Fla. prosecutor charged in sex sting kills self in cell near Detroit

DETROIT — A federal prosecutor from Florida accused of flying to Detroit last month to molest a 5-year-old girl committed suicide in his cell Friday in federal prison, authorities said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John D.R. Atchison was found unresponsive, taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, said Felicia Ponce, spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington. A previous suicide attempt was foiled in September, according to authorities.

Atchison was being held in a special housing unit in the prison in Milan, about 36 miles southwest of Detroit.

The administrative detention area houses all levels of prisoners, and Atchison had a cell to himself, Ponce said.

She declined to say how Atchison killed himself or whether he was on suicide watch, saying the death was being investigated.

Atchison, 53, was arrested last month at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after weeks of Internet conversations between the prosecutor and a detective posing as the mother of a 5-year-old girl, authorities have said.

He was carrying presents for the girl, including a doll and hoop earrings, and also had sexual materials, including petroleum jelly.

After his arrest Atchison was placed on suicide watch, but it was lifted at the request of the defense, after Atchison assured a U.S. magistrate he wouldn't harm himself.

Two days later, Atchison used a sheet in his Sanilac County jail cell to try to hang himself around 4 a.m. Another inmate yelled out to jailers, who kept Atchison from hurting himself, according to Sanilac County Sheriff Virgil Strickler. Atchison was later moved to the Milan prison.

Atchison, a married father of three, was an assistant U.S. attorney in northern Florida, based in Pensacola. Gulf Breeze, Fla., residents have described him as a respected figure who coached girls' softball and basketball in a park a few blocks from his home.

A statement released Friday by his attorney, James Thomas, said Atchison had "done a lot of good in his life."

"Unfortunately, he is going to be judged by his most recent charges and what we have read in the media, and not by the goodness, hard work or by the love of his family," the statement read.

The statement also said Thomas would file a request to have the case dismissed.

Authorities have said they found no cases of child molestation in Florida involving Atchison, who worked mostly on tax and financial crime cases.

The prosecutor had been charged with three felonies. The most serious charge was crossing state lines with intent to have sex with someone younger than 12. Conviction carries a minimum 30-year prison sentence and a maximum of life.

Tho I am not reall interested in the whole subject, the social judgements of human behavior vary considerably.

I am as upset by the notion of sex with children as anyone else is.

I cannot find it however it to be interesting than Xenophon, the Greek General, in his famous history of the events he lived himself "The Anabasis" got caught up in the Cilician culture (central Turkey) where he relates a very strange and quite promiscuis(sp) commumity homosexual custom concerning a heavily tatooted young boy who offered sex of some sort to be performed in the middle of the town square.

Don't really have a point here, maybe Darius' famous comment on the subject.

How many other girls did he (attempt to) rape/molest?

He probably molested a lot. He was bragging to the "mother" that he was very experienced. And, typically, he was heavily involved in youth activities. I imagine a lot will come out about him.

Could we not do this renaming of titles to editorialize? There are posting functions, such as "Poster's Comments" in the article posting form, for example.

I don't like him either, but as someone against the death penalty, I simply will boycott threads where they are not posted property. Quoted above is the real headline.

(Except to complain about this, or course.)

I change the headlines of virtually everything I post. The main reason is to give the reader an immediate idea of what the article contains. Admittedly, this one was a bit emotional, but it makes it clear that the person is the baby-raper we had discussed previously.

Just because some clown at the NYTimes or whatever writes a headline doesn't make it the best and most informative it can be. If it's a good headline, I leave it alone. But most of the time I personalize it to the interests of the people on this board.

For instance, if I had posted the ORU article, I would have put Richie Roberts' name in it, because many of the people here know of him and don't like him. Unless you live in Oklahoma, I doubt that ORU means much to you.

I speak only of how I generally feel when I see such strong editorialization of a thread's title. It is a tactic that does not help a forum like this work well. It reduces the quality of the overall product that is a virtual community like this one.

I see this happen on LP allot, and is just one component to why that place is such a mess.

It is sad when anyone -- even someone like this -- dies. It is tasteless to gloat, and this death won't help end this sort of abuse.

It will just make the perverts into it more ruthless to avoid detection and possibly the same fate.

In any event, I don't begrudge your mirth over my comment, but there are good reasons I feel like I do on points of order like this.

I believe in accuracy in how the news is presented, and I believe in due process working correctly.

Suicide is not due process, and it should not be celebrated in a thread title.

I also will add to a title to clarify a location as you do. But I believe that editorializing in the title is unnessesary with all the options there to express your view and the prevailing forum view on things.

You post great stuff, and I enjoy reading your posts, but the title of this thread makes it awkward to post in if one has to take a stand concerning the editorialization as well as what they wanted to say on the story or topic.

You have to understand I guess that this has always been a pet peeve of mine, and I really see no point to giving news organizations yet another excuse to take legal action to stop great places like this one from reposting for discussion purposes.

Titles are far less important then the copy in the piece itself, but they should remain free of editorial comments unless it is indeed an editorial.

Thanks for the post, I understand your view on this, and that is all I will say on this. ;-)

You've got a point, particularly the legalistic one. I'll try to keep editorializing out of it. That guy, with his petroleum jelly and stuff, freaks me out. I'm not gloating over his death, but I get so sick of these self-righteous, hypocritical right-wingers who use the cheapest, nastiest attacks on their opponents while in their private lives, they are far worse.

I do agree that editorializing the titles is not a good thing.. I often put the subtitle in brackets or some comment so that as you said people know what the article is about..

A previous suicide attempt was foiled in September, according to authorities.

Suicided?
