On Carol Ann Gotbaum, one of our valued readers noted to me this morning that the reason they allow police to use tasers is due to the fact that so many of those police need to control die as a result of choke holds.

One of the thugs used a choke hold on her. she was probably screaming and cursing them and one of them got angry and put the choke hold on her to shut her up...but got carried away and killed her. It's extremely easy to do. Many have died from this maneuver...that was one of the reasons tasering became so popular... choke holds can kills quickly...ask any cop.

Choke Hold Use In Law Enforcement

The law-enforcement lateral vascular neck restraint (also called sleeper hold) is a widely taught blood choke in law enforcement, and is performed from the behind by putting an arm around the neck with the crook of the elbow over the midline of the neck. By pinching the arm together while assisting with the free hand, the carotid arteries and jugular veins are compressed on both sides of the neck. This hold does not put any pressure on the airway, but can quickly turn into an air choke if the person being strangled resists the hold by attempting to turn around.[4]

Due to risks of fatal injuries, law enforcement agencies may discourage, restrict, or forbid its use. The Los Angeles Police Department, for example, prohibited its officers from using the air choke and restricted use of the carotid hold to instances where death or serious bodily injury was threatened in about 1985, after routinely using chokeholds for many years.[6] The Singapore Police Force does not include any form of chokehold procedures in its unarmed defensive techniques.

Ehrlich: However, the connect the dot reality with what we have before us today is the added dimension of the shackling and the MOUTH TO MOUTH by one of the officers (manifestly one of the arresting officers and if so then a slam dunk that she was abused). The Phoenix police statement pointed out that the female officer just saved someone's life that week (this inclusion happens psychologically to reflect a consciousness of guilt) but let me see the names of the officers going back into the detention cell administering mouth to mouth (the one whom Gotbaum vomited into his mouth).

So remember that the reality here is not only to unmask the truth but to allow you to yourself connect the dots.

Here is an email received showing you how this group helps me pick up on things that I miss:

"Why is the time on the camera 1 hour ahead of alleged arrest time? This is real time, no? its shouldn't be in EST. CCTV is in real time for the time of the location it takes place.. I cant explain why there is an hour difference.

The arrest time was approximately 2:53 p.m.

Ehrlich: I have to say that the time on the surveillance video is not correct. Since third party medical assistance was called prior to that time, it would speak to the conclusion that the time as a lot of goes today in the name of security AND NATIONAL SECURITY is WRONG. The simple answer is that the people there were too lazy to roll back the clock on the video by one hour. It is the same attitude displayed in going to the scene and so quickly taking her down (three police officers to take down one woman).

Ehrlich: I don't know who is commenting about the events but I would guess someone protecting the police. You must watch this video. The woman obviously is distraught and the reaction is so overboard. First, three tsa officers surround her then three police officers approach and what they do in near immediately take her down and cuff her bands behind her back. Then the commentator throws in they tried to then to calm her down (unsuccessfully) before then dragging her from the scene. The commentator via supplemental video shows that she was passively resisting her arrest and also still shouting on her way to being taken to the detention cell.

Ehrlich: Thus my analysis of late last night (early AM) stands. As bad as the entire arrest episode was it was nothing to the facts keeping her handcuffed when in a detention cell and then compounding it by shackling her to a table when the Phoenix police themselves said she was deemed a threat to herself or others. Moreover, if she had bruises all about her they are connected to what happened outside the pale of the video. Since I did not note that Gotbaum got a knee to her back re the original arrest then she must have gotten it in the holding cell. That is a dot that centrally then connects to my postulate of what took place.

The truly sad part to this story is that if she was family connected to the Gotbaums then this story would receive the same short shrift as all the other stories where people are victimized without recourse or relief (justice).

This is so much nonsense. This lady tried to commit suicide on 2 prior occasions. She suicided herself. That the Phoenix police were less than vigilent in looking out for what this unstable lady might do to herself is obvious. But the penalty that Phoenix taxpayers will pay for this oversight will not fit the policemen's "crime." If anything the Gotbaum family shares responsibility along with the police for being less than vigilent about Carol's welfare. Why did the Gotbaums allow an emotionally fragile woman to travel alone across country to a rehab clinic?

Carol Gotbaum was a wealthy Manhattan socialite whose family is well connected and whose mother-in-law is an attorney so this lawsuit will banqrupt Phoenix even worse than what the freebie entitlements to illegals were doing. Case closed.

