There's a long-scheduled Republican debate Thursday night on issues of concern to minority voters, and five GOP candidates are taking a pass. The four leading contenders -- Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and John McCain -- all pleaded schedule conflicts. Tom Tancredo dropped out several days ago.

The 9 p.m. ET debate is at Morgan State University in Baltimore and will be shown on PBS, empty lecterns and all. The moderator is Tavis Smiley, he is not happy and he can be expected to probe "whither the GOP" with those who show up.

We kicked off that discussion with this story. For more, see our earlier posts here and here, and USA TODAY columnist DeWayne Wickham on the GOP's big tent shrinking to a "pup tent."

Who will be there? Mike Huckabee, Sam Brownback, Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul and ... Alan Keyes, a recent entry you may recall from races past.

So where will the rest of the pack be?

- Giuliani is in California. As we noted earlier, former governor Pete Wilson is expected to endorse him at an event in Santa Monica. Giuliani also meets voters in Santa Barbara and attends a fundraiser at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster.

- Thompson is in Tennessee. He raises money in Clarksville, Murfreesboro and Franklin.

- McCain is in New York to raise money and give a speech on Iraq to the Hudson Institute.

- Romney raises money in Sacramento and Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. He also meets with voters at an IHOP in Sacramento.

On the Democratic side:

- John Edwards visits an 8th grade class in Hanover then at noon becomes the first candidate to participate in an interactive "Presidential Candidate Dialogue" sponsored by MySpace and MTV. The event will be webcast live on both MySpaceTV and http://MTV.com. It will be broadcast later in the day on MTV and mtvU, MTV57;s 24-hour college network.

Edwards also kicks off an economic fairness tour of New Hampshire with a concert and press conference in Durham, followed by a concert and town hall in Conway.

- Barack Obama is in New York. He appears live on ABC's The View and holds a big rally in Washington Square Park.

- Hillary Clinton raises money in Rhode Island and Maryland.

- Bill Richardson raises money in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

All depends on how you define "winning."

Thompson meets supporters at breakfast fundraiser

The Leaf-Chronicle

During a brief media interview Thursday morning, Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson said his visit to Clarksville was important because of the soldiers serving here and overseas.

"The only thing I'll say in Clarksville ... is thank you. Thank you for what you've done for the country," he said prior to entering the downtown F&M Bank breakfast fundraiser. "I think we're on a good course (in Iraq)."

Additionally, Thompson said he looked forward to coming to Clarksville to meet with "some old friends."

The 9 a.m. private breakfast was closed to the media. Supporters donated $250 to Thompson's campaign to attend the breakfast. For an additional $750, attendees could meet one-on-one with Thompson and have their photograph taken with him.

For more on the story, read tomorrow's edition of The Leaf-Chronicle.

The moderator of Thursday’s Democrat presidential debate said he did not ask the mostly black audience to refrain from applauding candidates’ answers, because blacks are too “emotional” to obey such a rule.

Asked by C-Span host Brian Lamb why he didn’t enforce a no-applause rule for his PBS-sponsored debate like other debate formats, moderator Tavis Smiley explained: “Because black people are an emotional people. I know it wouldn’t have worked.”

Smiley says the black audience attending the 90-minute session at Howard University would not have listened or complied with such a request for silence, suggesting African-Americans are unable to control themselves.

He made the remarks on Friday morning’s Washington Journal program aired on C-Span.

The nationally televised debate featured eight Democrat candidates, including Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois.

The winner will be the one best at glossolalia.

He, like most of the others, was invited to this in February. Nobody has an "excuse." They just think they have nothing to gain and a lot to lose. There was a short piece on NPR about this; Juan Williams, I think, was saying that they think this will hurt them in the primaries and whoever the winner is can make nice later.

They're dreaming. This is pretty much going to deliver the entire minority vote to the Dems. A Repub strategist was on at about the same time saying the Republicans HAVE to get at least 40 percent of the Latino vote in major states (other than California) or they can kiss any chance of winning the White House goodbye.

Look for some MAJOR Latino ass-kissing by the eventual winner.

One of the funnier lines I've heard lately was some Republican official saying "Latinos are Republicans who just don't know it yet." Dream on.

do you think that maybe they were worried about the questions to be asked, or some other aspect of the format? perhaps they were going to allow discussion back & forth between the candidates. If Paul is allowed to speak too much, that is not favorable. If the wrong questions can be asked, that is not favorable.

Frankly; this debate is far more interesting than I expected it to be...Congressman Paul is doing very well, and the reaction from the crowd shows it.

You missed my point. They didn't show up, so they have no balls. Rudy G is impotent due to prostate cancer. I was merely implying that he's permanently nutless, while his opponents were simply nutless on this occasion.

Rudy G is an idiot whose career was over until 9-11 saved it.

Rudy only plays well FAR away from NYC. I have to admit he looked pretty good (compared to Bush, who couldn't seem to locate New York for a week or so) during the days right after 911, but he really screwed that up royally. He's about as popular as head lice in NY these days, in large part because he's a totally arrogant jerk. The rest of the country will discover this if he gets the nomination. Man, when your own kids hate you...

For years, I detested that lame ass combover, but now I wish he had it back. He looks good on TV, and in today's world, that's most of the battle for the presidency. Hopefully, as his real story comes out, people will catch a clue. I cannot see him carrying the South.

Rudy G is impotent due to prostate cancer.

Impotence in men after treatment for prostate cancer is neither automatic or necessarily longlasting. You are mistaken in your belief that Guliani is impotent simply bacause he's been treated sucessfully for prostrate cancer.

It creeps me out even to think about that slimy bastard's glandular problems or lack thereof.

The only "impotence" I hope remains for him is a lack of political power. Should he take over, we'll have the American Mussolini in drag.

You're mistaken in your belief that I have incorrectly drawn a conclusion.

I'm confident he's impotent because it's been widely reported for years.

I'm confident he's impotent because it's been widely reported for years.

Impotence is a temporary side effect for a fraction of men who are treated sucessfully for prostate cancer. It is by no means a permenant result, and can be easily mitigated with corective prescription medicine.

Impotence is also a pretty good defense against the accusation of adultery in divorce proceedings, just ask Raul Felder...
