Sen. Hagel says U.S. draft may be unavoidable BY LESLIE REED WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

LINCOLN — Sen. Chuck Hagel, speaking to an audience of Lincoln High School students, warned Tuesday that the nation may need to turn to compulsory military service "or some kind of draft" to support the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) Questioned after his speech, Hagel, R-Neb., said he is not calling for reinstatement of the military draft.

But he said the growing difficulty of maintaining an adequate volunteer military force is "a reality."

"I'm just stating the obvious. At some point we're going to have to make a decision on how to attract a quality force," he said.

Hagel, a Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, spoke to more than 120 government and history students as part of a project to have veterans speak to students about their experiences.

The U.S. military draft ended in 1973, part of the bitter reaction to the Vietnam War.

Hagel told the Lincoln students that the burdens of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are being carried by too small a share of the nation's population.

"We have more than 300 million people in this country, but less than 1 percent of our population has to bear all of the burden, to make all of the sacrifices, to do all the fighting and all the dying for the rest of us," he said.

"There are people serving in Iraq for the third time, in Afghanistan for the third time. They're ruining their families, suffering post-traumatic stress disorder and significant injuries. They're not going to bear that burden any longer," he said.

Hagel, who has been a prominent critic of President Bush's Iraq policies, said the nation must make a "difficult assessment" on whether to return to some kind of draft or other form of compulsory national service.

Students listened quietly and said little during Hagel's speech. At the end, Hagel took a handful of pre-selected questions that students had composed on Monday with the aid of their teachers.

Social studies teacher Bill Zuspan said he and his students have discussed the possibility of a draft in the past, and he knows how they will react to Hagel's comments.

"They don't like the idea," he said.

Hagel said he is "well aware" of the sacrifices Lincoln High School has made in the Iraq war. Two graduates, Army 1st Lt. Garrison Avery, 23, and Marine Lance Cpl. Mike Scholl, 21, have died in Iraq.

He urged students to seek solutions besides war to the world's problems.

"Terrorism, extremism, biological weapons, chemical weapons, nuclear weapons — those are a threat to all mankind, not just Christians and not just Americans," he said.

"War is nothing noble or good; it's all about brutality and suffering, and that should frighten you and intimidate you into doing what's right, to prevent going to war."

Ha ha! Try it. As long as Billy Bob Hickboy is dying, the public doesn't really care. Try and draft Skippy Whiteboy from the middle-class, and watch politicians lose their jobs -- the last thing in the world they want.

a. Hagel, who has been a prominent critic of President Bush's Iraq policies, said the nation must make a "difficult assessment" on whether to return to some kind of draft or other form of compulsory national service.

He urged students to seek solutions besides war to the world's problems.

b. "We have more than 300 million people in this country, but less than 1 percent of our population has to bear all of the burden, to make all of the sacrifices, to do all the fighting and all the dying for the rest of us," he said.

a. Hagel is such a 2-faced sold out a**, I can't stand his snactimonious position -"oh golly I criticized dubya for the Iraq occupation, so that makes me a saint, so listen up kiddies, and join the warpig machinery because it's noble and patriotic."

Buzz off, Hagel. Your "testing the winds for conscription in fly over America" is a rather transparent ploy.

After Hagel talks up the need for conscription, as an after-thought he adds that war is not a good solution. I wish parents were allowed to be present when Hagel made his pitch to minors for conscription.

b. Maybe Hagel did not realize this but even though nearly 60% of American Jews favored an Iraq invasion in 2002, less than 2/10 of 1 per cent of American Jews serve in the military. Partcipation in the marines for American Jews is even worse.

Fighting and dying for the rest of us indeed. Screw Hagel and his half-truths.

Source for stats is mondo weiss 10/28/07 comments:

Only some 3,000 out of 1.4 million active duty servicemen and women are Jewish, about two-tenths of one percent. When it comes to Marines, the numbers are even more startling. It’s one out of 1,000. One-tenth of one percent. That gives new meaning to the term "minority."

American Jews were generally behind the idea of the war at the beginning, at least according to the AJC's survey ( 59%):

Also, American Jews are not averse to fighting for the IDF

The first people to be drafted ought to be the children of congressmen and senators, along with the children of PNAC members.

