A man in Sweden didn't like the way his son-in-law was acting, so he sent a note to the FBI accusing the guy of being an Al Qaeda operative just before he took a trip to the USA. When he landed, the DHS held him in a cell for 11 hours, then deported him. Can't be too safe, dontcha know.

The wife didn't want him to travel since she was sick and wanted him to help care for their children, regional daily Sydsvenska Dagbladet said without disclosing the couple's names.

When the husband refused to stay home, his father-in-law wrote an email to the FBI saying the son-in-law had links to al-Qaeda in Sweden and that he was travelling to the US to meet his contacts.

He provided information on the flight number and date of arrival in the US.

The son-in-law was arrested upon landing in Florida. He was placed in handcuffs, interrogated and placed in a cell for 11 hours before being put on a flight back to Europe, the paper said.

Zip...

I think DHS has a list of nearly a million names of possible terrorists in the US.

this is pretty much my understanding of what happened in afghanistan in order to populate guantanemo bay. the only difference is people were doing it for money, but I've heard anyone could pretty much point out anyone, they'd be grabbed and the rest is history. I've often wondered how many people were upset with a son-in-law or neighbor and figured they'd be inconvenienced for a day or two.

Quite common in Soviet bloc countries. Spats with neighbors, grudges, ex- spouses, in-laws, competitive co-workers- denouncing each other to the secret police as "subversives". People who are just minor annoyances in most normal socieites- the petty, the vindictive, the busybody, the neighborhood gossip, the village bully, the poison pen writer- are empowered and encouraged and become deadly threats in police states.

In Russia- it was said that under Stalin- the problem wasn't simply one Stalin- but the hundreds of thousands of little Stalins his sytem brought out of the woodwork.

The "Freepers" are one vast pool of potential police state snitches and rats and neighborhood spies in my view. If anyone in the future tells you they post on FR- get the eff away from them.
