Clinton Defends Her Lieberman-Kyl Vote

By Leslie on September 27, 2007 at 1:38 PM in Current Affairs

Last night during the Presidential debates, Hillary was rebuked for her yea vote on the Lieberman-Kyl amendment, which designated Iran’s military as a terrorist organization.

One of the sharpest exchanges came over a vote in the Senate on Wednesday on a resolution urging President Bush to designate the Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group. Clinton supported the measure, Biden and Dodd opposed it. Obama did not vote.

“I am ashamed of you, Hillary, for voting for it,” said former senator Mike Gravel of Alaska.

When Clinton defended the vote as something that could lead to sanctions against a group responsible for manufacturing weapons that are being used against U.S. forces in Iraq. But Edwards challenged her for that vote.

“I voted for this war in Iraq, and I was wrong to vote for this war,” he said. “And I accept responsibility for that. Senator Clinton also voted for this war. We learned a very different lesson from that. I have no intention of giving George Bush the authority to take the first step on a road to war with Iran.”

New York may have been most impacted by 9/11, and that’s probably why Hillary voted for this amendment. But Iraq and Iran had nothing to do with the attacks that day. It’s time to stop using 9/11 as an excuse for more war.

The Lieberman-Kyl amendment makes it easier to bring sanctions against Iran and anyone doing business with Iran. It also blurs the distinction between terrorists and another country’s military, which is dangerous in Bush/Cheney hands. As Brian Beutler says,

If Bush’s policy remains an unwillingness to distinguish between terrorists and the countries that harbor them, then he’s all but compelled to strike. There’s obviously no coherence here. It’s completely insane.

You’d think Hillary would’ve learned this by now. But, apparently, not!

P.S. I support Hillary Clinton, and will vote for her in the Presidential election. However, the thought of this amendment in Bushie hands is troubling, and it passed with a majority of bipartisan support.

“I am ashamed of you, Hillary, for voting for it,” said former senator Mike Gravel of Alaska.

I heard something on the radio this morning about somebody challenging Gravel because he declared personal bankruptcy last year.

I wonder if this is Hillary's opposition research at work.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

WTF?

How could anyone be that dumb?

Hillary is a far better choice than Rudy or McCain or that weirdo Romney or the total flake Thompson. I don't care for her, and support another candidate, but she would not be a disaster.

However, Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton really sucks. I like the Clintons, relatively speaking, but we don't have royalty in this country, theoretically.

Wiki reports -

In the 2000s, Gravel suffered from serious health issues, requiring three surgeries in 2003 for back pain and neuropathy;[8] in 2004 he declared personal bankruptcy.[8] After that, he began taking a salary from the non-profit organizations he was working for. Much of that income was lent to his presidential campaign; in 2007, he declared that he has "zero net worth."[8]

Augustus Caesar pretended to have restored the Roman Republic. Ostensibly, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero were only the first citizen.

Hillary is an extreme leftist socialist. She would cater to every far left special interest group that the Democratic Party has started to attract over the years. Bill Clinton actually did a lot of good for the Democratic Party - he moved it to being more centrist and representing what ordinary moderate Americans represent. Frankly if I knew that Bill was guaranteed to be part of the new Clinton Oval Office package, I'd be grateful. Just as we might not be in such a disasterous foreign policy jam today if it had been guaranteed that Poppy Bush and his realist perspective would be part of Junior's administration. If we're going to have political dynasties occupying the Oval Office, at least let the more temperate influences of those family dynasties be guaranteed to hold sway.

I almost wish she was a far-leftie. To me, she's way too opportunistic and the special interests she'll cater to aren't much different than the ones Bush caters to. I think Obama or Paul would make good presidents. Hillary, at least, is competent, but I worry she'll be influenced by the neocons as a way of showing voters she's tough on foreign policy. I don't know how much chance either has, though. Obama might pull it out, just because the hardcore, leftie dems don't like Hillary much. And they flock to the polls in primaries. I'm not convinced the polls reflect what will actually happen in the primaries. Paul may well take NH, but I doubt he can do much after that.

My $0.02.

