Dems propose war tax to make Iraq more unpopular

by Matthew Hay Brown

Senior Democrats, apparently looking to make the war in Iraq still more unpopular, now are proposing a new tax to pay for continuing combat operations.

The plan unveiled today by House Appropriations Committee Chairman David R. Obey, Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman John P. "Jack" Murtha and Rep. Jim McGovern would spread the sacrifice among all taxpayers by tacking a "war surcharge" on top of the federal income tax. Americans would pay up to 15 percent more on their taxes in order to raise the $150 billion needed annually to keep the war going.

"If you don’t like the cost, then shut down the war," Obey said today.

The Democratic leadership, still looking for a way to seize control of the war, has yet to endorse the new tax.

"I agree with the proposition that this generation of Americans ought to help pay for the war that we are carrying on," House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer told reporters. "Whether that means that we need to have a tax increase at this point in time, we haven’t discussed that."

Obey said his committee would not consider President Bush’s $190 billion request for the war until the new year – and signaled that he was now willing to condition future war funding on plans for a U.S. withdrawal. That would be a change for Democrats, who have tried to attach strings to war spending, but have said that they would not try to end the war by cutting off funding for the troops.

Today, Obey told reporters he had "no intention" of approving a funding request "that simply serves to continue the status quo."

Gee, I thought that is what the "D"s were elected to do. So much for that plan.

If I, as a tax payer, tried to "shut down the war" I would at best end up in Gitmo or more likely be shot.

What wonderful options. Taxed to death or shot to death.

Real land of the free, eh?

You're right.

The demofreaks got in the majority because they were expected to end the war, but... they use the excuse of the war to try to raise taxes - which was the main reason they've been in the minority for all these years.

Now, all they need to do is NOT to approve the money for the war. No filibuster can prevent them from not funding the war. But they fund it, and then they try to raise the taxes.

I would vote for the party that promised to first torture, then massacre all politicians if elected.

Antiparty - find out why, think about 'how'

and then they try to raise the taxes.

"But but but - we're NOT RAISING taxes. This is a SURCHARGE!"

Bastards. Like there's ONE IOTA of difference.

They did this to certain traffic ticket fines in TX. They passed a law saying that if you had a ticket within the PRIOR 3 years, there is a SURCHARGE applied. So if you get a "no insurance" ticket for example, you not only have the original fine - but are supposed to pay this "surcharge" each year for the next 3 friggin years!!!

This "surcharge" shit will be the new way they rob us blind on everything imaginable. They've started adding a "fuel surcharge" to a lot of the "bigger items" in hardware stores and such...

This shows how Democrats are dumbasses.

You pass a change to the IRS code which gives every taxpayer the option of taking a $1000 tax credit OR not taking it and having that money fund the Iraq war after April 15, 2008. If taxpayers choose not to fund it by taking the tax credit, the war funding ends. This approach gives taxpayers the ability to KEEP their money instead of spending it on the war, and each taxpayer gets to choose.

That approach works off of the presumption the Dems WANT to "end the war".

They DON'T.

They aren't dumbasses. They're finding ways to profit from the war and toss the people further into the abyss just like the Reps.

They don't need to make it more unpopular. They have a mandate to end the war but they have other intentions. Plain and simple. They're criminals and cowards just like the administration and the globalists they work for.

Exactly. And they ALL work for the globalists (except perhaps Ron Paul).

Just how in denial, misguided, or outright willfully ignorant does one have to be to deny that there is a "global agenda"??? Even writers of Scripture over 2000 years ago saw this one coming.

A draft is the only way to make this war unpopular enough. Something those in power know well. Which is why they will do anything in their power to keep one frombecoming reality.

Until their next false flag operation to make people beg for one and for even more war that is.

I'd say that about 90% of Democratic voters want the war to end.

I'd say most of the Dems in congress want the war to end, but most are also water boys and girls for AIPAC and Israel, so most have been compromised.

The only way to get the Ugly Americans' attention is to fuck with their cars, or their paycheck.

A dollar or so additional motor fuel tax per gallon would neatly do the trick.

But the real objective isn't to stop the war, is it? On to Iran.

Mike Flaherty: Yeah, it's been there a long time. I wish I knew which corner.
