This year has proved to be the deadliest year for US troops in Iraq so far, with the death toll now the highest since the March 2003 invasion.

At least 852 American military personnel have died this year, according to figures compiled by Associated Press. Five US soldiers died on Monday in two separate roadside bomb attacks.

The high death toll this year comes despite a sharp drop in American casualties in recent months, as the so-called 'troop surge' takes effect.

There were 39 American deaths in October compared to 65 in September.

US commanders say the tactic of putting more troops into danger zones to hunt down insurgents is contributing the higher annual death toll.

36 deaths last month. But the weird thing is how the rate of KIA changed to almost the day of the beginning of October and then goes back to its normal above 2 KIA a day in the first week of November- almost as US forces had just lowered exposure of their troops to attacks- fewer patrols- so they could get a "casualties going down" headline.

They have actually done this routine before. When they used to publish lists of "major combat operations" before stopping this practice sometime in 2005- one could chart the claims of "lower casualties" and "lowerered trends" to months in which few to any combat operations had been ordered.

This whole war is one politicized piece of crap. I'm sorry to say this- but this is- without a doubt- the most pointless war that an American has ever died in. There is absolutley nothing being fought for except lies and the wallets of DC insiders and parasites.

I can understand the first wave of guys who joined up after 9/11 dying in Iraq- but now? ANyone who has joined up or re-upped in the last 3 or more years is, frankly- an effing chump.
