DEA arrests 15 in raid of Ore. meth 'super lab'

12:07 PM PDT on Wednesday, June 1, 2005
By KGW and AP Staff

BROWNSVILLE, Ore. -- Federal investigators late Tuesday announced the arrests of 15 people linked to what they're calling a methamphetamine "super lab" in the Salem area.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said the lab located in a small, unassuming mobile home north of Brownsville in Linn County was capable of producing more than 90 pounds of meth in under three days time -- enough to intoxicate the entire adult population of Portland.

Ninety pounds of pure meth would make 400,000 doses. If cut to street purity of 50 percent, it would make 800,000 doses.

Agents called it the "biggest" meth lab "ever seen in Oregon" and said it had been in operation at least five months before they raided it.

More than 90 state and federal law enforcement officers were involved in the drug bust that occured late last week.

During the raid, authorities said they seized about 200 pounds of chemicals used to make meth: 150 pounds of iodine and 20 to 30 pounds of red phosphorous. Those chemicals make it possible to convert pseudoephedrine, a common cold remedy ingredient, to methamphetamine.

Also seized were three pounds of the manufactured drug itself, nearly $200,000 in cash, five vehicles and seven guns, including a fully-loaded assault rifle.

"A clandestine meth lab this size is very rare in the district of Oregon, it's very rare," said Asst. U.S. Attorney Jennifer Martin.

In Oregon, only a handful of "superlabs"-- defined as a lab capable of producing at least 10 pounds of meth per batch -- are uncovered each year, added Sgt. Joel Lujan of the Oregon State Police drug enforcement section.

DEA officials said that such "superlabs," often operated by Mexican drug trafficking organizations, now produce about 65 percent of all meth sold in the United States.

Of the 15 people arrested at the Brownsville lab, most were Mexican citizens living in Salem, according to indictments filed in federal court in Portland.

Five of the 15 arrested were charged with conspiracy to manufacture meth. Sonia Violet Garcia, 20, of Brownsville, was arraigned last Friday.

Four others, all Salem residents, are scheduled to make initial court appearances Wednesday: Arturo Arevalo-Cuevas, 22; Miguel Silva Chava, 26; Venancio Villalobos-Soto, 40; and Adriana Arevalo-Cuevas, 29.
