They're going crazy out on the street as Cubs clinch. Yanks just lost and Red Sox clinched. Diamondbacks won earlier, so all that's left is the wild card in the NL. It's all over in the AL. Pretty amazing night, particularly the total collapse of the Mutts and the run the Phillies have made. A couple of weeks ago, the Phils were going to be lucky to get into the wild card. Now they're up one with two to play. One of the best years for baseball ever, apart from the Bonds joke.

South Florida as in the Tampa South Florida? Beat West Virginia? You gotta be kidding me. I used to live right near that campus, and man were they awful.

It's a very interesting situation with the National League having 5 teams so close together, and the American League having the teams with better records especially boston & Yankees who have the 2 best records and are in the same division.

But Arizona Diamondbacks have only now clinched a minimum wild-card position. They could still lose the western division as San Diego is 1 game back and there are 2 games yet to play. In the National League only the AZ Diamondbacks & Chicago Cubs have clinched playoffs so far. Philadelphia, Mets & San Diego compete for 2 spots now.

but what Philadelphia did at end of season is awesome.

here is story about Arizona Diamondbacks clinching.

it is amazing to me that the whole season for the Diamondbacks came down to the last 3 games played today, Saturday & Sunday. if they were to lose all 3 games, then they wouldn't even make the playoffs. But by winning 2 or 3 of them they win the Western Division.

The Mutts have been in first place nearly all year. If they lose one more game or Phillie wins two, they won't even get into the playoffs as a wild card. They either win the division or go home. I don't remember this ever happening before. In first place with three to play and not even get the wild card.

I'm a Braves fan and we had an outside chance to win the wild card, but fell short. I'm rooting for the Phils now, if only because of Rollins, who deserves the MVP very, very richly.

Usually the teams with the best three starting pitchers meet in the World Series. It will be interesting to see how this one turns out.

Jim Bunning's '64 Phillies won't be the bigggest chokers anymore.

I've already said too much.

The Mets were up by 7 with 17 to play. If they lose now, it will be the biggest choke in history. It's tied again, and today's games are going to be amazing. I'm watching the reruns of The War, but I'll be flipping around to see what's happening. Seriously, if the Mets lose, our grandchildren will be reading about it.

Although he was a great pitcher, Jim Bunning is a loathsome person and I would prefer he remained the example of choking. But I really hate the Mets, so I am truly conflicted on this one. I think I'll take the high road and root for Rollins. There has never been a time in baseball where there were so many great shortstops, and he's the best of the the bunch. Just in the NL East there's Ramirez, Renteria, that punk from the Mets, Rollins and even Felipe Lopez with the Nats is pretty damn good. I never see anything about this, but when you look at baseball today, the crop of shortstops is just amazing. The Braves have two shortstops batting .330. When I was a kid, the average shortstop hit .230.

With no walks.

You're right, compared to those banjo-hitting shortstops, today's shortstops are off the charts.

Bill James has Bunning deserving the Cy Young a couple of years, once with the Tigers, and then in 1967 with the Phillies, when he was 17-15 with 5 of the losses 1-0.

Yeah, when I was a kid, the best pitchers in baseball were Spahn, Koufax, Marichal, Gibson and Bunning.

Can you imagine losing FIVE times by 1-0? I think Walter Johnson lost a bunch like that, but not five in one year.

But he's routinely named "dumbest senator" year after year.
