D-Backs sweep aside Cubs

Nick Piecoro

The Arizona Republic

Oct. 6, 2007 11:21 PM

CHICAGO - The final out was about to fall into the glove of Jeff Salazar in right field when closer Jose Valverde began thumping his chest, and soon the celebration had begun anew, the smell of champagne and beer and sweat hanging heavy in the air of the cramped visitor's clubhouse at Wrigley Field.

The Diamondbacks danced and shouted and sprayed each other again - this time, with goggles, this time enjoying their 5-1 win Saturday night over the Chicago Cubs that completed a three-game sweep of this National League Division Series.

The win earned the Diamondbacks entrance in the National League Championship Series, where they will meet the Colorado Rockies, , who completed a sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies in Denver on Saturday night.

The win also allowed the Diamondbacks to again partake in their new favorite pastime: basking in their ability to disprove others. They dispatched a Cubs team that, despite having five fewer regular-season wins and playing in a far weaker division, was viewed widely as the favorites.

"Everyone questioned us going into this postseason, and I don't really blame them," outfielder Eric Byrnes said. "But there are 25 guys in here who never questioned themselves. This is how we've been winning baseball games all year - different guys on different nights."

They do not have big-name stars, but they produce new stars for every game, and on this night there were many, from Chris Young to Byrnes to Stephen Drew, all of whom homered. But none bigger than starter Livan Hernandez, whose round, shaved head was doused in alcohol by his teammates time and again in the lively postgame clubhouse.

Twelve men reached base in Hernandez's six innings, but only one scored, as Hernandez worked out of numerous jams, each time quieting the anxious Wrigley crowd.

"Houdini," manager Bob Melvin said.

Melvin always has been patient with his veteran right-hander, and that patience was not tested more than in the fifth inning, when Hernandez, trying to protect a 3-1 lead, loaded the bases with three walks, bringing up Chicago's Mark DeRosa with one out.

When Hernandez fell behind 3-1, the crowd was deafeningly loud, but Hernandez used his sinker to get a double play to end the inning, swinging the momentum back to the Diamondbacks.

"You have to allow my man here to have a little wiggle room," Melvin said, patting Hernandez on the head as he slipped past into the rowdy clubhouse. "And we do."

Young got the Diamondbacks off and running with a solo home run on the first pitch of the game from Cubs lefty Rich Hill, and Justin Upton made it 2-0 with an RBI single later in the inning.

Hernandez then went to work on earning his magicians' certificate. The Cubs had two on in the second, two more in the third, two in fourth and then loaded the bases in the fifth. But in the end, they came away with just one run on a ground out, going 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

After Melvin turned it over to his trusted troika of relievers - Tony Peña, Brandon Lyon and Valverde - the party was on in the clubhouse.

Hernandez, double-fisting, poured beers over the head of Byrnes, who let out a primal scream. Reliever Juan Cruz broke out the goggles - fitting, because they were his idea. The players twisted the words from the Australian chant to serenade second baseman Augie Ojeda: Augie, Augie, Augie! Oi! Oi! Oi!

And Mark Reynolds stood along a side wall, enjoying a celebration that the rookie didn't expect.

"To be honest with you," he said, "I didn't even know we celebrated after the division series."

Oh, they celebrated. And they're hoping they can do it again in another 10 days.

The sports talk radio guy local here in Phoenix is saying that the chicago cubs spent 300 million upgrading their team in the off-season. the diamondbacks' total payroll is 52 million. the Cubs went from last place to first because of the upgrade. but still exited in the 1'st round of playoffs. The sports talk radio is saying that the reason is they spent that 300 million on Democrat players and not Republicans.

Diamondbacks vs. Rockies is not what the network execs had in mind.

I've already said too much.

...nor were those three 'three and out' series...looks like the Yankees will be breaking that trend.

I've been wondering if TBS, who has the division series, is going to take a bath on it.

HAHAHAHA. First of all, it's $300 million over a gazillion years. Second, if he knew anything at all about baseball, he'd know they're almost all Republicans. Except Carlos Delgado. What a moron.

Maybe he should read Moneyball to explain this all to him. But I doubt he can read. Once you hit the playoffs, all bets are off. Anyone can win a short series. And that's not how you build a team.

All one needs is some hot pitchers and a little hitting in a short series. The Cubs are looking to be sold because like you have pointed out, the salaries have been deferred, and will quickly rise. Their payroll will rise by around 40% in the next couple years.

