Religion See other Religion Articles Title: AN ARK FOR THE PENTAGON - NO SEPARATION OF SYNAGOGUE AND STATE No Separation of Synagogue and State: An ark for the Pentagon By Gal Karniel Haaretz Jan. 11, 2006 An ark (for holding the Torah scrolls) was recently installed in the Pentagon's synagogue, whose ceiling was damaged in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Artist Moshe Gani designed the copper work symbolizing the 12 tribes of Israel that adorns the ark. "I wanted to create something that had both modern art and Israeli art," he says. Gani, 44, is a graduate of the Vitale School of Design (1991) and works in the Danny Henker store in the Bnei Brak Design Center. "I just stood in front of the ark and then the muse came to me," he says. He used to have a studio in the Jaffa flea market. "The colors and aromas of the market inspired me, but around five years ago, something happened, and I had to close," he says. Now he designs mezuzas, Torah scroll crowns, mantles and lecterns for Hasidic rabbis (he designed one for the Admor of Pzemyslan, pronounced Parmishlan). His works, intended primarily for synagogues commemorating living rabbis or honoring the memory of deceased rabbis, are heavy, because of the copper and have a certain naivete to them that is reminiscent of children's drawings. "Children's art," he says, "is pure. There is no evil or desire in it." He adds: "Working in Judaica allows me to perpetuate my art. An ark is something that is not replaced even after a 100 years." Gani studied Judaism and kabbalah and during his wanderings met Simcha Paluch, a builder of synagogue arks from Bnei Brak. Paluch was commissioned in April 2005 for the Pentagon synagogue job. The Pentagon's chaplain at the time contacted his son, Yosef Paluch, who lives in Brooklyn and manages his business in the United States. "I was very excited and impatient before the work started," says Paluch. "The Pentagon is one of the most important institutions in the U.S., and the ark is what my business revolves around and on top of that, I'm emotionally involved in it." Paluch, 53, is internationally renowned as a builder of synagogue arks (in Israel, there are only two or three people who do this). He started off his professional life as a carpenter. Until 20 years ago, he was building mostly kitchens and bedrooms. Seven years ago things started to take off. "A synagogue ark is a costly thing," says Paluch of the difficulties of the market. "The Torah scrolls, in any event, are now kept in a safe, because of insurance requirements. When you build a synagogue, first you put in a bimah and benches and by the time you get to the ark, there's no money left, and most synagogues make do with a decorative board." He attributes his success in the U.S. to the effort he makes, which comes from the heart. "In America, if the carpenter doesn't earn well, he won't do the job, and there isn't a lot of profit in making arks." A decision to do something The way Paluch sees things his path from a kitchen carpenter to one of the world's leading manufacturers of synagogue furniture was fraught with miracles, coincidences and divine providence. For example, he relates that in 1996 following the death of the Admor of Gur, Rabbi Pinhas Menachem Alter, he came to prayer services and saw that the new admor was praying using a Jewish Agency-issue table, covered in laminated plastic. "I decided to do something," he says, "and the next day I came to prayer services together with the new admor (Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh Alter) carrying an elegant table. If I'd requested permission to bring it in, they would've turned me down. But we happened to arrive together, the admor and I, and the table became a fact." When the admor asked to pay, "I told him that I would rather receive a blessing," says Paluch, "and he said that I have good hands and an artist's sense, that I should focus on special things and let others handle the financial aspects." Paluch earned a name after creating the ark for the synagogue of the Dushinsky Hasidic sect on Shmuel Hanavi Street in Jerusalem. When Paluch got the Pentagon job, he put Gani in charge of the adornments. "The ultra-Orthodox are very conservative, but in the Pentagon, I felt I had a free hand," says Paluch. "Other than dimensions, they didn't insist on anything." He says there is no explicit Halakha (Jewish law) on building arks for Torah scrolls. "It's important that the Torah scroll is not positioned less than 90 centimeters off the floor and you need to have some emotional attachment to the matter, prepare yourself mentally for the work." Gani agrees. "When dealing with things that are very deeply spiritual," he says, "it's not an easy matter and almost always there are unforeseen delays. Usually it involves some moving personal story or it's in memory of someone who died." As an example, he cites the mantle for a Torah scroll he designed for a Netanya synagogue. During the procession to bring the Torah scroll to the synagogue, some patrons in a nearby cafe were so entranced that they joined the procession and thus were saved from a deadly terrorist attack - a car bomb exploded there. "In most cases," says Gani, "I donate my work and the materials. It does me good. I feel innocent, clean and pure." Pentagon 9-11 Memorial Chapel Hosts Historic Torah Dedication October 09, 2005 WASHINGTON D.C.