Hitlery? Oh, come on. Only the freaks over at FRetard City say THAT anymore. What exactly does Hillary have to do with Hitler? Does she want to gas Jews? Does she want to execute Communists and homosexuals? Does she have an amphetamine habit? Is she going to take over the world? What nonsense.

She has high negatives, sure, and I don't exactly love her, but she is competent, moderate and will make a good president. I'll vote for her over all the Republicans, because I am not going to leave the veto power in the hands of warmongers. Ron Paul is the obvious exception. I'll take a chance on someone I basically disagree with on many issues, but who is a decent, honest person. When I was a kid I worked on Barry Goldwater's campaign and even though I now disagree with some of what he stood for (most of which he later disavowed, btw), he's still my political hero because he was honest and decent.

Calling her Hitlery (how did you forget KKKlintoon, as if the Clintons are racist KKK members) is really, truly, unforgivably silly, you know. Unless you can intellectually claim the two are Nazis and racists. Which you can't.

KKKlintoon, as if the Clintons are racist KKK members)

I saw that too. I guess the idiots who wrote it never heard Clinton call himself "America's first black President," and never noticed the fact that he won over 90% of the black vote.

Personally, I can't stand Bill and Hillary Clinton for things that have nothing to do with Hitler, the KKK, or anything else idiotic that Freakers come up with. Bottom line is that they are crooks and opportunists who change their views by 180 degrees, telling people different things on different days just to score higher in the polls (case in point: Warmonger Hillary has remade herself into an "anti-war candidate," and the next day she supports Lieberman's idiotic declaration on Iran). I hate the Clintons (and most politicians) for the same reason that I can't stand used car salesman. Not that Bush, Giuliani, McCain, or Romney are in much of a different league or any better.

Exactly. And apart from dropping a few thousand tons of TNT on the Serbs to get Monica and him off the front pages, ( a small potatoes "conflict" for America) BillyJeff did not come off a humongous post war period that guaranteed economic success stateside no matter who the Prez was. His moderate non-statist-business meddling policies actually helped the economy flourish with no help from big useless wars.

That shit house pol couldn't carry Ike's Jockstrap without snarfing it. Ike was a SOLDIER at one time, not some fucking draft-dodging coke snorting, pussy chasing hunk o'phlegm.

But you asked for it, and you will probably get it..it being the ladder- climbing gash that sold out to AIPAC to become a Senator.

And so the legend goes and grows about Ike's courage and soldiering days.

Sorry to disappoint you, Sodie Pop, but although Ike attended military school and catapulted to the top of the military hierarchy - Ike never did any front line soldiering - he never went face to face mano-a-mano with anyone - the only time Ike saw the "whites of the enemy's eyes" was when he interfaced with Joe Stalin on FDR's behalf but of course Uncle Joe was a designated " an ally" in those days rather than the communist enemy monster that he truly was.

So the long and short of it was that Ike "served" his country not in the trenches but primarily as a military perfumed prince and a desk jockey one at that. Contrary to popular urban legend, Ike sent other American boys to do what he never did. Ike has nothing much over BillyJeff except that Ike was somewhat more entitled to wear an airman's bomber jacket at public photo ops.

Unlike Cheney, who got SIX deferments, Clinton got one for being a college student. He didn't dodge the draft. I burned my draft card rather than take a college deferment, and I wish he had too, but that's life. As for coke, no one has ever made that charge. As far as pussy-chasing, I think I qualify.

You're not making a case here. And as others pointed out, Ike never fired a gun in anger. He sure sent a lot of people to die, though. He wasn't as bad as that coward MacArthur, but he never had to do what he ordered others to do. Sorta like a certain preznit we have now. And his chickenshit VP.

I would advise looking rationally at what Dems and Repukes do. Clinton was the best president since Ike and probably since FDR. Deal with it.

Zionists, mainly through big medcia, control the federal government. Hillary is more than likely to be the next president. In that event America's war against Israe3l's enemies in the Muslim neighborhood will continue without missing a beat. 58,000 Amedricans went to early graves in the Vietnam adventure, not to mention 1,000,000 or so local nationals, and the national security of Isreal wasn't even an issue.