The Cubs lost because they were not the best team, left dozens on base, couldn't hit, and their bullpen let them down.

I can't wait for them to be out of the playoffs, I'll be watching again tonight with much anticipation, but hoping both teams have to play at least 5 games, it's a win /win for the sox that way.

Go Sox! :)

The Arizona Diamondbacks will be playing Colorado Rockies in a 7-game series starting Thursday for the National League championship. winner goes to World Series.

D-Backs won the Western Division of NL and Colorado finished a half-game behind in that division. Colorado has won 17 of the last 18 games. The only team that beat them during that time was the Arizona Diamondbacks.

anything can happen. But Boston is still favored by the bookies in Vegas to win it all.

out of curiosity - why don't you support Boston?

I must admit that Colorado is an interesting team due to it being so hot the last month.

It's that whole arrogance thing Massachusetts people carry with them...that's why those of us in New Hampshire and Maine always refer to them as 'Massholes'. Any time a Boston sports team loses; it makes them miserable, and that puts a BIG smile on my face. Petty? Yeah. (I will admit to being a closet follower of the Texas Rangers...I grew up around Washington when the Senators played at RFK...Frank Howard; those guys. For some reason; I still check in on the Rangers now and then...now that's pathetic.)

thanks for explaining that to me. I must say that there are a lot of nice people from Boston & from NYC, but there are also a lot of people from those 2 plaes that are jerks and they seem to think that being from those 2 places gives them a license to be jerks.

Having lived in both places for several years each, you nailed it, pal. Being a Braves fan, neither city much liked me, but they're really awful. I used to go to Fenway when I was a kid and lived two blocks away. When the Yankees were in town, I had to duck the fist fights. I've never had a problem at Wrigley but I sure got problems at Shea and Yankee Stadium.

Heh heh heh.

Go Boston!

I hate Yankee Stadium. I have lost a hat as a thirteen year old boy, and scuffled with a few Yankee boosters there over the years.

I am a life long Yankee loather. I hope that team enjoys watching the Red Sox win the World Series this year.

if you're for the underdogs, then you'll be for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

www.azcentral.com/sports/...ticles/1010dbmain-ON.html

at the beginning of the season the Diamondbacks were not supposed to win the Western Division, but they did. Before the season Luis Gonzales the slugger who hit the game-winning walk-off home run at the World Series in 2001 for the Diamondbacks demanded to be traded so that he could be with a contender. He was traded to Los Angeles Dodgers who finished 4'th in the division. And even though Colorado finished 2'nd in the division - Colorado is favored now to beat the Diamondbacks in this series.

Colorado Rockies won game 2 last night, just like game 1 played in Phoenix.

www.azcentral.com/sports/...icles/1012dbgame1013.html

the frustrating thing from Arizona fans point of view is that our team is getting a lot of hits & leaving a lot of men on base without scoring. this happened in both games. the article says that in the 2 games together Arizona is 2 for 14 for scoring with men in scoring position.

next the series shifts to Colorado for 3 games starting Sunday. I think this has the potential to be a great series. 2 young teams both wanting to go to the series as underdogs & play the Red Sox.

here's an article that says the Arizona Diamondbacks think they could've just as easily won the first 2 games if a few breaks had gone their way & that they were not outplayed.

The Colorado Rockies beat Arizona diamondbacks last night 4-1. that makes the series 3-0 in Rockies' favor. I think Rockies will make a run for world series champions most likely. They've won 20 of last 21 games.

I'll root for the Rockies in the world series.

I will if Boston makes it...I'd love to see the Rockies take them out four straight. Let's not count our chickens, though...Yankees were up on Boston 3-0 a few years back, and we know how that turned out...

Arizona Diamondbacks lost to Colorado Rockies of course last night - making it a sweep for Colorado 4-0.

www.azcentral.com/sports/.../1015dbcontainer1016.html

from Arizona's point of view we remember that our team actually out-hit the Rockies, but just couldn't convert to runs. But Rockies won fair & square. they are on an incredible run. Will it carry to World Series? I hope so. But Cleveland's pretty impressive too with their incredible home win-streak.

Will it carry to World Series?

Arizona ran into a buzz saw...it happens. As for Colorado momentum..? Eight day layoff before the Series could be an issue. As long as the Sox don't make it to the Series; I'm good. (Cleveland 1-0 right now...they could use the 3 game to 1 lead, because they are looking at Beckett and Schilling the next two games, and I don't think they'll get lucky against Schilling again...)
