Title: Retailer denies sign is a slur (Credito sin papeles de gringo)

A Casa Furniture and Bedding store in Alexandria has been advertising easy credit with a twist: “no gringo papers” necessary.

A sign outside the store at the intersection of North Beauregard and King streets reads, “Credito sin papeles de gringo.” In English, that could be translated to say “Credit without gringo papers.”

Blanca Granados, the store's assistant manager, translated the message to mean “just 'without white papers,' like Social Security or like that.”

Miss Granados said the store requires customers who purchase furniture on credit to fill out an application and provide personal documentation. The store will accept a passport as identification.

“I didn't put it up,” she said. “My boss put it up.”

The other side of the sign advertises low prices and states it is hiring salesmen.

A woman Miss Granados identified as a store manager declined to comment. Another manager did not return a phone call.

Michael Barrera, president of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said he was aware of the sign but said the way "gringo" was used is not necessarily an insult.

"I think it's more for marketing," he said. "Gringo is not always a pejorative term."

The sign has been up for years, he said, but might strike a nerve now as the debate over illegal immigration intensifies in the local political arena.

"Because of this immigration debate, everybody's become more sensitized to that," Mr. Barrera said. "There have been some Hispanic businesses who have felt the brunt of non-Hispanics. They've made this immigration debate more about Hispanics than immigration itself."

“Some people say, 'You know, I don't have a Social Security,' ” Miss Granados said. “They can show their passport if they don't have any other papers.”

The American Heritage Dictionary defines the word gringo as “a disparaging term for a foreigner in Latin America, especially an American or English person.”

But the word “gringo” in the store's sign is not intended to offend anyone, Miss Granados said.

Casa Furniture and Bedding operates 10 stores in the region. Miss Granados said she was not sure how long the sign has been displayed at the store in the 4600 block of King Street.

Bienvenidos a la America del futuro.

I am a native born Californian and I have seen the future. It sucks big time. In my old neighborhood there was a business with a bi-lingual sign in the window. It was in Korean and Chinese. I can read English fluently plus some French, Greek, Spanish and Japanese, but I will never know what they were selling. The picture looked like it might be some kind of exercise equipment.

For the past ten years or so only Asians have been hired to sell stamps in local post offices. I met a girl from the Punjab in India whose mother was told by Asian friends to go to work for the post office for two years and you will get an easy job indoors selling stamps. By implication, the whites and the blacks can carry all that mail around in the heat of summer and in the cold winter rains.

A Mexican construction worker told me that they had already discussed amongst themselves just taking all of the construction jobs away from whites, blacks and Asians. Wages have dropped like a rock. The janitor in my building at work is a Mexican girl and makes $11.00 an hour. In 1981 union janitors made $13.00 an hour (in 1981 dollars) plus benefits.

I was told ten years ago by several high school officials from Fresno that if a white girl dared to file a criminal charge of rape against a Mexican that they would flunk her right out of the school. The majority of these officials I was talking to at an education convention were white.

My New Years resolution is to leave America in 2008. Your resolution should be at least to send your money overseas to a safe haven before the gringo dollar dice adios. (Before the white man's dollar says goodbye.)

"I think it's more for marketing," he said. "Gringo is not always a pejorative term."

Now we are pejoratively referred to as gabachos.

The gabachos don't want to give drivers licenses to immigrants.

That gabacho was so uptight, he wouldn't let us get ahead in line.

The last illegal that called me a gabacho...I'll just say he didn't fare so well and leave it at that...
