I just had to visit FR to see how they were dealing with the latest news concerning Ron Paul, for old times sake.

I had not visited in a very long time.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1921682/posts

I knew the place had gone to ADL hell, but I was surprised to read the attacks on Kathleen Willey.

The best thing is for the MSM to ignore this. Giving public exposure to a cash-strapped whacko needing to promote book sales and letting her rant with crazy foam-at-the-mouth conspiracy theories would actually help hitlery.

This story reminds me of Rosie O'Donnell and the WTC-7 story. Make a wildly stupid statement and then watch while millions of idiots with absolutely no proof of anything agree with you.

It was my mistake to visit the site. An American that believes in liberty and the Constitution visiting FR is like a black man visiting a KKK rally.

Thanks for the laugh - it's really sad what's become of fr, but, I made some good internet friends there.

About 8-10 years ago, FR seemed to have a lot of libertarians, constitutionalists, etc, most of whom disliked Bush, the GOP, and AIPAC as much as anything else.

I'm guessing it was a combination of the 2000 election and 9/11 hysteria that turned it into a GOP and neocon site.

Who knows? Maybe the Republican National Committee promised Robinson (who was in danger of losing his site due to a law suit) a big lump sum in exchange for turning it into the official George W. Bush fansite.

Does anyone remember when Freerepublic.com was a legitimate conservative website?

When I began posting there (96?) I was no longer a Republican or a conservative, but I do remember an open forum where people like us could work with the blue bloods toward common goals. Robinson, up to '99, was an anti- Bushie. It was shortly after the '00 election that he tumbled into the toilet with his fellow knob polishers in the GOP. All in all, it's best the virus of tFR is contained as it is.

It went straight to hell almost immediately after 9/11, and became a virtual circus of idiots and lunatics by around the end of 2003 I think.

I still post there occasionally. I think FR, and the R party in general, was better when it was the attacking minority. When the R's took power, the small govt ideals went by the wayside, and big $ politics took over. FR went from being a site that was dominated by libertarian leaning conservatives to highly partisan R's trying to rationalize the status quo. The primary emphasis there now is, first and foremost: pro-war, followed by social conservative issues. Fiscal conservatism takes a backseat, although there is still a minority contingent of fiscal conservatives. There are several pro-RP posters who are quite knowledgeable about RP. Every single RP thread has the same crowd of anti-RP posters who show up with the typical one-liners, cartoons, strawman arguments, and distortions of RP's positions. The thing I don't like about FR is the close-mindedness. If you are anti-war, you are anti-American. If you support RP, you are a loon. There is a tendency (which seems to be tacitly supported by the mods) to simply dismiss opposing points of view instead of having even the semblance of a meaningful debate.

and I agree completely. The change in JR was like 'instant'.....someone got to him for some reason.......whether it was Sheila's sickness, or his, or something no one knew about. Based on seeing what BobJ was doing/trying to do what with the inroads into cpac, etc., and I believe the secret desire to run FR, there was an offer that couldn't be refused. And there was a selling of the soul.

You don't write as JR did regarding bush and all the evil crap with which that family is involved with, or with the clarity he did regarding constitutional and governmental matters, and overnight the spots change.....not without something major happening.........and believe me, the liar in chief did not, contrary to a bunch of wet pantied wimmen over at FR's thoughts, walk on water--not at any time.

I believe the suit was settled before JR made the about face. It was in 2000 when he did that. There was a huge thread going and someone sent me an email that JR had written he was backing the liar in chief.

That blew my mind because I had spent many evenings in talk chat with JR before that and figured he'd be the last one on planet earth to change to cross over. It was in the talk chat he first told me about his being a registered democrat.

His family background and mind was quite similar--I was doing some genealogical studies at the time.

Anyways, I raced over to that thread and asked him myself if what I had heard was true.....and he told me yes.

And from there, it went downhill rapidly. The site is a total waste at this point. They are like a cult following their leader.

Jim used to write some really excellent lengthy comments on various issues.......things like restoring the senators to selection by their state legislators rather than popularity contests known as elections.

It was his writings, OWK, and Jeff Head, and joanie that attracted me to FR. I lurked til I searched around the site enough to know it wasn't full of looney tunes or commies or socialists.

It went to hell the day JR announced, in a complete about face, that he was supporting the liar in chief. Immediately, the witches and hounds were loosened from their shackles, and the witch hunts began, and the purges became routine.

And, IIRC, that was around the time of the gop convention in 2000...July or August, it seems.....though it could have been around May when he made that pronouncement of support for the liar.

Thereafter, Buchananites were unwelcome, Keyes supporters likewise, as were both Howards, libertarians, etc.

It was a signal for groupthink.

He went to Liberty FOrum, and from there, I am not sure. I so enjoyed the exchanges between those three guys.......and demidog, and there was a Paul somebody......even Don Morgan was articulate and sharp. Besides joanie, there was askel5, among other women. There was none of the 'ditto' mentality amongst the batches like these people. And they could defend their position without 'shit this, damn it all, or flock you'.

And alamo girl, with her gift for talking all the research materials, lists, etc., and making good order out of it all.

When moderators were made a part of the landscape, there was real deterioriation. One day you could have your own opinion and express it, and the next day it was 'bye'. I left on my own steam, though it was a couple of years before I realized I should tell Jim to get my name off the records because I didn't want to be counted as a part of their 'masses'.

Lodwick noted earlier it was a place for meeting like-minded souls....and that held true for a while........but now--sheet! I wouldn't trust anyone over there to cover my back for nothing. Using judgment to remain there as an active, involved poster, tells me that person's judgment isn't exactly what I feel comfortable with.

I trust you're not offended by honest feelings, and that you don't particularly take this as applying to you inasmuch as this is the first time I've seen your moniker.

I agree.

The thread I linked to in reply #8 that was posted by Jim Robinson was on FR for over 2 years before it was deleted. Posts concerning big government wrongdoing were the basis for the early FR. Later big government became infallible and beyond question.

Yep.

I can remember one time, it was nearly 4 am my time, sitting up and chatting with JR. It was a good feeling to be with a group of individuals that were not in lock step on every thing, but the major important principles were firmly in place.

I was so sure that the person who told me JR had switched to the liar in chief had mis-read what he said on the thread, that I had to ask JR for myself.

And he seems not to have an apology or regret. Of course, if you were being funded to easy street, I guess you'd think you didn't have to have any redeeming qualities.

As for the sad cauldron of posters over there--I recognize virtually no name.....and have to chuckle to find that banshees like howlin and her group of witch-bitches are gone. I would think a turnover in posters would be necessary, unless they are the brain-numbed types, in order to keep the extra change coming and the cover for being a legit grassroots site.

Not offended at all. I rarely post on FR (or here for that matter). I followed the Market Wrapup thread from FR to LF to here. I don't have much in common with most on FR seeing as I'm much more libertarian than partisan Republican. I don't get emotionally involved with any particular forum, so I don't feel compelled to terminate my account. Back in 98-99, I used to read every post on FR, but now months may pass before I even check in. I just don't find it as useful. The signal to noise ratio has fallen significantly. It seems like 99% of the comments on a thread add nothing to the thread.
