Kittle Book Charity case? Barry, Barry disappointing Tuesday, May 31, 2005

Ron Kittle is no fan of Barry Bonds — not after his tense encounter with the slugger at Wrigley Field in 1993. Here's an excerpt from Kittle's book, describing how he approached Bonds with a couple of Bonds' game-worn San Francisco Giants road jerseys, asking him to autograph them for an auction for Kittle's charity for children with cancer:

"I paid about $110 of my own money for them, so they could be auctioned off at the golf outing. I did that all the time for stars like Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Derek Jeter and Roger Clemens. When I tell them how their autographs help the cause, every player gladly signs — with one exception.

I walked up to Bonds at his locker in the Wrigley Field visitors' clubhouse, introduced myself and said, "Barry, if you sign these, they'll bring in a lot of money for kids who need help."

Bonds stood up, looked me in the eye and said, "I don't sign for white people." If lightning hits me today, I will swear those were his exact words. Matt Williams and other Giants were in the room and they heard what Bonds said.

I stood there for a minute, and the veins in my neck were popping. I've only been that mad a few times in my life. I was going to beat the (heck) out of him, really kick his (butt), but Williams saw what was happening, so he came over and got between us. Matt said, "Ron, that's just the way he is."

I said, "White guys aren't the only ones who get cancer," but Bonds had turned his back on me and walked out of the clubhouse. Somebody must have run in and alerted Dusty Baker, who was the manager of the Giants then.

So Dusty came out of his office, put his arm around me, gave me a big old hug and said, "Aw, Kitty, he's just got that (bad) attitude again." Dusty gave me an autographed team ball for the auction, but I never got the Bonds jerseys signed. Later, I gave one of them to Scott Paulson, the Wilson sporting goods representative, and shredded the other one. But that day, I drove from Wrigley Field at about 150 miles per hour and sat there, fuming.

I'll never forget what that man said. So if Barry Bonds is looking for a breath of fresh air to live and I'm the only one who has to give it to him, unfortunately, the man will die. I just don't like guys like that."

Asked about the incident, Kittle replied, "It's a true story. How could I make up something like that?"

Bonds' spokeswoman declined comment on Kittle's story. A Giants team spokesman also declined comment.

I used to be a baseball fan many years ago. I could quote statistics and talk about players and games and all that nonsense. I made money picking Pittsburgh back in 1979 in the World Series where they came back from a three game deficit to win.

Then they had strike after strike after strike in the 80's, and I finally decided that I just wasn't going to take it any longer, and I went on strike (this was one or two strikes before the big strike that cancelled the World Series - I beat a lot of people to the punch on that one).

I have not watched a baseball game since, or any pro sport for that matter. I just don't care any longer. It's all just big business and greedy bastards and I could just care less about any of them.

Gold and silver are real money, paper is but a promise.

I too have adopted the same sentiment and ignore sports completely. What a huge waste of time ... now they even supply the masses with oval track racing so the grits, rednecks and hill-billies can focus on sports rather than the multi- cultural swamp waters rising above eye-level.

Sports in the world today is similar to the circus in Roman days.

Reverse racism (blacks or mexicans that hate whites) is far more prevalent than the stereo-typical racism discussed frequently. So-called hate crimes committed by blacks or mexicans against whites are seldom reported even though they occur at a 1000 to 1 rate !!! [When was the last time you or anyone else witnessed a couple of white guys fleeing a black neighborhood with a TV under their arms ???]

The real story will be the treatment of whites when the become a decided minority. Look around .... when whites are a minority they are slaughtered wholesale ... American whites need to wake-up and ARM-UP !

After watching some of the video of the anti-protestors re the illegal issue..

Peter Scaenk was discussing a number of riots that have broken out between blacks and mexicans at California schools that were extremely violent, and the school authorities had to call in police to quell them.

This Blacks vs. Mexicans racial animosity is deeper than their animosity against whites in my opinion. I've seen it first hand and would be willing to bet the farm on the blacks. I've witnessed them kicking the shit out of a gang of Mexicans 5 times their numbers !!!

By the way ... Viva la France !!!

That very well could be.. when I was working in the innercity, the illegals were viewed by the residents as taking jobs.. there weren't many jobs there to begin with and those few that were there were being taken over by the illegals.. Also the local catholic church bought the illegals a house!! The residents were very upset by that..

If I had my way, Bonds, McGuire and Sosa would suffer the fate of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and be banned from baseball. Their steroid-enhanced home-run records are insults to Babe Ruth and Roger Maris.

Look what happened to Pete Rose, but, hey, he was a white man. If Bonds and Soasa were not involved, McGuire, like Rose, would be hanging in limbo.

Life is a tragedy to those who feel, and a comedy to those who think.

I'm still a baseball fan but I don't watch it nearly as often as I used to.

Baseball,as I grew up with died when the Phillies made Pete Rose the first player to make 1 million dollars a year. Since then,it has become purely a game of greed.

Clowns like Barry Bonds has given baseball a huge black eye that it doesn't need.

Occasionally ESPN Classic will air old baseball highlight films from the '70s and prior decades. As I watch them,I realize how much the magic has left baseball.

There is just something about the players from prior eras that make me feel all warm and fuzzy with just the mention of their names. I can remember growing up when we played baseball from sun-up to sundown at the local ballfield. Every kid took the name of their favorite players and tried to emulate them.

Names like Orlando Cepeda,Ernie Banks,Harmon Killebrew,Tony Oliva,Norm Cash,Frank Howard etc. stir fond memories of those hot and hazy summer days playing on a dusty ballfield at the local playground. Now ,it's idiots like Bonds.

Ah, the good old days. Baseball,I hardly know thee anymore. Yogi Berra, please come back!!!

Sloppy generalization: black folks really can't hang 'black failure' on white America any longer. All of the pieces for black success are in place, including varieties of preferential treatment. In the absence of excuses, anger toward whitey has actually increased.

Black culture abides two cultural practices that assure failure: the almost enthusiastic acceptance of wildly unstable families, and the tolerance of juvenile impetuousness in word and deed.

For almost two years my family has attended a predominently black church in our neighborhood. I played piano and organ for services, end to end for a year, pro bono. Hey -- we all worship the same Lord, right? That's where the common ground ends. While most of the folks there are exceedingly upright, it is as plain as day that there is a problem with white folks. Especially white men. I went from church to church with the worship team, and in very inner-city churches, I got the "what the f*** are you doin' here, boy" treatment. Er, helping out with music?

I reiterate: the PC, 'institutional' excuses for black failure have fallen away. Whitey didn't have a hand in the emergence of the brutish and disgraceful hip-hop culture, did it?

They are fighting over the "race victim" turf. There's big money and big power in that turf and neither side wishes to concede any of it to the other.

This space intentionally left blank.

This is true. I witnessed this back in the late 70s when I worked for a social service agency in San Diego. The battles over the money between Neighborhood House (Black) and M.A.A.C. Project (Latino - they don't like Hispanic, it reminds them of Spain - so I was told), were amazing. And, here's the kicker: the only organization actually doing any good was THE SALVATION ARMY!!!! No kidding, and they got ZILCH $$. Homeless people ended up at the Mission, at some other Church charity or at the Salvation Army. The $$ for these 2 competing racial/political groups never really got down to help any poor homeless.