I agree with you on that one. But no one seems to be able to understand how she could have committed suicide while handcuffed.

However, at 110 lbs, she received a heavy knee in the middle of her back after being wrestled to the ground by three men. What they did to shut her up later, remains a mystery.

Here's your answer - I'm sorry for her unfortunate death - some of you want to give a death by police state dimension to a sad event involving a troubled drunk whose wealthy family could give a sh*t about her - let her travel alone cross country - and is currently trying to make more $ off this poor lady's demise - but I don't see "Carol" as my posterchild for Police State Victim.

The airline agent called Phoenix police, who soon grappled with and cuffed the distraught 45-year-old, then shackled her to a bench in an airport holding area Friday.

Less than an hour later, Carol Anne Gotbaum was dead, apparently strangled by the 16-inch chain used to hook her handcuffs to the bench.

Cops say she appeared to have gotten tangled up trying to shift the cuffs from back to front.

She hung herself. She was an accident waiting to happen.

She was discarded by her family members - they did not even bother to pay for a nurse's aide to accompany her on the flight despite the fact that this Manhattanite family had $ coming out of their ears - Carol was abandoned by her friends - her friend did not even bother to meet her at the airport as planned. This woman's life meant nothing to her family until after she died and she presented them with an opportunity to make even more $ than they already have.

As for the Phoenix police - they were remiss for letting a raving hysteric to remain handcuffed in a room by herself - they should have had someone stay with her in the room.

But regardless - even before 9/11 - this woman would have been detained by authorities - the other passengers would have been alarmed by her behavior and do you blame them? - she was out of control - she did not take her meds like a grown up person should - that she died by hanging either by her own design or by accident is most unfortunate but no she is not my posterchild for Police State. She was thrown away by her family and friends - it was only a matter of time that Carol died.

An accident occured either by her hand or by circumstance. It is sad. What's sadder is that her family who had no time to accompany her to the drug rehab center is trying to make $ off her corpse. Her mother-in-law is an attorney - she knows the ropes. Let this woman pass without making her into a symbol for your cause - she is not - she was a throw away wife and daughter-in-law and an abandoned friend but hopefully a mother who tried hard to be better than she was. That's the sum total of what she represents.

I don't see this woman's demise as anything but a tragic loss to her children and her parents. I have no sympathy for her husband who let her fly alone or her friends one of whom stood her up and the others who did not make the time to acompany her. Regarding her loiyah mother-in-law - what can I say - opportunistic, perhaps, certainly not loving or she would have been by her side on the plane ride.

I pick my battles against the Police State - this is not a cause celebre for me. This is just a sad case of a throw away screw up whose husband and inlaws are going to use to make a lot of $.

The City of Phoenix will pay through the nose for the police department's oversight. I'm not arguing with anyone about the policemen's error in judgement - clearly they should have had someone in the room with Carol, a disintegrating hysteric, while she was detained or they should have called for paramedics and had her put in psych lockup for 48 hours under observation.

But as to her being a victim of Police State - no - I disagree. In fact, in a for real Police State - not a dubja wannabe police state - Carol might still be alive - albeit permanently confined in a padlocked room in a mental home but she would be still alive.

I do not believe she suicided herself. She was a victim of excessive force, and since we know that police are usually more careful with people when they are no longer on video, we can infer that they probably treated her extra special nice after they got her in the holding cell.

In all probability, she was dealt with harshly in the holding room, where she died due to her injuries. Someone ruptured something in her, and they did it by excessive force.

If the best story the police could come up with as a cover up was that she choked herself to death, it means two things (1) they expect the autopsy to show she was choked to death, and (2) they know because they choked her. Someone choked her out to shut her up, and when they realized she was not just passed out, but dying, it was too late. Negligent homicide and obstruction of justice, at a minimum, for all the cops.

It's the classic propaganda technique.

The police put out their story, then they pound that story while keeping back the evidence that is certain to betray them. Like that ass Nifong did with the DNA evidence.

They either choked her out or put their weight on a knee in her back or chest, and ruptured something - the aorta, the heart, or the bronchia.

How can they do this and expect anyone to believe their story? It's so absurd. The jack-boots didn't like the skinny little rich bitch with the loud mouth so they shut her up good. And they are used to getting away with criminal acts by covering them up, so they are just doing what they usually do. What they are not prepared for is the kind of scrutiny they will get in this particular instance.
