Minnesota, 12-6, including nine of the final 10...The Tigers final attendance for the season was 3,047,133, a new club record...Detroit finishes its season in Chicago for a three-game set beginning on Friday...Minnesota starts a four-game set in Boston beginning on Thursday to finish its season.

Detroit's a very good team, but the American League's top teams have better records than the National League's top teams & so they didn't make it to playoffs. The Yankees are wild-card team in AL, but in NL they'd have the best record in the whole league.

There's more parity in the NL. Even the Nationals and Pirates, the two worst teams in the league, have a lot of good young players. They both are well-stocked in the minors, too.

That said, it's unlikely the NL will beat the AL in the World Series. Cleveland and Boston are both clearly superior to any of the NL teams. Still, it would be fun to see the Cubs in the WS, and they have a really good chance. They picked the right time to get hot.

Much like the NFC and AFC. 10-6 in the AFC might be a nail biter to make the playoffs while in the NFC 8-8 can make the cut.
