it would be cool if newport beach issued a warrant for rummy's arrest, so he'd have to sneak out a back door like he did in france. it ought to happen everywhere he goes.

Imagine a gauntlet of vicious patriots at the event buggering the Rummy creep, then urinating on the Bennet slob, the boos of the crowd would turn to cheers.

Note how Cheney is only appearing by video link. He isn't daring to show his face.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

‘Our right to protest’ Donald Rumsfeld receives award from Claremont Institute while angry anti-war crowd gathers. By Michael Miller Reader Feedback - Currently No comments posted. Comments

NEWPORT BEACH — Protesters swarmed the intersection outside the Island Hotel Saturday night to protest an appearance by former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who came to the hotel to make a speech and accept an award from a conservative institute.

The protesters, many of whom identified themselves as members of anti-war groups, drew a steady series of honks from motorists and often shouted slogans at drivers who gave no response. Inside the hotel by Fashion Island, the Claremont Institute prepared to honor Rumsfeld with its annual Statesmanship Award and listen to speeches by the former defense secretary as well as Vice President Dick Cheney, who was scheduled to speak through a video link.

“We’re here to make a statement to Mr. Rumsfeld that not everyone bought his lies,” said Whittier resident Arturo Cambron, whose son is stationed in Baghdad.

Neither the picketers nor most media got into the ceremony, which Claremont Institute Vice President Brian Calle said had a small select audience, but the demonstrators put on such a show that at one point, a pair of Rumsfeld supporters ventured outside and engaged in a debate with the angry crowd. A man carrying a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag, who declined to give his name, had to be restrained by other protesters when he began to shout and curse at a Claremont official.

Hans Zeiger, a graduate student from Pepperdine University who accompanied the official outside, said afterward that he took the protest in stride.

“We’ve got members of our generation who are fighting to uphold the right of those people to protest on that corner,” he said. “However we may feel about the politics of that war, we should be supporting our troops.”

Chuck Horvath, the president of the local chapter of Veterans for Peace, said likewise that he respected Rumsfeld’s First Amendment rights, even though his respect ended there.

“I am supportive of his right to speak, just as I am supportive of our right to protest who I consider one of the biggest war criminals in the world,” he said.

The occasion at the Island Hotel was the institute’s 20th annual Sir Winston Churchill Dinner, in which the Statesmanship Award winner receives a bronze bust of the former British prime minister. Calle said his group had long admired Rumsfeld, a key player in the buildup to the Iraq War, and considered him a consummate patriot.

“Secretary Rumsfeld has always been courageous in making difficult decisions in difficult times, and that is why we chose to honor him tonight,” Calle said.

I did a search last night on the Claremont Institute.. very interesting:

Philosophy

The institute's guiding text is the Declaration of Independence, and especially its central proposition that "all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights."

Many of the Institute's scholars are students of the teachings of Leo Strauss including Jaffa, who studied with Strauss.

The institute has great admiration for the statesmanship of America's founding fathers as well as that of Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill.

Uncommon for a conservative organization, the Claremont Institute tends to reject the constitutional philosophy of strict constructionism and often publishes material that is critical or derisive of conservative strict constructionists such as Robert Bork, William Rehnquist, and Antonin Scalia. According to some Institute writers, their legal philosophy is closer to that of Clarence Thomas, although outside of the Institute Justice Thomas is widely considered to apply the same judicial philosophy as Scalia.

If i'm not mistaken, a guy from the claremont institute worked on the case of that church in long beach that was gonna be seized via eminent domain last year. Yep. here it is. he did a lot of great work on that case. I had assumed it was a libertarian group., from my only previous exposure to it. http://www.claremont.org/projects/pageid.1855/default.asp That is why, when i saw who was hosting the event , was surprised. i guess you cant assume anything anymore. Neocons like property rights,..(?) lol

That is surprising. It's a Baptist church, and probably supportive of the Iraq war, anything Israel and pray for Bush.

The Claremont Institute is not mentioned in this article about eminent domain and this church here: www.prisonplanet.com/arti...2006/170806Grassroots.htm

Claremont Institute is well known for being a vipers' nest of neocon-ology. I am not surprised that RumDum was "honored" there. His special assistent while at the DOD is a Claremont alumnus - Stephen Cambone.

The guy from the claremont institute is the one who represented the church. here was the list of their updates on the case: http://www.claremont.org/projects/pageid.1855/default.asp

Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence

The Claremont Institute formed the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, a public interest law firm, in 1999 in order to further its mission through strategic litigation. Since its founding, the Center has participated in more than three dozen cases before the Supreme Court of the United States, including such landmark cases as Boy Scouts v. Dale, Zelman v. Simmons-Harris (the Ohio school vouchers case), Elk Grove Unified School District v. Newdow (the Pledge of Allegiance case), Kelo v. New London, Connecticut (the property takings case), and Hamdi v. Rumsfeld (terrorism case), urging the Court to restore the constitutional principles adopted by our nation's Founders. The Center also litigates on behalf of clients in a wide range of constitutional issues, and sponsors a student "Liberty Clinic" at Chapman University School of Law. The Director of the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence is Dr. John C. Eastman, professor of constitutional law at the Chapman University School of Law. A former law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, he has a J.D. from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in government and political philosophy from the Claremont Graduate School. He was previously affiliated with the Claremont Institute as a research associate beginning in 1983 and a Publius fellow in 1984. Dr. Eastman works with a prestigious Board of Advisors, chaired by former Attorney General Edwin Meese III, to develop the Center's litigation strategy. http://www.claremont.org/projects/projectid.31/project_detail.asp

That's certainly understandable, especially since we have to convince republicans to vote for Paul. a vote for Paul is a long way to resolving the root problem.

Personally I think the two issues can go hand in hand., to a large degree.

I don't know: some are so involved with 'my country, right or wrong,' and others are out there with 'my party, right or wrong.'

Anyone still shackled in that paradigm must be handled with kid gloves, and spoon-fed the reality of the situation.
