A lot can happen over 800 pages...

Eight hundred pages? Dude, you need to switch substances. Lay off the speedy stuff and move into the slower things, like trading in the caffeine for a nice amber ale. Take a breath, slow down a notch or two, try using fewer words to say more. Practice haiku, that'll get you in the right mood. Use rich words and paint with a wide brush, instead of the staccato pontillism of profanity and a profusion of verbs. Just my humble opinion.

Ulysses was about 800pp.

Yes. One question: Who actually read Ulysses? Anyone? Oh sure, lots of people say they did, like lots of people used to claim to have read Naked Lunch. But who actually did? Really, did anyone get past page ten in either of those books?

Well, as a musician I get a lot of input from people who have little if any musical background, and often their input is valuable. If I hear something negative from one person I don't worry much about it. If I hear similar comments from multiple people then I worry about it and work to improve myself. So take my input for what it's worth and don't sweat it too much.
