Putin denounces ‘madman’ with knife approach to Iran Carter says attack on Iran will be 'horrible mistake'

LISBON, Portugal (Bloomberg) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced what he called the “madman waving a knife” approach to diplomatic negotiations aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear program.

“To run around like a madman waving a knife is not the best way forward,'' Putin said in response to a reporter's question at a Lisbon press conference Thursday, following talks with Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva. “Why drive the situation into a dead end?”

The U.S. claims that Iran's uranium enrichment program is aimed at developing a nuclear weapon. Iran denies that, saying it only wants to generate electrical power.

Iran is a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its nuclear activities are supervised by the International Atomic Energy Agency. It has also signed an agreement with the IAEA to clear up all remaining ambiguities about its nuclear activities in the past.

Putin was in Iran last week for talks with President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and leaders of all other countries with a Caspian Sea coastline. They agreed none of the Caspian states would allow their territory to be used to launch an attack on Iran. Putin told French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Moscow Oct. 9 there's no evidence Iran is developing a nuclear weapon.

“We are categorically against breaking all norms of international law,” Putin said.

Russia, which is building Iran's first nuclear power plant, has opposed a new push for a third round of UN sanctions against Iran.

Putin pointed to the long negotiations with North Korea that led to an agreement earlier this year for that communist nation to begin dismantling its nuclear facilities.

""Not long ago it didn't seem possible to resolve the situation with North Korea's nuclear program, but we have practically solved it relying on peaceful means,"" he said as carried by the Associated Press.

---------Carter says attack on Iran will be 'horrible mistake'

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has strongly criticized U.S. new attitude towards Tehran, calling any military attack against Iran a ""horrible mistake and a tragedy.""

Jimmy Carter underlined that ""What we should be doing is having full negotiations, consultations with Iranian leaders to make sure that they know we don't intend to attack them militarily.""

He added that ""I think it would be a mistake. It would precipitate another war for which we're not prepared, when we're already bogged down 100 percent, maximum capability in Iraq. Iran is a decidedly more formidable military challenge than Iraq ever was. And I don't think we are prepared to undertake that sort of challenge.""

""It's obvious to every reasonable person that the best approach to Iran is to use diplomacy. And my own preference is to have direct relationships with Iran and let them be reassured that they're not going to be attacked,"" Carter added.

The Bush administration has unilaterally introduced an unprecedented package of sanctions against Iran's military which provoked widespread criticism around the world
