FEMA staff portrayed reporters at phony press conference

This gives a whole new meaning to the expression "Faux News."

The Bush administration has taken news manipulation to a new low. The Washington Post's Al Kamen reveals that the "reporters" who lobbed softball questions at FEMA Deputy Administrator Harvey Johnson on Thursday were, in fact, employees of FEMA.

The first questions were about the "commodities" being shipped to Southern California and how officials are dealing with people who refuse to evacuate. He responded eloquently.

He was apparently quite familiar with the reporters -- in one case, he appears to say "Mike" and points to a reporter -- and was asked an oddly in-house question about "what it means to have an emergency declaration as opposed to a major disaster declaration" signed by the president. He once again explained smoothly.

[...]

"Are you happy with FEMA's response so far?" a reporter asked. Another asked about "lessons learned from Katrina."

"I'm very happy with FEMA's response so far," Johnson said, hailing "a very smoothly, very efficiently performing team."

[...]

But something didn't seem right. The reporters were lobbing too many softballs. No one asked about trailers with formaldehyde for those made homeless by the fires. And the media seemed to be giving Johnson all day to wax on and on about FEMA's greatness.

Of course, that could be because the questions were asked by FEMA staffers playing reporters. We're told the questions were asked by Cindy Taylor, FEMA's deputy director of external affairs, and by "Mike" Widomski, the deputy director of public affairs. Director of External Affairs John "Pat" Philbin asked a question, and another came, we understand, from someone who sounds like press aide Ali Kirin.

One of the faux reporters, Mike Widomski, defended the propaganda pageant, insisting that the FEMA staffers were simply asking the same questions that real reporters had been asking all day.

The Fox "News" Channel model of news manipulation actually seems rather quaint compared to this. Stalin would be proud.

Makes this observer believe it is common practice. At any rate Press "Credentials" are a potent form of employment.

Did they really think they would not be caught?

Most of the time they are not. A couple weeks ago there was a story about how the Bush Administration has spent over a billion dollars for "media consultants" which do things like shoot their own "news" stories that give one sided spin on an administration line or policy and then send them to local stations in stupid Red State land which air them without disclosure that they are government produced propaganda reels. Then there are the checks to pundits and media people to push particular policies which you can be sure hasn't stopped just because Armstrong Williams got caught. Then there are the propaganda campaigns that fly under the radar- like small town papers being sent form letters written by DOD shills that are presented as if a local boy wrote it- telling how great things in Iraq are going.

That billion doesn't even begin to broach the amount of money the DOD now officially spends in propaganda directed against Americans.

Everything we hear about Iraq is one big propaganda lie- from "Al Qeada in Iraq" to "Zarqawi" to the "Secular violence" that the US isn't behind . . .

Of course- all of this is blatantly illegal. The US government had rules set up during the Cold War when propaganda departments were set up to combat Soviet Propaganda. No money was to be spent trying to influence American opinion. Those laws and rules have been completely ignored by this lawless administration and as usual- no one cares and no one is doing a damn thing about it. We are paying for our government to lie to us. Our tax money is being used to produce lies to support taking more of our money!

I guess everything the Bush regime has done since its inauguration is one big Black Op.

The House of Bush, more than any other DC political house or clan before it, has its members (those loyal to the Bush House - clients who owe their appointments and status in large part to the Bush family) deeply rooted and embedded in the Warfare state- intelligence agencies, MIC firms, the military, domestic police orgs, Merc firms . . .

The Bush clan was present at and instrumental in the forming of the Mega DC welfare/warfare state that began under FDR. The House of Bush was present at and helped create the de facto socialist industrial policy this country had for decades after World War Two- that of spending huge sums on a vast military complex- that has and continues to warp the economy of this country and that has created ans sustains the current oligarchy we have now.

The supremecy of the House of the Bush really began with Daddy Bush's appointment as CIA director in 1975. Since then- that political house has only tightened its grip on power.

And by the way- the Clintons are part of the House of Bush.

Ironic. Rummy thought that, by persuading Ford to make Bush I Director of the CIA, he was destroying the man's political career.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.
