Clinton Defends Her Lieberman-Kyl Vote

By Leslie on September 27, 2007 at 1:38 PM in Current Affairs

Last night during the Presidential debates, Hillary was rebuked for her yea vote on the Lieberman-Kyl amendment, which designated Iran’s military as a terrorist organization.

One of the sharpest exchanges came over a vote in the Senate on Wednesday on a resolution urging President Bush to designate the Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group. Clinton supported the measure, Biden and Dodd opposed it. Obama did not vote.

“I am ashamed of you, Hillary, for voting for it,” said former senator Mike Gravel of Alaska.

When Clinton defended the vote as something that could lead to sanctions against a group responsible for manufacturing weapons that are being used against U.S. forces in Iraq. But Edwards challenged her for that vote.

“I voted for this war in Iraq, and I was wrong to vote for this war,” he said. “And I accept responsibility for that. Senator Clinton also voted for this war. We learned a very different lesson from that. I have no intention of giving George Bush the authority to take the first step on a road to war with Iran.”

New York may have been most impacted by 9/11, and that’s probably why Hillary voted for this amendment. But Iraq and Iran had nothing to do with the attacks that day. It’s time to stop using 9/11 as an excuse for more war.

The Lieberman-Kyl amendment makes it easier to bring sanctions against Iran and anyone doing business with Iran. It also blurs the distinction between terrorists and another country’s military, which is dangerous in Bush/Cheney hands. As Brian Beutler says,

If Bush’s policy remains an unwillingness to distinguish between terrorists and the countries that harbor them, then he’s all but compelled to strike. There’s obviously no coherence here. It’s completely insane.

You’d think Hillary would’ve learned this by now. But, apparently, not!

P.S. I support Hillary Clinton, and will vote for her in the Presidential election. However, the thought of this amendment in Bushie hands is troubling, and it passed with a majority of bipartisan support.

WTF?

How could anyone be that dumb?

Hillary is a far better choice than Rudy or McCain or that weirdo Romney or the total flake Thompson. I don't care for her, and support another candidate, but she would not be a disaster.

However, Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton really sucks. I like the Clintons, relatively speaking, but we don't have royalty in this country, theoretically.

Hillary is an extreme leftist socialist. She would cater to every far left special interest group that the Democratic Party has started to attract over the years. Bill Clinton actually did a lot of good for the Democratic Party - he moved it to being more centrist and representing what ordinary moderate Americans represent. Frankly if I knew that Bill was guaranteed to be part of the new Clinton Oval Office package, I'd be grateful. Just as we might not be in such a disasterous foreign policy jam today if it had been guaranteed that Poppy Bush and his realist perspective would be part of Junior's administration. If we're going to have political dynasties occupying the Oval Office, at least let the more temperate influences of those family dynasties be guaranteed to hold sway.

I almost wish she was a far-leftie. To me, she's way too opportunistic and the special interests she'll cater to aren't much different than the ones Bush caters to. I think Obama or Paul would make good presidents. Hillary, at least, is competent, but I worry she'll be influenced by the neocons as a way of showing voters she's tough on foreign policy. I don't know how much chance either has, though. Obama might pull it out, just because the hardcore, leftie dems don't like Hillary much. And they flock to the polls in primaries. I'm not convinced the polls reflect what will actually happen in the primaries. Paul may well take NH, but I doubt he can do much after that.

My $0.02.

Hitlery? Oh, come on. Only the freaks over at FRetard City say THAT anymore. What exactly does Hillary have to do with Hitler? Does she want to gas Jews? Does she want to execute Communists and homosexuals? Does she have an amphetamine habit? Is she going to take over the world? What nonsense.

She has high negatives, sure, and I don't exactly love her, but she is competent, moderate and will make a good president. I'll vote for her over all the Republicans, because I am not going to leave the veto power in the hands of warmongers. Ron Paul is the obvious exception. I'll take a chance on someone I basically disagree with on many issues, but who is a decent, honest person. When I was a kid I worked on Barry Goldwater's campaign and even though I now disagree with some of what he stood for (most of which he later disavowed, btw), he's still my political hero because he was honest and decent.

Calling her Hitlery (how did you forget KKKlintoon, as if the Clintons are racist KKK members) is really, truly, unforgivably silly, you know. Unless you can intellectually claim the two are Nazis and racists. Which you can't.
