Title: GALLUP: Trust in Federal Government, On Nearly All Issues, Hits New Low -- Even Less Than in Watergate Era

NEW YORK A new Gallup poll reveals that, as the organization puts it, Americans now "express less trust in the federal government than at any point in the past decade, and trust in many federal government institutions is now lower than it was during the Watergate era, generally recognized as the low point in American history for trust in government."

Among the findings: Barely half trust the government to handle international problems, the lowest number ever. And less than half express faith in the government handling domestic issues, the lowest findings since 1976.

Faith in the executive branch has fallen to 43% -- only 3% higher than it was just before President Nixon's resignation in 1974. At the same time, trust in Congress, at 50%, is its lowest ever.

Gallup has asked about trust in government since 1972. It conducted this year's poll Sept. 14-16 and found the following:

-- Barely half of Americans, 51%, say they have a "great deal" or "fair amount" of trust in the federal government to handle international problems.

-- Less than half of Americans, 47%, now have at least a fair amount of trust in the federal government to handle domestic problems.

Gallup adds: "The candidates running for president in 2008 will be trying to win over a skeptical public. Just 55% of Americans express trust in the 'men and women in political life in this country who either hold or are running for public office.' That matches the low Gallup found in 2001."

Americans are even losing faith -- in themselves. Currently, 70% of Americans trust the public's ability to perform its role in a democratic government, which is down from 78% two years ago when it was last asked, and significantly lower than any other reading Gallup has taken.

"The poll indicates that the lack of trust seems to be directed primarily at the federal government," Gallup concludes. "There has been no observable decline of public trust in state and local governments. Sixty-seven percent of Americans now express trust in their state government, matching the levels of 2004 and 2005. Sixty-nine percent also trust their local government, similar to what Gallup has found since 2001."

It is time to allow those states and/or regions who want to leave the federation to do so.

This country is overpopulated and its regions have little in common with one another.

I think most now recognize Lincoln made one of the greatest and deadliest blunders of history by not allowing self-determination for the Confederacy to proceed.

For all his faults, Nixon's lawlessness looks miniscule beside the excess of the Bush/Cheney administration. Nixon abdicated because he faced unified political opposition. Bush would never have abdicated, because he doesn't respect the country, its traditions, its history, and its guideposts.

Non-sense. You guys need to pay more attention to the posts I do. Linclon CREATED the new United States, which was re-invented OUT of the Civil War, which was never a war between the north and the south. It was a war by the City State known as the District of Columbia against those states which were unwilling to surrender their rights to an all-powerful central government.

It was fought largely with mercenaries recruited in Europe by the District of Columbia and promised land within the United States, and the single biggest change to come out of the 'war' was the creation of a new type of citizenship; United States citizen via the 14th Amendment. THAT new citizenship is domiciled, for purposes of jurisdiction, within the District of Columbia WHERE THE CONSTITUTIONAL RESTRICTIONS ON THE POWERS OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT HAVE NEVER APPLIED.

You both need to review OR just read the post; There is no Constitution; it is a carefully crafted illusion. Part II of that paper is being written, and it covers the Civil War.

the Germans?"

She was right. As a matter of fact, even if she did not understand how she was right. There were more German troops in the Civil War than just about any other nationality. Most did not speak English, and they were organized into German speaking brigades and division and assumed to come from New York, which is where they entered the states.

The next largest number was Irish. Also organized into New York brigades and divisions.

When a man who is honestly mistaken hears the truth, he will either quit being mistaken or cease to be honest.

Keep posting more of your detailed information - some takes a while to digest, but I'm still chewing.

Thanks.