I think that a draft, or better still mandatory military service, would be the best possible wake-up call for this country. It seems to be the case that countries with mandatory service almost never go to war (unless it's defensive), while our country with its volunteer army itches to enter every war on the planet. There's a good reason for that.

draft may be unavoidable

Luckily for Bush and Cheney, the Vietnam draft was avoidable.

How many officers does an army need?

“Before Isandwhlana we treated all your wounded men in our hospital. But when you attacked our camp your brethren, our black patients, rose and helped to kill those who had been attending on them. Can any of you advance any reason why I should not kill you?’ One of the younger men, with an intelligent face, asked, “May I speak?’ “Yes.’ “There is a very good reason why you should not kill us. We kill you because it is the custom of the black men. But it isn’t the white man’s custom."

Even without a volunteer military, our leaders purposely got our nation into every war they could. WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam - our politcal leadership used conscription. In fact one can say that with fedgov military servitude, the chickenhawks in DC are more likely to get into wars and stay longer. Heck it's not them or progeny who will be drafted to fight on the front lines - get serious - the political elites will always ensure an escape hole to protect their loved ones. Conscription allows DC to have wars fought on the cheap and that is particularly appealing to the sold out political punks who can have $ left over to continue entitlements stateside to buy votes and win re-election.

In the late 1930s, Americans did not want a draft nor a war, and FDR and his people keep promising we would have neither. My Father would listen to that on the battery radio and call FDR a "lying SOB".

Lindbergh and others tried to warn America but the media destroyed them and sure enough Japan invaded US territory and we invaded North Africa. A blind man could tell we had been swindled one more time.

The wars are based on lies from top to bottom. That no one cares that they are based on lies from top to bottom is because they effect no one. Enact a draft and people will care and these wars will end, in even less time than Vietnam.

Baring martial law and the willingness to shoot americans like Stalin did Russians in the hundred of thousands in secret police basements- there will be no draft. Period. A draft would mean social and cultural explosion.

And anyway- the job that DC needs done in the ME- killing lots of innocent people- is suited just fine for criminals and illegal aliens and rural trash. This isn't a war so much as slum clearence and you need thugs for that- not soldiers.

It wouldn't surprise me if when things get tighter in the Middle East, the current administration would offer a pardon to every violent felon in the US prison system in exchange for their "service." The other half can sign up for Blackwater.

The Bush administration can make this offer to felons:

1) Thieves and armed robbers can get a pardon in exchange for signing up for the military.

2) Murderers and rapists can get a pardon if they sign up for Blackwater.

3) Pederasts/Pedophiles can get a pardon if they volunteer for bathroom duty at the GOP national convention.

I thought maybe Chuck Hagel was a notch above this scum running the government of the rich, now I'm not so sure.

Would all you fucking parasites get the fuck out of the government now. Scum, scum, scum!!!!

Time is the problem, burke. How many fedgov military male slaves would die or get badly wounded or have their souls and minds warped until DC feels it is most inconvenient to have anti-draft protests televised around the world?

With regards to Vietnam, anti-war protests began in 1965 but the draft did not end until 1973. Even if a draft today would end in even less time than Vietnam, that's still too long a time.

I doubt a draft would last a year. Communism was a "threat" many Americans believed in. "Islam" isn't. No one but the rubes, sissies, and dopes think the "WOT" is necessary - the hard core BOT 25 percenters. And that 25 percent would shrink to 10 percent if a draft was enacted.

These wars continue and are possible only because Americans are required to contribute nothing - not even having their taxes raised. But give Americans a reason to sit down and read every news story on the war- listen closely to the moron lies out of DC politician mouths? These wars would be over in two seconds.

Don't you love it when some idiot in Washington tells us that the war in Iraq is being fought to "protect our freedoms?" As far as I can see, nobody in Iraq ever threatened my "freedoms" in any way. The Patriot Act has, but it wasn't an Iraqi or an Iranian that crammed that down America's throat.

Other Washington crooks tell us that the war in Iraq is the only way to "keep our oil supply secure." What they really mean by that is that people like Bush, Cheney, and their cronies "secure" exclusive rights to sell that oil to us at as high a price as they want.

A good way to estimate the number of rubes who believe in WOT is the approval rating of Bush. The fact that it's gone down from 50% to about 20% means that 60% of the marks have wised up, at least a little.
