The battles you have never heard of. Mindless slaughter after generals screw up. This is the best episode so far. How about losing 1500 dead and 6000 wounded to take a worthless air strip? Or losing nearly an entire battalion of Japanese-American troops to take a worthless town in France?

The episode is repeating in a few minutes, at 9:30 CDT. A big wow. Until now, I knew virtually everything in the series, but enjoyed seeing it presented this way. This episode is mostly unfamiliar stuff, in part because the armed forces don't like talking about these massive failures.

Good to hear, it's up next for me. I keep learning from this series too.

And today I enjoyed re-watching some of the previous episodes.

I also have paid attention to the boots-on-the-ground comments about commanding officers; like the officer who stayed 20 miles from the front line (in North Africa), or the officer who threatened to shoot cowards (to the Japanese-American unit) who then himself becomes shell-shocked at the death of 3 of his men and was basically led away.

This one will really piss you off. I'm watching it again, and just noticed the Episode title: FUBAR. This is just a great, great piece of film-making.

Ken Burns really does know how to make an old faded still photograph come to life.

One of the things which radicalized Howard Zinn during his service in WW2 was having to bomb a French village at the end of the war for no apparent military reason.

They have a journal (illegal then) from a guy from Alabama named Eugene Sledge, who was quite a writer. One line, paraphrased, was about how he slowly came to the realization that he was expendable, and coming from a culture that values the individual so highly, "it was the ultimate feeling of loneliness" to realize your life had no value.

That's a moving statement.
