It’s rather unclear what the point is, since when I was there they had no sign and I had to go over and ask. They insisted that it wasn’t full of blood, just red water to promote Showtime’s signature color. When I asked again if it was blood, they responded, ‘I’m saying no, but I’m nodding yes.’ Then they gave me some hand sanitizer. Have you heard about this California scheme to split the giant state’s electoral votes by congressional districts? It basically works like this: The gerrymandered redneck districts that have given America such congressional stars as Duke Cunningham, John Doolittle, Jerry Lewis, Duncan Hunter and Dick Pombo will also vote for whatever weirdo finally wins the GOP nomination. And by some deliberately confusing system, the votes for president would be divvied up by congressional district and then the Republican (who never wins in California unless he is Ronald Reagan) gets an Ohio-sized slice of the electoral vote pie.

At the epicenter of the area designated to the martyrs is the by now famous Fountain of Blood. This is a multi-layered cement con–struction with a single fountain in the center of the uppermost level which is the smallest in diameter. The fountain oozes a red liquid that falls in thin ripples from each level to the one beneath it. The liquid is thin and not quite as deeply red as blood, and the structure is most disturbing when the fountain is turned off: the cement platforms bring to mind the permanently stained floor of a slaughterhouse.