— On the sacred ground at the Pentagon in the spot where on September 11, 2001 terrorists crashed a plane into the Pentagon killing 189 people, a Torah scroll now resides in an ornate Israeli-built ark whose steel door is secured by a safe lock. On Monday, September 28th, over 150 military personnel, guests and dignitaries gathered at the Pentagon Memorial Chapel for the dedication of the Torah, recognizing the Jewish members of the U.S. Armed Forces. In front of the standing-room-only crowd, Rabbi Shmuel Wolfman of Jerusalem, completed the last letters of the scroll. “The dedication of a Sefer Torah in the mightiest fortress in the most powerful country in the world validates true strength, which is the strength of Torah which is a moral and ethical power,” said Rabbi Sholom D. Lipskar, founder and chairman of The Aleph Institute who presided over the ceremony. The Torah dedication, a first for the home of the U.S. military establishment, was a cooperative effort between The Aleph Institute, a Miami-based national non-profit Jewish organization devoted to Jews in the military and the Pentagon. The Torah scroll was donated by Jacob “Hank” Sopher, a prominent New York real estate magnate. “There is no better way for Jews to express their gratitude to America than to place a Torah in the Pentagon, which has preserved our freedom,” said Sopher. "The Torah is the source of all monotheistic faiths,” said Dov Zakheim, former undersecretary of Defense. “That’s where we all began.” In the past two years, Sopher has sponsored two other Torahs, also written by Rabbi Wolfman. One was for The Shul of Bal Harbour, Fla., the other for the Chasam Sopher Synagogue on Clinton Street on the Lower East Side. A third Torah, also sponsored by Hank Sopher, travels around the world for the use of Jewish military personnel at various military bases. “The significance in the room was palpable,” said Lipskar. “I stood next to the chief of the army chaplains and saw goose bumps on his arms. He was saying ‘this is the real word of God.’ He kept repeating that.” The Chief Chaplain of the Pentagon, Chaplain (Col) Ralph Benson said that, “this day is the answer to a prayer, to have the Torah, the word of God, in our building, as part of our chapel at ground zero. It is especially gratifying to hear the concerns that guests of The Aleph Institute expressed for our service men and women.” “It is not just an historic event,” he said, “but a blessing.” “It was an awe-striking experience,” said Moshe Barouk, Aleph’s Director of Operations. “The room was filled to capacity with military personnel and out of town guests all in honor and respect of this new Torah dedicated at the Pentagon [chapel.]” Chaplain Andrew J. Cohen of Bolling Air Force Base in Maryland called it a triumph of good over evil. “In this spot, where the plane struck on September 11, here we choose to place our Torah,” he said in his address to the crowd. “Not as a museum piece, not on display, but to be used in worship, honored with dignity, to guide, inspire, and empower all peoples to the great cause of freedom.” “It was especially moving to complete the Torah in the place where the Pentagon itself was physically wounded, and then repaired and completed,” said Major Elizabeth Robbins, a Jewish service member. The mainstream “Christians” have picked up on this and say the same thing to defend such occult works as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and other stories of that ilk. True Christians know that good does not triumph over evil, but rather God triumphs over evil. Matthew 19:17 tells us that there is only one that is good and that is God! There are no good witches, and there is no good witchcraft! The false concept that good instead of God triumphs over evil has caused people to believe that a man such as Clive Staples Lewis was a Christian author. In reality, he was a witch and a member of The Thelemic Order of the Golden Dawn and was on assignment to write books that would teach neophyte witches the concepts of “Christianity” so that the witches can better understand Christians and defeat them. Sadly, many Christians thought the books were for them, so the plan of the occultists worked with a double punch. Lewis wrote such books as The Screwtape Letters, which is a fictional conversation among demons on how to defeat Christians. The Aleph Institute, an organization linked to the Chabad-Lubavitch movement previously known for helping Jewish prisoners, was approved last month by the Department of Defense to endorse chaplains. Endorsing agencies provide a required seal of approval for any religious leader who wants to join one of the three branches of the military. The Miami-based Aleph Institute will join the Jewish Welfare Board's Jewish Chaplains Council, which, since 1918, has been the only body endorsing Jewish chaplains. The chaplains council is run by the Jewish Community Center Association and brings together the Reform, Conservative and Orthodox movements to vet candidates. The approval of a Chabad-Lubavitch body is particularly notable because Chabad rabbis — known for their eagerness in reaching out to unaffiliated Jews — are currently not able to become chaplains because of a military regulation banning beards. The new body will endorse rabbis from other corners of the Orthodox world, but it is also likely to lead any efforts to overturn the military's prohibition on chaplains having beards. In the past, Orthodox rabbis have quietly complained that the Jewish Chaplains Council did not seem interested in working to change the rule. Zakheim said the production of these planes for Israel would cost the US taxpayer billions of dollars. Rabbi Zakheim sounds like the guardian of the public purse and quite a patriot, doesn't he? On the other hand, Zakheim lauds Schneerson, and says that to "tie the freedom of the country to the memory of the rebbe is a marvelous thing." Rabbi Zakheim is familiar with the Reeb's work. He knows about the Naughahyde laws. He knows about Schneeron's life-long dedication to destroy the Bill of Rights, to create a Talmudist theocracy where Christians and others can be put to death for following a non-Naugahyde religion . . . I suspect Rabbi Zakheim is not a guardian of the public purse. I suspect Rabbi Zakheim is not a patriot at all -- at least not an American patriot. I enjoy reading 'Last Trumpet' every month...we're due for a new one any time now.
It's very good...I used to read it often a few years ago...but I lost track of it...it came up in a search.
